Dawn Eatery in Hyde Park is a total gem. Windows are large, allowing all parts of the restaurant to be bright, and the menu is varied and full of delicious southern cooking. The wait staff is always nearby, checking in to see what additional orders are desired and/or if the food is flavorful. Make sure you make a reservation before showing up— the word is out that this is a great example of southern cooking, and tables are always full.

A Chicago friend wanted to give this place a try when I came into town and are we glad we did. The entire team at Virtue has created a restaurant that well deserves its reputation for quality and service. I’m constantly astonished, as a Southerner, the number of restaurants that focus on Southern cuisine. I grew up on it. It’s what our mothers and grandmothers cooked for supper. However, what the team at Virtue has done is elevate that into fine dining cuisine served in a relaxed but upscale atmosphere. We stared with a classic: fried green tomatoes, served with a remoulade and poached shrimp. It’s easy to mess up on the tomatoes but these were perfectly fried with a crisp crust, and the texture of the tomato intact. We also had the duck liver mousse (served on really good bread). The pate was whipped into an airy spread that if I didn’t know better and wasn’t looking at it would say it was a cheese, and I mean that as a complement, because, you know, cheese is the best. It was served with the perfect proportion of strawberry jam, making this an almost upscale PB&J, but with pate. Entrees were next. The short rib was fork tender. Served with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes, this reminded me of Sunday pot roast. But what made this dish special was the onion gravy. I wanted more of the gravy. Mainly to have something to eat with the biscuits we got. The real star of the show was the lamb loin, served with black lentils, asparagus, and harissa. The lamb was perfectly prepared, well seasoned, and complimented by the sides. For dessert we had carrot cake served with a salted caramel. Our wonderful server Rog suggested some homemade vanilla ice cream to go with the cake, and I’m glad she did because that salted caramel paired perfectly with the sweetness. Given the quality of the food, the service, and the location, this meal (which was more than filling and we probably should have taken some home), was well worth the price. Magnificent!
