Claudio Pirollo grew up in Belgium where he soon discovered his passion for cooking as he wandered around his father’s fine Italian épicerie (grocery store) and watched his mother prepare dinner every day. The dual influence of Italy and Belgium triggered Chef Pirollo’s aspirations to develop his knowledge and experience with different flavors.A Trattoria is not a pizzeria, it is an Italian-style eating establishment that is generally much less formal than a ristorante but more formal than an osteria. It is similar to what the French call Bistrot.Trattorias are traditionally family owned, casual, rustic neighborhood restaurants found throughout all of Italy that offer fresh, regional, local and family specialties on the menu.

They were running out of the butternut squash raviolis, we had two orders at our table, so they split the order and we chose the crab ravioli for the difference. Delicious! Always a good spot! Great place to meet for lunch with friends!

Our overall experience was excellent. The food was delicious. The ingredients were very fresh. The service was attentive. The wait staff were knowledgeable about the menu and willing to make changes to address allergies and preferences. The menu was not large, but was varied enough to be interesting. The entrées were creative and paired nicely with the side dishes. Everything was cooked to perfection. And yes, we paid top dollar for it. It was an expensive evening, in the 250 dollar range for two people (with wine) but worth it.

We (a party of 8) celebrated a birthday at J. Gilbert's. To start, the hostess was extremely helpful putting us all together at one table in a back room (initially we had 2 reservations for 4 each). Then our server, Durell, did a great job walking us through the menu, including children's options. Most of us had petit filets, which were flavorful, tender, and cooked to perfection. The crab cake order had two big jumbo lump crab cakes, which were reported to be excellent, as were the potatoes au gratin. The baked potatoes were huge and drenched in butter. The prix fixe menu is a good value as you get a soup or salad starter, a main course, and a desert. The winner of the deserts was the apple crostada (although it was served with chocolate, not cinnamon, ice cream as apparently they had run out of other flavors). If you really like carrot cake, I would not recommend their version as it's non-traditional with some sort of caramel stuff between the layers, making it way too sweet and overpowering the other flavors. Everyone went home stuffed, happy, and with leftovers :-) We'll definitely go back the next time we need a meat fix!
