Been looking forward to this reservation that needs to be made in advance. Service was very punctual. Gathered with friends and felt very rushed to always move onto the next thing as the table next to us with the same number of people didn’t appear to be rushed. Wanted to stay for coffee and a glass of rose and felt like I was inconveniencing the server by staying. Felt this way after each app or meal and especially at the end. Felt like we were on a time crunch for two hours so much so we just closed out and moved to the bar when it wasn’t that busy and the table remained empty. The food was good and service was prompt. Could have done without the pressure to rush a get together with friends especially after spending so much. We had a 6:15 reservation. Would have loved to have given 5 stars if it wasn’t for this. Love eating out and have never felt this way in an establishment.
We were seated quickly, but had to wait awhile (about 15min) for the waiter to greet us.
The waiter was not very attentive
Trying restaurants in DC.
Le Diplomate has a lot of great reviews and I wanted to give a try
This is a very beautiful French brasserie like and you can really immerse yourself in this decor.
On the food side, I was a bit disappointed.
First the bread is served with an American butter (cream cheese like) and this is far from the French butter as French we use to eat.
Second, I ordered the foie gras and I checked with the waiter if it was a real foie gras, he confirmed, but it turned out to be a mousse, this was not the meal I was expecting at all! Good toast but too much of this not so tasty mousse.
Finally the steak frites, well cooked for the steak and not the best fries I had.
Conclusion, atmosphere and decor is great, and the food is not a wow factor at all!
Overall, a delicious experience! The tables were a bit crowded, and brunch on a Sunday was a little loud, but the food and service were excellent.
The food was great, as was the service. However, the wine, a bottle of bourgoulais at a cost of $100, was less than desirable. It tasted like a $7 bottle of wine you can buy at any liquor store. Also the noise level was very high, but I guess that is what is to be expected for a Saturday evening.
Fantastic food. Excellent service. Expensive, but worth it. Recommend for a “special” night out.
What can I say that hasn’t been said before? Le Diplomate is the go-to place because of its reputation for great food, service and prices. But I will say that I was impressed by the quality of the meat with the steak ftites. Usually that meat leaves something to be desired, but this cut was very tender.
Le Diplomate never disappoints. Everything from the food, to the greeting walking in, to the service is consistent. Don't change a thing!
Fantastic brunch. The best bread in DC.
Food was good. Lobster was delish, but the garlic butter is a little much. Overwhelming. The mushroom soup is great. French onion soup, ok. Warm shrimp salad by far the best!! Definitely a must try. The shrimp is good, and the tossed greens and dressing is tasty. The service was great! Thank you
Great energy. Good food. Attentive wait staff. Preferred when they all wore masks.
Great dinner and excellent food! Pacing of service was a bit rushed.
The special thanks giving menu was not as good as other plates in this place
Thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Lively and fun atmosphere with excellent service. Particularly enjoyed the beef tartare, Salade Verte, mussels, and husband said the trout amandine was one of the best fish dishes he ever had. Crème brulee was also fantastic. Reasonable prices for the quality of food.
We really enjoyed our time! Jake was a great server!
Fantastic experience. Our waiter was outstanding, food was exceptional, and we loved the ambiance
Perfect spot to celebrate Thanksgiving with my mom
As usual, the food and service were exceptional. We love being able to take our family and friends here when they visit.
Fantastic as always.
Great food and service. There are a lot of “bad tables” in the bar area and back room. Be careful where they seat you.
This trip to Le Diplomate wasn’t the best I’ve had. It was super slammed on the day before thanksgiving. The staff were frantically taking care of things and did a good job but it was very loud and chaotic. Our appetizers were good. My guest had the halibut and enjoyed it. I tried lobster frites and wouldn’t recommend it. The lobster was ok, but they poured a bunch of a shallot butter sauce that was overwhelming. And they gave me a ton of fries. These used to be a high point of a visit to Le Diplomate, but these were bland. I think maybe they couldn’t cook them twice like normally because they were too busy. It took a while for main courses to come and a while to be cleared. I think I ordered wrong and the restaurant is just too busy to keep the food and service standards up to prior levels.
The food and service was excellent. We started with wonderful oysters and clams on the half shell. Out entrees were salmon and trout, both executed wonderfully. Desert was a zingy sorbet of passion fruit and mango. The only thing that marred our experience is that we had signed up for outdoor seating, but were really seated inside -- we walked through the main restaurant and into a tented area expanded out from the restaurant. It was completely enclosed, large, and had heat lamps that warmed up the interior too much. I wish I had spoken up, because there was true outdoor seating, but as we were seated for dinner at 5:15 on a Saturday I figured it would not get too crowded. I was wrong. I will also note that there were a number of younger, undoubtedly unvaccinated diners in our area. By the end my partially vaccinated son went outside to get fresh, cooler air before desert arrived. Again, I wished I had spoken up, but I also wish that outdoor seating was really just that so that I would not have been put in an awkward position.
Always great. The best bread, terrific fries and food. Excellent service.
Best food, best wine, best service - can't believe we didn't come sooner
French delight. Recommend the trout, the cheeses, the 🥖!!
It was great and service was adequate. They took 2 hours to give us our food however which was not ideal. Otherwise, great restaurant.
We got put at an outside table. The server was doing the best he could but it was clear the poor guy was freezing. I’m not sure how it could have been better but it was painful.
My son had the beef Bourgongon (sp?) and he loved it. I had the salmon which was minuscule like a piece of sushi, and cooked so rare it was like sushi. The garlic spinach was ok but uninspiring. The bread was good
The crème brûlée was awesome and brought overall average up.
Overall the meal felt below expectation, though.

I hade a late reservation and they were out of the Sunday dinner & I had to order something different. It was delicious, but was not what I went for.
We came to town from California to visit my parents for the holiday and celebrated our 22nd anniversary having dinner here. It was wonderful!
This was one of the best meals Ive had in DC. Highly recommend the onion soup, escargot, and foie gras! The restaurant held an effortless french beauty. Loved celebrating my birthday here :)
Best service in DC!
Everything is done just right at Le Diplomate. From the intricately accurate decor, to the napkins, to the paper and plastic cover of the menu and it’s text font style, it’s as if the entire place has literally been plucked out of Rive Gauches in Paris and dropped into Washington DC. It’s not Disney-fake; it looks and feels like the real deal. Plus, with its consistently good food and friendly service, no wonder it continues to be a favorite in DC. Bravo to Mr. Starr and his team!
We were excited to try this restaurant. The food looked delicious and was presented well. Our waiter was courteous but forgetful and appeared rushed. For example, we had to ask multiple times for bread and struggled to get the waiter's attention. Once we did by saying, "excuse me" the waiter put up their index finger at us as they continued to speak to other customers. The food, overall, was nothing special, but well presented and tasty. The bearnaise sauce, in particular, was well balanced and complemented the freshly carved ham on the eggs benedict. What was off-putting was the container my milk came in. It was dirty with dried food stuck to it. If I could get my waiter's attention, I would have asked for a new one. Overall, due to the reasons mentioned above, we gave this restaurant 3/5 stars.
Everything was amazing! The Foie Gras, Escargot is superb, Beef Tartare is so delicious. EXCELLENT!
bummed to be put at a table at the end of the sidewalk for reservation made a month ago. Was freezing and people kept approaching table asking for money. Didn’t even feel like we were ae Le Diplomate. Staff not receptive to request for indoor table. I’m sure there are plenty of people who prefer to be outside so a preference should be asked. Ruined the experience
Outdoor seating smelled very bad
Table was dirty, used my napkin to clean it
Waiter forgot about me many times
Glass, forks, spoons smelled as not well cleaned
A lot of delay to get my drinks, I returned one because it was not good
Discriminated by the reservation hostess
Food is good but the smells made me feel stomach sick.
The food was great, the service a bit hurried and inattentive, and the sound levels off the charts.
