The buffet offerings are spectacular and the quality champagne flows freely, even before you are invited to choose an entree from the menu. It is pricey but worth it. And the setting is all elegance. All that said, I did notice some regular touches missing - napkins were not refolded, and silverware was not replaced between buffet visits (picky, yes, but when you’re paying $95 plus tip you hope for the usual Lafayette standards). No spoons on dessert bar for small custards (and none at my table when I returned to it, either). Staff seemed overloaded, and management distracted by what seemed to be an annoying security detail for some unknown diplomatic guest . Just an off day, I am guessing. It’s always a perfect experience, and yesterday was almost perfect.
We went to celebrate my fiancé’s birthday and had a wonderful tome! The service was impeccable and the ambiance was truly spectacular.
The restaurant has a very pleasant atmosphere and the noise level was conducive to a good conversation. However, the food was fine but overpriced for the quality and the service was only satisfactory, with the waitress not very attentive. (The person who handled the bread and water was very good and at several points we had to rely on him to get the waitress' attention. ) The valet who handled our car was outstanding. b
Had the best experience at Lafayette. The service was phenomenal, and the food did not disappoint. Our server Clarence ensured we had the best experience, and the support staff was also on top of everything (Jean). The tuna tartare and strip steak were absolutely fantastic. can't wait to go back.
Went for Valentine’s Day. The presentation was memorable, and my wife and I certainly wanted to try all the items listed on their Valentine’s day special menu. Since there were two options for each course this was not difficult to do! The sunchoke soup was delicious, but the cauliflower pancetta seemed a bit strange. Cod was good, as was the branzino. I enjoyed the lamb loin while my wife enjoyed the tenderloin filet. She finished with Passion Fruit Gateau while I enjoyed the Heart of Opalys dessert. A bit overpriced for what it was, but we were given the roses on the table at the end of the meal along with some candies and macaroons as a keepsake which was a nice touch.
This restaurant is just so dated. I had a terrible Valentine's Day experience with them. I had not been to Lafayette for several years, but I did not realize that the quality had declined so much. Perhaps it was always like this and I didn't notice. What a disappointment. My husband suggested that they over prepared for Valentine's Day, but I would have hoped that they would attempt to up their game for a holiday. I understand using sous vide to prepare most of your foods but you cannot forget to season. No texture, minimal warmth, and little flavor. I won't bother going back.
The service is always amazing as well as the food selection. It is a great place to celebrate a special occasion. The breakfast is tasty and the brunch is second to none. Be sure to make a reservation so they know to expect you!
The best Washington DC has to offer. Wonderful ambience, highest level service and absolutely delicious food.
Lovely setting and excellent food!
Always a fantastic place! Family favorite for sure!
The food was just okay, not great. Well-cooked and well-presented, but flavor was lacking. Steak and fish were both bland. Service was friendly and professional, but once the restaurant got busy service became slow. They have specialized staff just to pour your water, but not enough actual waiters to take care of your other needs.
This is the best place to dine in Washington, DC. The dining room is tastefully appointed with neutral tones and white tablecloths. The chandeliers are impressive and sparkly enough to allow you to daydream for a moment or two and the views are of the White House. The wait staff is absolutely the best. Their presentation is clean, precise and pleasant. You receive bottled water, an impressive wine and drink selection and delicious tastings from the chef (last nights was a mussel tar tar on a half shell; delicious!). We had soup and salad; also prepared perfectly for the discriminating palate. I had the perfectly pan seared scallops and my dining companion had a 10oz steak; both entrees exceeded our expectations. I don’t usually do dessert but we did not want to end our dining experience so we ordered the pear soufflé. It was delightful, delicious and divine! A medium sized hot, fragrant and sugared soufflé arrived with a potted cream that was poured by our waiter. This dessert takes 20 minutes (the waiter forewarned us that this dessert takes 20 minutes but we didn’t care). This was the absolute best thing I have ever tasted! The blend of pear, citrus and vanilla was the perfect end to a wonderful meal. We were provided a sample of locally crafted salted chocolates to end our experience. The staff gently assisted us with our coats and we left feeling calm, satisfied and happy. This is the best place to dine in Washington because the ambience is beautiful, the food is delicious and plated very nicely and the staff treats you like royalty. Thank you for a lovely evening.
The Lafayette is a great place for business breakfasts.
The staff for service as great, the good average the price was way over priced for the quail
This is hands down the best place we've been in D.C. The Hay Adams hotel is worth a look into the lobby even if you don't dine. Our server, Eli, was excellent. We dine out quite often, and he's one of the best waiters we've experienced. The food was phenomenal. We ordered their specialty of Beef Wellington which was superb. It was actually a very large portion even for 2 so you could take some home. Our other person in the party ordered the black sea bass which he loved. We started with the seared tuna tartare, the daily soup, and the root vegetable salad. Everything was tasty & the presentations were wonderful. The restaurant is beautiful with Waterford (?) chandeliers and artwork all around along with the views of the White House at some of the window tables. Elegance & old world style describe this place well.
If you want to see the "whos who" of Inside the Beltway, then Sunday brunch at the Hay Adams is a must during your visit to Washington, DC. You have a perfect view of the White House, the food is top notch and you can sit and linger and will never be rushed.
Restaurant is VERY expensive but offers views of White House across LaFayette Park. Food was excellent in general except for a duck dish which was ordered rare but was served medium well. This was a Special Occasion and we enjoyed ourselves greatly - though the place was nearly empty due to the Government shut-down.
Always great food and pleasant atmosphere. Lovely place to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They take gluten free (Celiac disease level safety) seriously and handle it well.
We had a wonderful experience that made the visit worth the considerable price. We will go there again for special occasions.
It was a slow night and very quiet. Even still, the service was slow. Food was nice.
When in DC we always try to dine at the Lafayette. The restaurant is beautiful, service impeccable and the food is delicious. If it is not on the menu, just ask....the chef may be able to make something special or prepare the entree a different way for you. A wonderful evening from start to finish. You cannot go wrong on any of the entrees.
Clarence, like LaFayette, is a national treasure.
The Lafayette is a fine dining experience. We enjoyed chatting with the chef who came to our table.
It was nice for a change to have lunch at a restaurant which was elegant, the service outstanding, where the decibel level permitted conversations at a normal voice level and where the food was very good. Prices match the elegance. Would be very good for a business meeting too.
Excellent overall. Classy and refined. Impeccable service. Great, creative food.
Have a couple of drinks while your Beef Wellington is prepared. It will be a night to remember.
Upscale fine dining in a world class hotel across Lafayette Square from the White House. Staff very attentive and menu has tasty selections to suite most tastes.
This is one of our go to places for breakfast when we have friends visiting. The service is great, highly attentive and responsive. The crab cake eggs Benedict is worth the visit. If you are going low carb, might I suggest the spinach frittata.
If you are looking for a perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or are just looking for a superb meal, then look no farther than the Lafayette. Plan to spend some time enjoying the ambiance and conversation with those you bring with an excellently timed and perfectly executed meal. The staff knows the food and the drink menu is not to be overlooked. Take your time and listen to the live pianist play some favorites with a new twist. This restaurant is the place to relax, celebrate, and enjoy a quiet meal in DC.
Ambiance was lovely but considering the pricetag and upper-scale atmosphere, I expected significantly more from our food's taste. Everything was cooked fine, but I didn't eat anything I could call really delicious.
Genuine kind service from the staff. Quiet and warm atmosphere.
Love the ambiance.
Morning service for breakfast outstanding.
Evening service was less attentive.
Specialty steak for $62.00 overcooked and not juicy or tender not once but twice.
Waiter very accommodating and apologized but not his fault.
Advise take off menu and do a nice filet or bone in filet. Not Wagu strip or whatever it was called.
We go back every year to celebrate our anniversary. It’s a special tradition for us and each year the service is impeccable.
It's a beautiful setting, but is highly over-priced considering the quality of the food. Nothing at all special.
The food was outstanding and the service was excellent.
All the staff were particularly observant and gracious. They anticipated needs/wishes, and provided just the right amount of gratuitous advice and help. Very willing to make dietary adjustments and substitutions. Provided the perfect table for 2 people and one guide dog.
Excellent food and the service is outstanding!
It was our anniversary and was amazing.
