MainSail at the Marriott Newport Rhode Island Ratings and Reviews
Well our server was very accommodating and the food was great. Too long in between each course though. The room was nice and the table was spacious but the chairs were horrible. We were a party of six and we all were very uncomfortable. The chairs made you slouch and we all had sore backs. We have eaten here before and since then the restaurant has been updated. The theme is great.., supposedly a ship with plank ceilings and sails are the back drop - very cleverly decorated and designed. All except the chairs!! The value was okay.. pricey but understandable considering the location. The food was very good and they brought a surprise dessert for the birthday boy. The staff disappeared when they could have sung it wasn’t busy at all. I would give it a 3 out of 5 overall due to the seating.
Good martini, delicious salad and dressing.
As for the main course: A good paillard is a thin pounded breast quickly grilled or griddled and uncoated. This was something else. This chicken was just a dry piece of coated breast with the bone attached. It probably was purposed for other dishes as well, served in the restaurant or hotel catered events. It was sitting atop the other overly sauced vegetables (which lost their identity in terms of appearance and flavor in the sauce). The chicken partly absorbed and was overpowered by sauce over and above the pesto dedicated for the breast as described in the menu. Probably the bowl it was served in was too small and crowded everything.
My wife and I stayed at the Newport Marriott over Columbus Day weekend to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary. We ate at the Main Sail restaurant at the Marriott on Saturday night. The restaurant has a nice view of the Newport Harbor. I would describe the atmosphere as 80's library motif and while we had a table with a nice view, the AC vent pushed cold air down the window during the entire meal making us strongly consider going up to the room to get our jackets. The best I can say is that the entire experience was fair as I've indicated in the star ratings. I had the seafood pappardelle and my wife had the cedar plank salmon. My dish was hot, but the noodles were over-cooked and a bit mushy. Overall the flavor was nice, but the texture of the over-cooked pasta threw me off and limited my enjoyment of the dish. I'm obsessive about hot food and mine was nice and hot. However, my wife has come to appreciate a hot meal having been married to me for 18 years, and her dish did not arrive at the table hot, but rather had a temperature as if her dish was plated first and then sat on the counter waiting for the kitchen staff to finish over-cooking my pasta. She was disappointed in the temperature of the dish, but did say the flavor was nice despite that miss. The above leads to my overall rating of fair.
We shared the anniversary of our friends and made that known when making the reservation yet no one asked us about what they could offer to make it special. Our server, Holly, was friendly and efficient. The food was prepared well, (we all had the filet mignon, and the roasted Brussel sprouts were amazing), and served in a timely manner. The wine list is good but extremely over priced. Despite the location which offers outstanding views of the harbor, the interior and lack of any ambiance whatsoever is what brings this restaurant down significantly. The interior is sterile, stark and lacking in warmth and color. The lighting was way too bright and there is no music of any kind. We are local and never hear anyone talking about this place. For a Marriott restaurant, to bring in the locals, it could benefit from becoming significantly more inviting.
We had such wonderful food but unfortunately the service was poor. I am hoping that is was just our particular server because otherwise it was a great option especially if staying at the hotel. Dishes were not cleared from appetizers, had to ask, we were not told about unavailable menu item that we had ordered until just before food was being served. Had to ask to have candle lit, had to ask for drinks. Service was very lacking and given how great the food was I really hope that our server was the exception and not the rule. Place is beautiful inside, lovely view.
We had never visited Newport before and wanted to grab brunch before taking the Ten Mile Drive. This restaurant was exactly what we needed. The food was acceptable, the service was great, and there was a beautiful view of boats in the harbor. The value/serving size ratio was good for the Western Omelette. I requested salsa, which strangely did not come with the Western Omelette, and the server was happy to bring it. The Eggs Benedict was good. Plate presentation on both meals left something to be desired. Atmosphere was relaxing.
Service was good, restaurant really nice. We were a party of four, three of us had issues. Scallops were very fishy tasting. Steak was ordered medium and served well done. They brought another steak out which was cooked slightly better, but the rest of the party had finished eating. The manager (Davon) did the right thing, he removed the scallops from our bill and took 20% of the bill.
We ate an early dinner here with relatives from out of town and my two young children. Our server (I think he said his name was Sam?) was AMAZING. He went above and beyond for us and was an impeccable server. Lovely redone interior design of the hotel & restaurant is modern, sleek and attractive. GORGEOUS view of the docks and a lovely lobby to walk through. Perfect choice for our needs!
We had a pre wedding day night out and made reserv here. The bar was fun and excelllent service. The dining room food was very good but the waitress seemed disinterested and we recd our app and salads and dinner at odd timing.
The place was pretty deserted and the huge table we sat at was difficult to have conversation for our group of 6.
Food was good... this restaurant has lots of potential but needs wait staff and hostess that have some energy and more attentive.
we went for a quick, light lunch and discovered that the mainsail restaurant was closed, however, the bartenders at the skiff lounge were offering dining there. worked out perfectly as we were able to sit outside at the bar/deck area of skiff ! it offers a stunning view of the harbor (probably one of the best views in town) and it was a gorgeous, sunny day! our waitress/bartender was extremely pleasant, accommodating and attentive. we had the blackened fish sandwich, n/e clam chowder & shrimp cocktail. the fish sandwich and clam chowder were both good!! the shrimp cocktail needed help! the shrimp looked like they were blanched, frozen and thawed :-( - limp & clear - not nearly cooked enough. they are served in a bowl of ice, which of course melts right away, thereby leaving them floating in water. honestly, not appealing visually or taste wise! minus the shrimp, all was good!! see you next visit! thanks!
Thank you for making our fourth wedding anniversary very special and our server on Thursday night was amazing ! He was very accommodating , very sweet and knowledgeable .
The food was outstanding, we are locals, we will be back again . Thank you for the wonderful accommodations, from that the service ,to the food and the hostess was extremely nice . We had a GREAT TIME!
We tried Main Sail because we found it on Open Table and felt like trying a new local place. The experience was very much an urban hotel experience one would have anywhere: unremarkable, overpriced and not worth repeating. That this is Newport with the excellent upscale and nuanced competition that exists made us feel a little foolish as locals!
A gracious but untrained waitstaff seemed overwhelmed by an average dinner crowd -- they were clearly understaffed for a Saturday night of a holiday weekend. We ordered three apps and a main course -- roasted brussel sprouts were delicious; chowder was good but served tepid in a cold dish; Caesar salad and Lobster on Pappardelle were blah. With no alcohol or dessert, the $90 bill (including a tip) seemed absurd.
Too many great -- even merely good -- restaurants in Newport to try this again!
We were in Newport for Thanksgiving and dined at Main Sail for Bkfst and Thanksgiving Dinner. Breakfast buffet was very nice tasty, freshly made omlettes and waffles. Bagels were great! Service was nice.
Thanksgiving Night we were aware that there was no real Thanksgiving Menu and that was fine for us. I ordered the short ribs which I thought were dry. They were soft and easy to cut as short ribs should be, but they were served without the normal sauce that you expect in a short rib entree. There were 3 pieces (medium size) and I didn't even eat the whole thing. I was hankering for ice cream for dessert and here they hit a home run! The portion was huge and the ice cream was creamy and delicious. Unfortunately, the service was fair, as I suspect the poor waiter, Sam, was just overworked on a holiday in this hotel restaurant.
The food was nothing short of perfection. Every bite a joy. Perfectly prepared and served. The service was very attentive, but not overly so. The restaurant has floor to ceiling windows the full length and over looks the harbor. A delightful experience start to finish.
