Michael Bong didn’t come to Japanese cooking along the obvious route – he’s Korean, for one – but now that he has, he’s certainly making the most of it. Tomodachi Izakaya & Bar on Little Malop Street in the centre of Geelong is a tribute to the corner bars of Tokyo, with a focus on japanese tapas and warm dishes mates that come off it. That results in top-notch pork belly, beef and chicken thighs for the meat-eaters and salmon, prawns and scallops for the fish fans as well as beancurd and vegetables for the vegetarians. Aside from the grill, there is also an astounding array of sushi and sashimi dishes, octopus pancake balls, salt and pepper squid, alongside dessert options and a long cocktail menu that befits all the best, boozy backstreet izakaya joints in Japan.     We had a lovely meal to at Frankie. The food was excellent. Brilliant menu with generous optuobs and info for dietary requirments. Great service. It was rather noisy though, a challenge for a hearing impaired person. They must be doing something right to have a nearly full room on a Monday nighg in May.

    The staff were so patient and kind, I was on a first date and we ended up talking for hours, the staff were very patient and the evening, the food was fantastic!

    Beautifully presented meals, in a lively cafe ambience by friendly, efficient staff. Quality of food was exemplary. A north-facing orientation means the dining area is filled with natural light (and warmth on a cool day). Really good coffee. Exceptional value for such a gem!

    High tea for birthday which was peaceful and friendly. Staff attentive even taking our photo. Food was delicious and well presented. I would recommend visiting this lovely venue
