Service the last two times I have dined here has been disappointing.
Feels like you stepped in PARIS . From decor to music the whole ambience is perfect Brasserie . You San see People from all ages. Business dinner to dates this family special occasion to just a glass of vin with an appetizer before heading home . No wait with reservation . Excellent sevice and food. We had the steak frites cooked to perfection and Mulle frites . Shared a profiterole .. best vanilla ice cream filled with a slice of banana inside and warm rich chocolate outside . Beyond this world .
Great food and excellent ambiance!
We had such a great time at Le Dip on Sunday. We've been here many times, but this restaurant seems to maintain their high standards. I've had many things on the menu (and enjoyed them) but I always return for the delicious trout almondine. It was cooked so perfectly in a lovely brown butter sauce. We also enjoyed the fresh oysters, the warm shrimp salad and the steak au poivre. All were outstanding and perfectly cooked. I do not know how this restaurant does it. All of our meals were delicious. The atmosphere is always fun. We look forward to returning soon!
Lovely atmosphere, not creative or innovative menu but does the classics with superb ingredients and expert cooking. Service is usually first rate, but last time there were unprofessional glitches (no silverware, warm towels before the meal). But it is always a pleasant experience with classic French food done well.
Never disappoints. This time we celebrated the birthdays of two friends. Staff surprised us with two candle-decorated desserts, gratis. The food was delicious. The cocktails were innovative and also delicious. Our only complaint was the noise level. We will definitely return and will recommend to friends.
Great food and great service
Great for Sunday Brunch. Make res 2 weeks in advance.
We love brunch at the Le Diplomat. You need to book almost a month in advance for a Saturday or Sunday. What surprised me, sadly, this last time, is after 45 minutes, the table started to be cleared. At one hour, everything was removed from the table, I laughed and said, time up! The busboy said, well, it is a weekend, we are busy. This rather annoyed me. I am cognizant of a vibrant and active restaurant. I don't feel an hour or max, hour and a half to have a meal with friends is asking too much! It made me feel guilty for not wolfing down my food in 30 minutes! Seriously folks, I know, I know, I know, you are busy and a hot place, we love it too! Let us eat a meal without being forced out.
Husbands birthday—-noted on reservation, but ignored at restaurant. Arrived at 11p on time for rez, did not even get served water until 1130pm, AFTER literally reaching out and grabbing a waiter by his apron since hand signals had been ignored. Yes, it was Saturday Night and very busy/jampacked, but I don’t care. Get more staff. Fried sardine app was delish. Green salad was overdressed (opposite of a French restaurant). Burger was perfectly cooked. Steak tartare was over seasoned...compared to the 3-4x I’ve had it there before. Still edible… But I had to use all of the toasted baguette they supplied with it which I never usually use. As I said, I’ve been to the restaurant several times before, and services always C+ at best, but the food is usually magnificent. It has a true brasserie feel to it if you’re looking for an experience of the hustle and bustle of a busy Parisian street. But there are plenty of excellent French restaurants in DMV where one need not fight for their food and service. Stephen Starr lost some stars in my book. Maybe Le Diplomate’s time in the spotlight is coming to an end.
My husband took me for date night. Even tho it was really noisy, we enjoyed the food and the service was outstanding. The next time, we'll try for a booth so we can talk a bit more. Overall, we loved it. We shared the Le Grand Aioli - delicious! I could eat that alone for my meal. For entrees, I had the roasted chicken and he had the Norwegian Salmon and dessert we shared the Apple Tarte.
Moules & frites were outstanding! Skate was ok, not great.
Feels like being in Paris!
This restaurant is amazing. Have been here so many times. The foie Gras was absolutely delicious
We were SO HAPPY we got a last minute reservation. Incredible food, amazing service and the atmosphere is fantastic. No wonder it's always on DC's top list.
Always great! Escargot were fantastic as is the bread basket.
The food here is so delicious, but they aren't great for accomodating gluten-free diets. Also, the noise level makes it difficult to have a conversation. Our table was not ready when we arrived and we had to wait in the crowded and loud entryway. Lastly, beware family diners, I had a 13 year-old boy with me and he was quite taken aback by the nude photos in the men's bathroom!
We were celebrating a birthday
Amazing food, as always.
Our party of three visited Le Diplomat while on vacation in Washington DC - and what a treat! The ambiance was wonderful, reminding all of us of several lovely little restaurants we ate at when we were in Paris. We had cocktails to start the meal, and as a special treat, these were imaginative and fun. The appetizers were stellar, with a half-dozen West Coast oysters and a perfect steak tartare with a raw quail egg - all excellent. Main courses were also very good, with the veal and skate wing flawlessly executed. Another superlative highlight was the dessert and coffee selection. We shared a divine apple tart, and the Vietnamese cafe was a truly special treat.
The only misstep was that one of our entrees, the steak frites, when ordered rare, was a bit tough with some unpleasant tendons that made eating it a bit challenging.
The service at Le Diplomat was efficient and attentive, but not the friendliest we've had - but we had absolutely nothing to complain about.
Overall, a wonderful meal. It was expensive and a bit of a challenge to get reservations.....but well worth it! One of the true highlights of our trip!
The service could be improved. We had to call several time the waiter to be served and to take away the dishes after the main meal and before the desert.
I love nearly everything about Le Diplomate. The only issue with coming here is really the host/hostess staff. They are always “on schedule” regarding their tables but yet there are always empty tables. Granted they may be for other parties but it may just be that they don’t seat people early. I’ve almost never been seated early but I was seated late this visit. So be timely but not too early.
My family & I were visiting from NJ, we had such a wonderful time! Service was top notch and the food was fantastic. It’s definitely loud, but if you’re having a good time who cares? Arthur was our server and he did an amazing job. Thank you for the experience, Le Diplomate!
I had requested a quiet/romantic spot for an anniversary and we were scrunched at the end of a connecting part of the restaurant right by the kitchen and next to a table with silverware and plates where we could hardly hear each all night. The service was great and the food very good, but the price was not worth the poor experience due to our placement and I will rethink returning. Disappointed
We have enjoyed this restaurant before. But on this night the food was far too salty in all of our dishes. In addition the sound level stayed above 80 dB. So we could not hold a nomeral conversation.
This is a great place and I hope this wa only a one off and thing will be better next time we try it.
Overrated in every sense. Pricey and you don’t get what you pay for.
Bistro perfection. Always a little crowded but a drink at the bar while you wait allows you to soak up the atmosphere. Onion soup is delicious. Steak frites and the half chicken were both excellent.
Le Diplomate is the closest thing I’ve found to a European dining experience, in D.C. The staff are knowledgeable, well trained and very courteous. It can be a bit congested at the front of the restaurant, but there are lots of quieter areas. Food is delicious, great selection of wines, and really great cocktails. I love this place for special occasions or regular dining. Great for brunch! Perfect for dinner.
Took me five years to eat here and it’s now one of my faves in DC. Perfect ambiance- excellent balance between lively bar and stellar dinner setting. Food is fantastic, service perfect. Everyone should eat here.
Great frites. Otherwise food is greasy with too much salt. Dessert relies too heavily on sugar.
Perfect dining experience. We'll be back for sure!
It was amazing!
Transported back to Paris through Le Diplomate. The food was classic French with some twists. Our server Kevin was perfect in timing, recommendations and accommodated our whole30 requests. Definitely will return.
Wonderful evening, Tito our server was Tops.
Everything we had was delightful. My personal favs was the warm shrimp salad and the mushroom tart.
Cute area great for a date and food tastes great. I would go again :)
We love the champagnes offered here...even the BTGs are very good, and an excellent lead in to the warm shrimp salad. The service is outstanding...and consistent with other Stephen Starr restaurants. Le Diplomate is a happy nod to Paris without leaving home.
Had a wonderful time! We really enjoyed ourselves.
Great experience. We really enjoyed it and were seated by the window which is what we wanted.
