Permanently Closed - A Minneapolis tradition was born on October 2, 1947, when the Oak Grill opened for business. Architect Bob Hansen used characteristics from the Jacobean period in the design of the rooms. The ornate fireplace, originally from Salisbury, England, was over 300 years old when it was transported in sections and reassembled in the Oak Grill. With its solid oak columns and vast frame, it soon became the room's focal point. Its distinctive appearance, along with dark paneling, red chairs and dim lighting, help give the Oak Grill its cozy ambiance.

The Oak Grill was fabulous today, as it always is. Today, I took my nephew to lunch at this great downtown Minneapolis restaurant (his first time). We enjoyed everything about the event - the food, the service, the atmosphere ... and the history. Oak Grill, your servers and cooks are the very best - professional, polite, respectful, knowledgeable and, quite simply, really good people. So long, dear friend. Godspeed to all Oak Grill employees!

By the time anyone reads this The Oak Grill will be closed permanently. Along with the original Dayton's department store, it is the end of an era. This was a wonderful restaurant in a grand store, but no one shopped the store... so the store and restaurant are now gone. We can't change this reality, but if there is a favorite store or restaurant on your list you haven't been to lately, you should go. We can't lament when things go away if we personally did nothing to support them with our time and money.

As expected it was very busy and while we got water fairly soon, did have to wait about 15 min to have a waitress come to get our orders. A friend and I have gone to Dayton's/Fields/Macy's for years for the annual Christmas and Flower shows and lunch after in the Grill or Skyroom - always excellent food, popovers and have not been happy with Macy's since they had owernship but did like the Oak Grill. We will miss these two restaurants. Our food was very good -

Worked at Dayton's for twenty years. Ate at The Oak Grill on occasion through out that time. Their popovers are fantastic and a great start for lunch or dinner. The traditional swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and gravy were outstanding. The keiche was also fantastic. Very sorry the restaurant is closing.

We had a lovely time at the Oak Grill. We heard that they were closing on January 27, so we made it a priority to visit as an office. They weren't accepting reservations over 6, so we ended up splitting into two tables. It was a good thing we had a reservation as there was a 2 hour wait when we arrived. The food was delicious. The servers were very pleasant and considerate. Overall a lovely environment. Wish it wasn't going away.

None of the above questions really fit The Oak Grill since it closes on Friday. It would have been better to adjust your questions for that occasion. Since people are flocking to the restaurant to get one last Oak Grill meal before it closes, the service wasn't great. But then, the place was packed and there was a line of people waiting, with or without reservations. The most striking thing was the smaller servings. My friend ordered the Pot Pie. No skimping there. I ordered the meatloaf. Meat slices were smaller than usual and vegetables were miniscule compared to normal. We were told by a server that they were afraid of running out of food. Didn't anyone there see this rush coming? I've been going to the Oak Grill since the 60s and will miss it. But luckily, we still have the Lakeshore at S'Dale.

My Mom and I went to celebrate the end of an era of going to Daytons/Marshall Fields/Macys with friends and family over the years. The popovers were hot and crispy and the chicken salad sandwich was the best I'd ever tasted. The service was a bit slow, understandably, as so many people were wanting to come for a last visit. We're so glad we made it.

What a blissful experience! It began with PaulDavid as host, warm friendly greeting, quite welcoming. My group reduced from 8 to 3, PaulDavid quickly made modifications and we got right to our table. Deeply sad that this was my last chance to dine at the beloved Oak Grill, however, I very much appreciate all the years of joy I experienced at the Oak Grill. Farewell dear friend! You will be missed and never duplicated.

Super busy during our visit! Popovers (always a favorite) were baked too long. Chicken pot pie was tasty but much more gravy than chicken and veggies. Crust was flaky and tasty. We were delighted we snagged a reservation! So sad Oak Grill along with Macy's is closing. Both store and department showing signs of aging and neglect! Several areas needed a good cleaning...especially carpets!

Too bad this restaurant is closing. I hope, as Rick Nelson suggests, they are able to reincarnate it in another location. Not many restaurants like this are left in the Twin Cities. I'm 70. I like the ambiance of a nice restaurant. Forget the "run in and run out".

"for old times sake. . ." I think that may have been the title of a song of bygone years. For us, it was perhaps the culmination of quite a few years of awareness and patronage. Someone once said, "nothing lasts forever," and in my view, this may be true. I'm not locked into the past but for me (and us), and perhaps others, yesterday's occasion may have been a time to remember. I have no idea what the future may hold for the Oak Grill, but the bar is pretty high for its successor.
