Abate Pizza started in 1956 by its founder Joseph N. Abate, also know as "pop" to his family. He opened his first pizzeria on Whalley Avenue and called it Luigi's, after his father. He set out to make the perfect pizza, experimenting with the best Italian products and succeeded with a pizza everyone loved.As we know, behind every successful man is good women and her name is Rose, Joe's wife. Rose supported and worked with Joe while rising their seven children. Through the years, they owned and operated several successful pizzeria, along with their children.Joe eventually retired and handed the reins over to his son Louis. He ran the family business for several years before venturing off to open the first Abate Pizza restaurant in New Haven's Little Italy on Wooster Street.

    The location was good and the atmosphere was cool. However, our food was not timed well so we waited a while for entrees after our appetizers had already taken a bit. We were a party of six and sat in a large booth that faced the service station and bathroom entrance, not the best ambiance for a birthday celebration. I had noted in our reservation that it was a birthday and nothing was done to celebrate. Our server was attentive but also seemed like we were a hassle.

    Dinner was a large portion and delicious. Our server Sue was exceptional! She was very attentive and pleasant. We enjoyed the delicious shrimp cocktail, salad, steak, chicken paprika and chicken thighs. Our side dishes were roasted potatoes, honey carrots and mashed potatoes. Everything was great! The strawberry margarita and chocolate chip espresso martini were yummy!

    This was our first time going to La Pizzazz and we will definitely be back! The restaurant itself is beautiful and serene. The staff could not be any more accommodating and the food was absolutely incredible!
