The Black Bull Inn, Moffat is an independently owned, award winning Scottish hostelry, established 1568. The oldest hostelry in the area, the Inn is well known for its links to Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Poet who visited during his heyday. The Black Bull is also connected to another notable character from history – the controversial Earl (Bonnie) of Dundee, who commandeered the Black Bull as HQ in the 17th century and oversaw the persecution of Scottish Presbyterians from within its walls. With olde world ambience and atmosphere oozing out of its walls, the Black Bull is a welcoming, warm and interesting place to visit, with touches of traditional Scotland interwoven with contemporary twists and is everything an ancient Scottish hostelry should be. We do not accept orders for Afternoon Tea without prior notice. Dogs are welcome, so much so we now have a dog menu! (though we regret they cannot accompany their humans on tours). We serve the best Scottish food, wine, craft beers, ciders and of course our own Single Cask Single Malt Whisky made here on-site. Please as staff for details.     Another fantastic meal in The Back Street last night. On arrival, we were welcomed by our lovely waitress, Suzy, who looked after us brilliantly all evening. We decided to go for the Wednesday Steak Night menu; a large sirloin steak to share, peppercorn sauce x2, chips x2, a portion of macaroni cheese, which all tasted fab and was cooked to perfection. The offer includes a bottle of wine - all for an amazing £60! The Back Street never disappoints and we can’t wait for our next visit 🤩

    If you want basic and cheap food with no atmosphere then this is NOT the place for you. However, if you enjoy good food, lovely wines, excellent service and a wonderful taste explosion with every bite then this IS the place for you. The staff are very friendly, extremely knowledgeable and very professional. They know all about each plate that is served and give you a brief explanation of the ingredients and flavours you can expect. I’d been for lunch a couple of times before and this was our first evening visit. It won’t be our last. Perfect for a special occasion.

    Great menu and midweek specials - Malabar chicken curry was delicious and the venison burger was devoured in seconds. Nice selection of non alcoholic cocktails and excellent wine list. Another repeat booking for great food, excellent service and a beautiful setting.
