Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure. When weather permits, guests can enjoy their dinner on our outdoor patio, soaking in the last rays of sunshine in the heart of Oregon Wine Country.

Perfect! Upscale, but comfortable. Allred provides upstairs and downstairs seating, views, a fireplace, tables and booths, cozy settee areas, and smaller seating/table areas. We tried many items from the menu and all were spot on! The fried avocado was interesting and filling. Tasty, with a golden, crunchy (panko?) coating outside, soft and creamy inside! But almost too much if a starter to dinner. The Bistro steak was flavorful, garlicky, grilled to a perfect medium rare. Brussel sprouts were good with the usual bacon and parm; not too hard, not too soft, not too much to say there. Cocktails are reasonably priced and the wine selection is decent. We tried the brandied apple dessert-- phenomenal! I enjoyed an espresso martini made with fresh espresso. A true martini with a VERY strong coffee flavor, not the usual sweet or creamy deal. Service/meal was paced properly by a very attentive, but not overbearing, Jessica. Only drawback? Difficult to discern where to head when walking in. We went to the hotel front desk which is slightly to the right upon entering and the clerk advised us to go to the bar. Bar staff very busy and not readily helpful to folks standing, waiting for direction. Turns out 1) seating is open 2) head past the bar to the barista who will check you in if you have reservations or who will tell you to sit anywhere. We'll be back! Frequently!

We decided to sit outside overlooking the golf course. Our waitress Kay was very attentive. We ordered bread and butter to start and my husband had the maple old fashioned. They had a special we decided to share (Seafood Medley) and it did not disappoint. Everything had great flavor and texture. Would definitely dine here again.
