Foghorn Brewery was born of a dream to make craft beer the way it ought to be made—from grain to glass all under one roof.The historic building in King Street had been abandoned for several years when we first set foot inside. In that dusty old warehouse, we saw the potential to create something really special.And so it was that Newcastle’s first modern craft brewery opened its doors in April 2015. The town’s industrial roots have played a big part in shaping the unique character of Foghorn Brewery. Built from the ground up, this art deco era warehouse with exposed roof trusses now houses a custom 1800 litre brewery.

You’ll need to be in on a few secrets to visit Coal & Cedar. This hidden speakeasy has no signage and no doorbell. Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Rest assured, it’s worth the effort, having just won Best Regional bar in Australia 2016.Once inside, you’ll discover a moody, eclectic cocktail bar with an urban edge. Exposed brick walls and dark timber are complemented by dim lighting from vintage chandeliers. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. In 2014, they packed their bags and moved from Sydney to the state’s largest regional city to work on their new dream bar. They found the perfect site on Hunter Street, which was just dingy enough to house a Prohibition-style speakeasy. Transforming the space with taxidermy, eccentric images and many a bottle of booze.

    What a hidden gem, My husband and I booked for a meal before heading to the theatre and we certainly were blown away to find this place. WOW the food was 10/10 and served hot ( wonton soup, lobster dimsims, Korean chicken, fried rice to name a few) Plus the fabulous cocktails lychee Martinis! The staff were so attentive from the moment we walked in, The atmosphere such a great vibe, filled with a mix of couples, groups and families! We will be returning asap with friends to share this amazing restaurant and experience. Thank you Hao Chi Newcastle for a fabulous experience dinning in your restaurant.

    An absolute gem and one of the highlights of our holiday. From the hidden, speakeasy ambience to the magnificent cocktails Coal and Cedar is something everyone needs to experience. The staff are knowledgeable, engaging and ensure your time there is thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend to anyone that they take the time to find Coal and Cedar. It is such a great experience, and will want to return as soon as possible, just like us.
