Located just a stone's throw from the Hôtel de Ville and the Marais district, Le Coupe Gorge restaurant, with its antique parquet flooring, dressed stonework and red velvet banquettes, exudes the flavour of old Paris and the pleasures of fine dining. The restaurant was founded in 1895 on rue de la Coutellerie, a street that owes its name to the many active cutlers. Its current name is more recent, no doubt due to the offbeat humour of one of its previous owners! On arriving at the Relais du Vin, you will have walked down rue Saint Denis, one of the oldest streets in Paris, laid out by the Romans as early as the first century, so named because it leads directly from the Pont-au-Change to Saint-Denis, where the Saint is said to have collapsed after his martyrdom. Visitors should be aware that this was a ‘gala’ street, through which kings and queens traditionally made their solemn entry into Paris. For these festivities, all the streets in their path, as far as Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, were carpeted with silk fabrics and cameloté sheets.
