Laili Ratings and Reviews
I made a reservation and I have to wait, they put three of us in the small little two-person table, the service was OK, it was nothing to rave about. The food was good but overpriced for what we got. I did not appreciate the small table and I do not appreciate the customer service
Made reservations for lunch on Valentines and arrived a few minutes early. The hostess appeared overwhelmed and unsure of herself and job duties. The food server was just off It seemed like he just didn’t even care about his job. The place is noisy probably due to the high ceilings. The food was good and tasty and at the right temperature but I will not go back.
Laili is a favorite for celebrating special occasions and 'regular' life. Among the draws are the consistently delicious and creatively prepared food (we all had the cauliflower soup and grilled salmon, which were superb); personable servers who are friendly and attentive without being overbearing (though we should not have had to ASK for refill on our empty water jug); the ambience is aesthetically pleasing and, as noted above, 'energetic.' For someone with hearing loss, it's a very challenging environment, especially with large and loud parties (as were present Sunday evening). All-in-all worth the distractions.
We celebrated Valentine's day early and what a treat it was to eat at Laili My Cauliflower soup was creamy and delicious. My wife had the apricot chicken flatbread and literally hummed with each bite. My lamb shank pasta dish was savory and spiced just right , Both of us exclaimed what unique flavors hit our palates. We will certainly come back.
Making a reservation is a nightmare. You can't talk to a real person or ask a question such as are dogs allowed on the patio. When the reservation is made they email you to confirm it but you can't reply to that email. We tried to make a reservation to eat outside and went back and forth and back and forth, couldn't talk to a real person and couldn't reply to their emails. In fact, when we got to the restaurant to eat, it turns out the patio was closed and we had no way of knowing that since that wasn't mentioned on the website nor could we speak to anybody about it. We had no interest in eating inside but it was a special occasion and many of us had gathered so we were kind of stuck inside.
I've tried to call in the past and when they are closed on Mondays you can't talk to a real person either. So generally even though we want to go there we don't because it's so impossible to talk to anyone.
I would highly recommend that they get rid of the Open Table reservation process and just have staff make the reservations. We would certainly dinair more often if we didn't have to go through such a Troublesome process.
Delicious lunch - we ordered 3 selections, asked them to serve “family style” (no split charge that way) and shared everything. We recommend the squash dish for the appetizer. Plenty to share with 2 or even 3. The chicken kabobs were very tender. We really enjoyed the meal a lot. A very inexpensive parking garage is nearby so that makes it easy as well.
Great food and great table service. Weird service to get seated, inexperienced staff at front to get seated. We had reservations but they seated two parties without reservations before they seated us. This is Laili's achilles heal and always has been for some unknown reason. Other than that frustration everything else is great!!
Great as always. Only restaurant in Santa Cruz I ever take friends to. Only complaint is the noise level inside for lunch. Quiet conversation is difficult. Need more sound damping on walls and ceiling. Also, given how warm winter days are now, really need to have patio dining open as often as possible. Much quieter outside.
Though we are picky vegetarians, we have found our special "go to" on the menu which we love and do not tire of it! We always suggest Laila's when friends ask our advice for a great dinner with non-boring and not your usual menu options! Service is fantastic; everyone so friendly; food is served hot and quickly!
For those who are gluten free, it is nice that the restaurant allows gluten free crackers or bread to be brought in to enjoy with the dips and sauces. The only gluten- free appetizer choice at the restaurant to dip into the sauces was a vegetable platter that customers have to pay an additional fee for. Customers can not substitute any vegetables for the bread in any of the appetizers without having to pay the additional fee.
We were particularly impressed with a delicious salmon special and their classic lamb pasta dishes. Portions were generous and prices quite fair for the high quality of the cooking. All diners receive an unusual fresh-baked flatbread with an olive oil and herb dip as a complimentary starter. It was very tasty. They offer a variety of beers including a nice local Santa Cruz IPA.
Definitely would come back again when ready for a celebratory evening out.
