"we were on vacation, having eaten at several ethnic restaurants, Greek, Italian and Indian and this was delicious Americana. Recommend it to anybody who wants quality food. Also one of our guest eats gluten free and they were able to accommodate us."See more
"There have been a succession of mediocre Japanese restaurants at this location over the years. Finally, there's a high-quality Japanese restaurant occupying the space.
While there are a few non-standard Japanese dishes on the menu, what makes Taikosho stand out is its attention to detail. Tried their gyoza (which we normally avoid at most Japanese restaurants). Delicately flavored stuffing, fried just right, order of gyoza connected in thin membrane of rice crepe when served. Donburi was obviously cooked in iron pot that it arrived in - each grain of rice clear, flavorful and distinct; had a layer of crunchy rice at the bottom. Most unlike normal donburi where they dump cooked rice into serving contained and put toppings over top.
Quality of seafood is where Taikosho stands out. Not as good as ultra top-end sushi restaurants, but not charging $150+ person either for shushi/nigiri. 10 piece omokase nigiri was $40 and a great value. Nice selection of very good quality seafood - rice under seafood flavorful, moist and nicely molded.
My brother-in-law is a Japan-ophile (taught at Japanese naval academy at Eta-Jima during his Naval career), thought that this was one of the best meals he'd had for quite some time. His wife is Japanese-American and loved the chowan-mushi.
Desserts available mostly on weekends, as are some of the most expensive seafood which is flown in from Tokyo. We aren't heavily focused on sweets, so our mid-week dining with limited desserts wasn't an issue for us.
Definitely one of the better Japanese restaurants in the central Peninsula and fills a gap in the Millbrae-Burlingame-San Mateo-Hillsboro area. Look forward to eating there again when we aure in the mood for good Japanese cuisine."See more
"Happy hour is a good price.. Thank you for a friendly service! Manager Jimmy and his staff were awesome! We ordered a new drink that we thought was a regular piña colada and it wasn’t, we were not drinking it really, because it was not what we expected and we didn’t want to complain. (The fear of: We didn’t want people to spit on our drink lol) For some reason he came to us and chatted for a couple minutes and we kinda told him our story, he immediately told the bar tender to make us the regular piña colada 😊"See more
"Went for a special occasion for a reservation at 7 and arrived 30 minutes early and was seated almost immediately, got super lucky. Cook was super funny and I scored a shrimp in his hat! Service was alright but understaffed that night, our server was probably helping around 5-6 tables by himself and couldn’t attend to our table like that sadly. I am still going back cause this place builds that anticipation since I am watching them cook my food with interaction!"See more
