Stephen Starr brings his signature brand of hospitality and design to the nation’s capital with the opening of Le Diplomate, located at 14th & Q. Serving lunch, brunch and dinner, the stylish 260 seat restaurant transports diners to the beloved cafés of Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. The extensive menu features a variety of classic dishes including Onion Soup Gratinee, Steak Frites, and Poulet Roti as well as contemporary bistro fare, with dishes such as Shaved Veal Tongue with Mache and Bavette de Boeuf à l’Echalote. A thoughtfully curated wine list and cocktail program perfectly complements the cuisine and creates an environment suitable for romantic dinners or lively group gatherings. In warmer weather, enjoy dining "en plein air" in the stunning outdoor café where you can take in the bustling energy of DC while sipping on the perfect kir royale.

1- request for no vermouth in martini was ignored. Had to send it back
2-2 separate orders for appetizers came piled on one plate. (ie: oysters and salmon tartare)
3- One entre had to be sent back as it was cold
4- Request for special dessert on open table was ignored and the hostess stated they are too busy to read the requests
5- Busboy continued to come to try to bus the table when all in our party were not finished eating

One of our favorite restaurants in the past was very disappointing. I would not recommend this restaurant

This place was so hyped, and to be fair it was a Sunday night so maybe people were just tired. Drinks were good, appetizers amazing but the entrees were lacking. Veal was sold out, mussels were okay but have had better. The duck l’orange was salty and chewy not what was expected considering the hype…of the skin being so crisp it shattered when bitten into. There was no shattering just blah. Desserts, well I chose wrong as the apple tart had the consistency of baby food! Though the ice cream was good. I wanted so much to love this restaurant but alas I could not.

Finally made it to Le Diplomate! I had heard how hard it is to get reservations there. But 2 weeks in advance I got a reservation for an admittedly early 5:30 on a Saturday. And upon arrival we asked for outside seating and got it. The pate was heavenly. The lightest and creamiest we’ve ever had. Onion soup, halibut, veal and desserts were all very good. But best of all, the tab, with a bottle of wine, came to only $178 (2 people). In addition, you can purchase banquettes or walnut-cranberry bread which are superb and which you can sample with your dinner.

A perfect restaurant.

The only thing better than the dishes on our table were all the options on our neighbors’ tables.

This just means that we’ll have to be back.

Plenty of available tables along the street. The inside seating was well ventilated. The chicken curry sandwich was very good. The bathroom desperately needed cleaning and attention.

The food was outstanding but the manager was very awkward regarding wines. Actually pretended to know more than he did and made up some story about a wine being bad when we know they just didn’t have it. Overall if a restaurant is going to serve such excellent food and have a strong wine list at least hire someone who knows about wine.

We looked forward to returning to Le Diplomate for the first time since pre-pandemic. The food and service were every bit as good as we remembered -- and kudos to the wait staff and the kitchen for that. My caution would be about outdoor dining: due to rising Covid variant infections, we opted for outdoor dining. Unfortunately, we were not seated along relatively quiet Q Street, alongside the exterior wall of the restaurant; instead, we were situated in a cubby built in the former parking lane of 14th Street, where cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles zoomed by throughout the evening. This is not to fault Le Diplomate for our unfortunate accommodation, but I would STRONGLY recommend that if you are going to sit outside, then try to score a table along Q Street, not 14th Street.

Hope to visit again when we're truly post-pandemic.

they do not have experienced servers and the food was terrible. Basically had french fries and bread for dinner. The men's restroom was disgusting. The steak came rare instead of medium and was too tough to chew. Two sent it back and the steak came back well done. We have eaten there many times and this was a terrible experience. We were celebrating three birthdays. So disappointing

I have always enjoyed Le Dip, but lately I am finding it has fallen flat for me, and I go there less and less often. The food is consistent, especially the burger, so my comment is on the service. The wait staff just seems less welcoming. Perhaps our waiter was having a bad day. Perhaps. He was a bit patronizing and abrupt, and then was mostly absent. They were out of an item we ordered, and the manager was extremely apologetic, and we really appreciated his going above and beyond for a such a small issue, so it was a real shame that the waiter is not on the same page and instead is a rather tepid personality.

Food was impeccable! We did sit outside on a very very hot day so that was a downfall. Also the wait staff accidently spilt a frose on the table and some got onto me (which was by not means on purpose, it was absolutely an accident) but it was unfortunate. The food is always to die for though and we will be going back (just sitting inside)

Another great evening at Le Dip! Reliably delish French classics, wonderful service. A bit too loud, am glad we were just a party of two, but that’s sort of what you get at a bistro in Paris too
