Market Place Tavern is the latest concept and restaurant for Market Hospitality Group (MHG). The Tavern which overlooks the Litchfield Green, is the oldest public building in town and one of the oldest penal facilities in the state. It was built in 1812 to serve as a jail for British prisoners during the War of 1812. A cell block and a three-story wing with additional cell blocks, which now is part of the restaurant’s bar area, was added in 1846. The jail closed in 1992 and was used as a treatment center for men serving prison sentences. It shut down again in 1993 and reopened in 1994 as a rehabilitation center for women facing incarceration. When that center closed, the state decided to sell it.The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features “American Tavern Food” with Craft Beers and Cocktails made with local spirits.     We were welcomed to our table with a celebratory note since it was our 45th wedding anniversary and they had reserved a very nice quiet table for us overlooking the beautiful water fall. We were then given two complimentary glasses of champagne which we had before we ordered our usual glass of wine and IPA. We each started with a half-dozen PEI oysters which were so sweet and delicious and then we each had the Cioppino which was excellent. It was a wonderful mixture of clams, mussels and scallops in an excellent tasty broth which we delighted in sopping up with the toast and a soup spoon. We finished the meal with a cheese plate and ice cream which were both served on platters with "Happy Anniversary" written on it. The service was very attentive throughout, the experience and the food were wonderful and we can't wait to get back there.

    We had not been here in a while and the new menu has several interesting additions besides our old favorites. The coconut shrimp appetizer was good and my shrimp risotto with corn, asparagus and bacon bits was exceptional and large enough for a complete helping there and enough leftover for complete helping the next day.
