Amaranta is a relative newcomer to the Hobart Indian restaurant scene and has established itself as a high quality destination in the heart of the city. The fit-out is classy yet subdued and makes the most of its modest footprint to provide a range of seating options for diners. The bathrooms are immaculate…a big plus. The quality of the food, drinks, service and background music was consistently high during our two hour lunch. Our waitperson was responsive at all times and made the effort to ensure that the spice levels of the entree and mains were consistent with our preferences. If I had two areas for suggested improvement, they would be, one, the portions of goat served were far bigger than they needed to be for ease of eating, and two, it’s winter in Hobart, not the height of summer, tell the owner/manager to ditch those flimsy shorts and get some decent pants happening…I want to see beautiful food, not hairy legs.

Staff are always accommodating. The setting is stylish and exceptionally clean. The menu is varied and reasonably priced. Drinks are fabulous. It’s our ‘go to’ in Hobart.

Lovely lunch with attentive service. My only suggestion is to have some lighter options on the lunch menu.

So glad we noticed Hampden Bar and Bistro on a walk around Battery Point and decided to book for the next evening. Everything we ate, a shared entree, shared steak and sides and shared crème brûlée were delicious. The steak was particularly tender. I rarely order steak but this did not disappoint. The waiters were helpful and warm and the physical environment charming.
