Maize Restaurant of Newark
Serving lunch, and dinner, Maize has an elaborate tea menu and extensive wine list, and is open seven days a week. Maize, owned by Livingston, New Jersey resident Wilson De Sousa, has received a rating of "Very Good" from The New York Times and "Three Stars" from The Star-Ledger. Maize has been a filming location for the popular HBO series The Sopranos, and has been featured on NBC's Weekend Today in New York.
First time dining at Maize. Excellent food with a Portuguese slant. Good location across from the Military Park garage and walking distance to the NJ Performing Arts Center. Service was spotty, but I think this was because they were hosting a party of 50+ people in the restaurant. The wait staff was friendly. I would definitely return.
It was a show night so the only menu option was "pre-theater" which was a very limited menu NOT indicated on the website which had a fuller menu. We told our waiter and the m'aitre de that we had a show to get to. Accordingly we chose soup and 2 small dishes and dessert (because it came with the dinner). After the soup the service dead stopped - we had enough time to rush through part of the plates , had to leave dessert behind in order to get to the show.
Throughout the waiters served all the people around us - far more complicated dishes - and we sat.
Very disappointing and though the place was crowded it was hard to see how our modest dishes took so long to deliver while the waiters kept saying they were bringing it out and then didn't.
First and last time for this place.
An excellent venue inside the Robert Treat Hotel. The restaurant was not crowded when we visited with a group. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Louis was a fantastic waiter. Would recommend for lunch or dinner in Newark.
Waited an hour for our meal. Other than that everything was great
Sangria was delicious. Food was good! Recommend again!
Every single item was delicious. Went before a concert at pru ctr. Unassuming location in the RObert Treat hotel. Truly a great meal and the hotel shuttle brought us over to the concert. Highly recommend. Good cocktails too.
Food is always solid. Nice place for business lunch.
I choose this restaurant as it is close to NJPAC and we were seeing a show the Sat. of Mothers day weekend I booked it 3 weeks in advance for 515pm ( opentable map sent me to the middle of downtown Newark shopping area Brangston and Broad I let opentable know) We arrived waited about 10 mins then grab a waiter walking by he said "no we close for private party" just walked away , I went to the bar asked for the manger He said I couldn't have a reservation I showed him my email he stormed off to the computer then yelling at me "YOU had a 415pm reservation " I said no 515pm he looked Oh 515pm I asked will we get served ? no apologies small corner table ok fine had to flag down a waiter to get water , had to ask for menus, he brings then do you have a wine menu, I said to our party of 4 when the waiter comes lets order everything at once as we wasted 25mins jut to get seated and get water and we had a 8pm show across the street the apps were fine , entrees ok steak was Little heavy on salt but most places do. One of the entrees lamb that was ordered medium rare come out well done . sent it back, 25 mins later comes out after asking - RAW ! Manger was chatting at table next to us stops by all friendly starts talking to a female guest at the table we tell him whats been going on Again no apology "let me check " and walks away 10mins later finally medium rare but the polenta that came with it was brunt I will never go back happy freaking mothers day worst service by manager waiter tired but when food was wrong his answer I don't cook the food working hard for that tip mister! we were generous and left 15% should have left 0 Hey owner/manger when things get screwed up offer a free glass of wine or a salad
The service was horrible. We waited 10 minutes after being seated, to see a waiter. Never asked us what we wanted to drink. Had to ask for water. We ordered, got our food & never saw the waiter again. Had to ask someone else working there for our coffee & dessert. Had to get up & ask for the check. Didnt tip. Paid bill. Will never ever go back or recommend. Shame on Maize
When Maize first opened it was innovative and excellent. For pre-theater dinner (@NJPAC), the meal is banquet food and expensive.
I ordered the mushroom appetiz theer - the chef had a very heavy hand with the balsamic glaze making it more candied than roasted.
The chicken entree which was ok, but very institutional mashed potatoes and the vegetables (string beans and carrots) were water logged and not really edible. For dessert, I ordered the ginger creme brulee. There was no ginger to be found in the taste of this ginger dish. Again, the chef had a heavy hand hand disappointed with sugar, dusting it with powdered sugar after it was bruleed.
I was really looking forward to tasty food when I made the reservation.
Overall the food was just edible, the service was frenetic, and the decor was nice. The only value I found was a glass of wine was only $8.
We had been here once before and did enjoy our meal. Selection of entrees was good.
Began with soup which Almost landed in my friend’s lap, it was served so sloppily. My friend and I ordered the NY strip steak. It was very chewy not very good. We both left more than half of the steak on the plate. Dessert was ok, nothing special.
For the price of $70.00 each it was a disappointment. We will not be returning.
I was very disappointed. The crab cake was awful, soggy, with no crab evident. It tasted and appeared like a very fishy , soggy mess. Vegetables were undercooked and tasteless. Salmon was dry. Service was hurried for no reason. To top it off they responded to Open Table that I was a no show. I called to correct this but again got excuses. Finally after 5 minutes and my reservation number they said they would correct mistake. Save yourself the aggravation and don't go to the Maize.
I've dined at Maize several times over the years and have always enjoyed it. I've never had a bad meal or experience there. (I've made a habit of requesting "a little spicy" for certain dishes as I prefer a little 'heat' on some foods, and Maize has met the challenge every time.) I absolutely recommed it. It's also very convenient when attending events at NJPAC.
Absolutely horrible service. Waiter arrived 15 minutes after we were seated. We left after an hour when entre's still had not been served. Waiter was defensive rather than apologetic/helpful.
We were going to a concert at the NJ PAC. We had reservations for 6:15pm and arrived at 6:17. We waited for a host at the host desk behind a few other couples. After 10 minutes, a man arrived (not sure if he was the owner or manager), who rudely told the people before us they were very late for their 5:30 and 6:00 pm reservations and he gave their tables away. When I asked if I would be able to sit for my 6:15 reservation (although by now it was 6:30), he shouted at me that we were late for our reservations. I mentioned we were waiting there for our turn behind these others, he shouted at us that we had not been there for 10 minutes waiting and walked away from us. Eventually a waiter apologized to us and brought us to our table. The food was not very good, and although the waiter was very polite, the kitchen was very slow. I do not recommend this place at all. Terrible management.
Menu needs to change. It has been the same for a long time and there are no specials. If it were a better kitchen I would be there every week.
Romantic restaurant conveniently located.
Awful experience. Horrible food worthy of a lousy diner. Poor service. But at least it was overpriced.
We arrive to find that it was a set menu because of a show in town. The cost was $45 per person. The waiter got our drinks order then took our food order which he did not give us much time to review the menu. We could tell right away that he wanted to turn the table quickly. Didn't see him after that till he came for the check. The food was just horrible, my husband order the crab cake to start and felt after the first bite that it was off. His steak was chewy and not cooked as ordered. Our friend ordered the tuna entree and say it was cold and fishy tasting. I had the chicken with veg with some kind of brown gravy. It was tasteless, I've had better food from a pizza place. I would not go back to Maize again. Total waste of money.
We decided to try this restaurant prior to the Elton John concert at Prudential Center. We liked the menu on the website, but when we go to the restaurant, there was a pre-Theater fixed menu. My wife ordered the Seared Tuna (Rare) and I ordered the stuffed Salmon. Both meals were prepared poorly. The Tuna was cooked too slowly so it was dry and had little flavor. The Salmon was overcooked and didn’t taste fresh. As the “Theater Crowd” rolled in, it got loud and service went from good to terrible. We waited for 30 minutes after dessert to get our check as we were quickly forgotten. Overall this was a disappointing dinner outing and we will not ever return.
Sorry was very disappointed as there was a price fix menue due to an event. This was not mentioned. We were looking for a Fun Portuguese Restaurant not a price fixed menu with no Portuguese. The ambience was nice
Will not be going back
Great place to grab a very nice bite before a show at NJPAC or Prudential Center. Off the lobby of the Robert Treat hotel. Food was good and ample. Good service too. We had the paella twice ─once at the restaurant and once at home─ and enjoyed it both times. Can recommend without reservation.
Nice food , friendly service . A gem next to the New Jersey Pac
The food was delicious. It was rather early and they weren’t busy. So we had great service too
The food was delicious. The wait staff could have been a bit more attentive but it wasn't bad service at all. Just not as attentive as some other places. I will go back the next time I go to a show at NJ PAC.
I would say, though, that if you are going to dinner before a show at NJ PAC, make the reservation for 6:15 or 6:30 for an 8 PM show. The food was freshly prepared.
They had good food, nice atmosphere, but service was a little off. We waited 15 minutes for the waiter to come back with check. Overall this is a good place to eat
Dinner before PAC. Three course prefix menu was only option, however all meals were very tasty, includung duck, lamb and steak. Nice selection of both appetizers and dessert. Service was very pleasant, but a bit slow due to a full house, so be sure to plan enough time to be relaxed.
Pre NJPAC price fixe. Cold/institutional food. Expensive for what we were served!
I almost always come here pre or post concert. It can't be beat for convenience and I find the food consistently good and the atmosphere quiet enough for thoughtful conversation. Service is pleasant and efficient as long as they are not also serving a large party of some kind.
Nice service, very limited Portuguese food on menu.
We were there for pre theater dinner. The service was good except needed to ask for water refill.
There was a big event in a large section of the restaurant with loud music, many people and commotion.
Swordfish was tasty
We made reservations in advance and arrived hungry after a show at NJPAC next door. We arrived at 8:45 p.m. They had a pre-theater menu and we ordered fast.
By 9:50 all we had eaten was soup and bread, as our main courses failed to arrive. Other tables who arrived after us completed all 3 courses while we sat and waited. Only after pestering the waiters a few times did they finally bring out the main course, but it was too late for us to eat. We had to head home, so we asked for the check. They still charged us $25 for the soup and a glass of wine.
I understand that it was busy and the staff must have forgotten about our order. Mistakes happen. But it would have been nice if they acknowledged the mistake and didn’t charge us for the little food we were given during the hour that we sat there.
LESSON LEARNED. Should have listened to the other reviews but thought we’d be safe since our 9 pm reservation was AFTER the theater. Picked this place only for proximity to NJPAC given cold weather. Never again. Still forced to order from PRE-theater price fix. Food quality for both our meals was poor. Fish dish was cardboard with “steamed veggies” that tasted straight from the frozen vegetables warmed up in a microwave. Chicken dish was drowning in bad sauce. Both desserts tasted stale. By 9 pm, restaurant was not crowded but wait staff quickly disappeared (as did the hostess) our waiter could not be less interested in serving us. Table next to us left after being served their appetizers and then nothing else. Ironically, given how slow/poor service was, would never even consider going pre-theaters
We went before a show at NJPAC. We were surprised to learn they have a limited menu on that night. Tasted like a meal you would get at a wedding or other event where they just make a few meals in large quantities. Don’t even bother asking for the smallest thing off that limited menu.
It may be better when there is no show happening. When seeing a show, you can’t beat how convenient it is - just a couple hundred yards away.
Very disappointed. As we used the map on open table to find this restaurant. After walking 10 minutes in wrong direction we finally gave up as it was in a non desirable location. Address in maps was totally wrong. Later found restaurant and was turned away bc we were late. Very upset bc we were late bc of Open table. Host at restaurant was rude and wouldn’t seat us. Even at the bar. We walked across street to have drinks at NICO kitchen. Very nice. But we were starving. Wish NJPAC had a better selection of walking distance eatery’s.
The food was good as always. However, the service was very slow. We had a 5:30 seating and narrowly made it to a 7:00 show. We had no appetizers, just drinks and a main course. We saw one couple refuse their meals because it was served too late and another had it packed to go. Disappointing.
Very convenient for pre-theater at NJPAC... worth the visit, but don't wait too long to make reservation, it;s a popular place on concert nights.
We went here as it was close to the NJPAC. The food was decent. The service was embarrassingly bad but my sense is that it was made worse due to there simply not being enough servers.
Took forever to get a waiter. Really - a restaurant should want to get drinks on your table ASAP! Finally ordered the wine and food at the same time - over 20 minutes after being seated. And after flagging someone down to ask for bread.
As I said, the food was okay. But having to get up to go to the wine bucket to get the wine so we could have second helpings is ridiculous. A gentleman at the next table went roaming the restaurant at the end of the meal asking is SOMEONE, ANYONE could get them two cups of coffee!
So year, we will probably return but only for convenience. What a shame.
So so food trying to pose as elegant restaurant.
