Lockbox at 21c Hotel Ratings and Reviews
We were very disappointed. The atmosphere is austere. The service was Ok, but not friendly. Food portions were small.Prices are high.
The art on display is uninteresting.
21C in Louisville is much better. So is Giuseppe's in Lexington, and a superior value.
WE won't return.
The country ham and cheddar hush puppies were hot, flavorful and a nice treat to start. The Red Wine Mufala was really delicious with lots of nice flavors throughout the dish. The red Zinfandel was an excellent accompaniment. Our waitress was delightful and engaging without being overbearing or interrupting often. We will return.
Reservations were for two at 6:30 on a Tue night. When we arrived the restaurant was totally empty, totally. The young man acting as host showed us to the very first table right next to the door and right next to the podium. When we asked for a different table, he said that all of the other tables were reserved. I pointed out that I also had reservations and that my money spent as well as any other patron’s. I asked for a two-seater at the end of the banquette, but was refused. He eventually acquiesced to seating us midway down the banquette and clearly acted as if he was doing me a huge favor. Not the best way to begin my evening.
I might note that the server, Zephyr, was excellent, as was the food. But beginning the evening on such a sour note almost ruined the entire experience.
I wish I had thought to speak to the manager as that young man obviously needed additional training.
Btw, no other patrons occupied any of the banquette seating, to include the requested table, during the course of our meal.
Lockbox will not be among my first choices for future dining.
My daughter and I had Thanksgiving dinner here. There was more food than we could eat and for the most part it was good. The white meat of the turkey was more like turkey loaf, though. Service needs some improvement. We had to flag down our server twice for water. When she brought the bill, she just tossed a piece of paper on the table wordlessly. No folder for the credit card, no pen. Also, no one asked us if we needed anything else. Just left without a thank you.
I went to celebrate my birthday. Boy did I get a birthday surprise. Food that was supposed to be hot was cold, service was extremely slow, and the food was ridiculously priced for what I received.
It took my entire birthday evening to get my food and get out of this restaurant (almost 3 hours) and there were only 6 tables being served on a Friday night.
I have been going to this restaurant since they opened and I have only seen it go downhill in both food quality and service. What a shame.
Such a great neighborhood gem! Had an incredible Shrimp and Grits as well as some delicious cocktails. Would highly recommend this restaurant to people just visiting Lexington or people who know the city well. Such a great addition to the Lexington food scene. Will absolutely be visiting again in the future.
Enjoyed the new winter chicken entree for dinner. The interpretation of the Caesar salad was amazing, with broccoli replacing the romaine lettuce and an anchovie dressing instead of traditional dressing - awesome! First time dining here, and highly recommend.
My wife and I treated my elderly mom and her friend to Saturday dinner at Lockbox. We are already big fans of Proof on Main and Grey and Dudley, 21c's restaurants in Louisville and Nashville. Lockbox checked all our boxes on menu, creativity, preparation, service, and ambiance! Our server, Brian, was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu items. We live in the Nashville area and can't wait to return to Lexington for another dining occasion at Lockbox.
The ambiance was the best thing. Most unfavorable was the fact that I ordered a drink and the waiter forgot to tell me it was not the drink that I ordered when brought to our table and I had to consult with the waiter and then he admitted to the omission, in that they did not carry the bourbon (Crown) that I requested until after I'd taken a drink. Why didn't he tell me that up front?
The cuisine was average, in that, we ordered the most expensive entree on the menu, which was the ribeye for two @ $95 and it was cold and all in all average. But for a very special first date between two people that had not laid eyes on each other in 15 years..we def are seeing each other again but probably won't return to the Lockbox.
Really cool space, great food! Interesting wine list. Service was on point to start, then tapered off a bit towards the end of the night - but not a huge deal. The space is really cool with interesting art installations. The vault which has been turned into a private dining space is also pretty cool but for one major criticism: the chairs through the whole restaurant, including the private dining room are awful. The most design-absent, cheap looking, wedding hall reminiscent stackable chairs. Total design miss. Hope the budget opens up for new chairs. At a minimum, put some kick a$$ high style chairs in the vault. The whole space is lacking without it.
I had been excited about getting to try this restaurant which I had heard a lot about. But I was not impressed from start to finish. Our waitress was dressed in a tank top and pants with a ring in her nose. I know it was lunch but it is a white table restaurant and that was a little too casual for me. I brought the CVP and CFO of a fortune five hundred company for lunch and felt like we were eating fast food. I thought the menu was very limited and although not excessively
expensive it was certainly too much for what we received especially given the very casual staff. We ordered two totally different salads and with the exception of the chicken being fried on one it could have been the same salad, it was not bad but neither was it great. Not only was I disappointed but I have already told several people I would not recommend the Lockbox based on our experience. In addition there is no parking downtown and the valet cost 8 dollars for lunch. Once again had it been the experience I had hoped for it would have been worth the cost but sadly it was not so the cost was not justified.
This is my 2nd time going. The atmosphere and ambiance at Lockbox is terrific. Very nice, clean, etc. My wife ordered Fresh Garden Salad and Red Snapper. I ordered the steak (Medium) and the creamed corn.
The salad was awesome! If you like the ingredients that the salad contains, you're really going to enjoy the seasoning and flavor.
The Red Snapper and the veggies around it were great too. The snapper was very tender.
The veggies with my steak was terrific. Potatoes, the salsa seasoning, and eggplant were great.
Creamed corn. Another hit.
Server. She was terrible. Didn't tell us about any specials. Waited forever for drink refills. Didn't pre-bus and get the crumbs off the table (like the others). Just minor, but if the other servers were doing it, then she wasn't doing her job. She was rarely around.
Steak. Cooked to Medium-well (almost well done) and hard to chew. I am fairly disappointed since that was the main staple of the meal. I do not complain to the staff around that because I do not want them to waste the food and throw it away. I do not like making a scene either and try to get "free" stuff because I don't want to seem like a free-loader, but I will write an honest review.
Overall: more like 3.5 stars, this time. I will go again and see what the 3rd time is like.
Great lunch. The Gravlax on Toast was light and perfect. The Not Your Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich is much more substantial and almost too much for a single meal but great for left- overs the next day.
We were old friends getting together to catch up. The seating and quiet setting were perfect for conversation.
My friend and I just came for drinks and dessert prior to an event downtown. We sat in a corner by the window; lovely location. The restaurant was not too loud (or filled, even though I had one of the last reservations). Service was excellent - very friendly and attentive. My smores and coffee were excellent. We toured the art exhibits prior to our seating - it is such a wonderful way to start an evening!
Excellent food, the Snapper was greatly enjoyed by my fiancee, and I loved the spaghetti. Our server was helpful and courteous, and kept our waters topped off and checked on us regularly. My only criticism is that 2 person seating is a little close together. We were literally sitting about a foot away from another couple and we could hear each others conversations perfectly and kept talking over each other. I would definitely recommend it though, but next time I might try to request a table.
Lockbox went above and way beyond to make sure my partners 39th birthday was special. Left a very high bar for future local restaurants to try and meet. I am still thinking of what I had to eat even days later as it was amazing. Even to the point for having a smoke pot come out with the S'More dessert that made it even taste more amazing.
Reliably VERY good. But not quite the best of the best - so 4 stars. Baked oysters and tomato tart very good. As good a burger as you will find anywhere near. Greens a tad spicy. Service good & attentive. Food & wine priced fairly, but no bargain. Menu may be more limited than some would like.
This restaurant is great.
The Wait staff is anything but wait staff.
These ladies are the most intelligent engaged young ladies I have ever encountered at a restaurant. They can talk in depth about the menu and most of the art in and around the restaurant.
Enjoyed it very much.
Great experience! Being from Italy I enjoyed the very open and European atmosphere. The plates were not taken away from under your nose with your last bite, the waiters were not always in your face. We could actually sit and enjoy an evening together!! Really enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. And the food was absolutely great. What can I say? A gem in Lexington!
