La Grotta - Richmond Ratings and Reviews
Very nice restaurant with huge wine selection. I wouldn't call it a date night place but more of a special occasion dinner. The staff was very professional and nice. We had a couple of allergy requests (gluten, soy). They had plenty of options and substitutes for us.
We had trouble finding parking, so we were feeling a little frazzled by the time we got to our table. But we all agreed it was worth the hassle once we settled in. We took my husband's daughter out for her birthday, and had a wonderful dinner. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was exceptional, and the portions were very generous - we all took leftovers home. We thoroughly enjoyed every bite of everything we ordered and we will definitely be back!
As always, lunch at La Grotta was a treat! We were dinning with a very special friends celebrating a special birthday! The staff was flexible, spontaneously meeting our shifting needs to insure we were relaxed and comfortable! As always both food and service were great!
While we enjoyed our meal very much and the server was very pleasant and good, we were not totally pleased with our table location. The first table we were seated at was by the front serving station so we asked to be moved. We were moved to another table right in front of the other serving station in the back. We decided not to worry about it and stay at the second table. But the ambiance would have been nicer at another location. I would still go back based on the quality of the food.
You're not in Miller & Rhoads any more Richmond. La Grotta has created a wonderfully cozy atmosphere where you wouldn't expect one. Our waitress was great -- informative, helpful and attentive. After much deliberation, we decided on their "Three Course Meal with Wine" and we were glad we did. We were able to sample first course, entrée and dessert with wine pairings. Their filet was one of the best I've had and each wine was perfectly chosen to go with the dish. Can't wait to return.
Great food.Nice atmosphere. Service was good. But I was sitting too close to the bar which suddenly as a group of co-workers arrived became way too noisy. I was getting ready to leave but they were obnoxiously loud. Would have appreciated a table further away from the bar. Love and learn.
I was very disappointed in this restaurant . Our table was way in a corner and I sat across from someone which looked at a wall it was very loud as well which I don't mind normally but it was extremely loud . The service was slow it was a Saturday night took forever to get our drinks and the waitress kept wanting to take your order before even got a drink ? Food came it was very tough overly spiced and seasoned . Then the worst game they were six of us and we each wanted our own checks it took 30 minutes for them to get straight what was on each person's check on believable . I will not return
I happened upon La Grotta when searching restaurants in Richmond. I was told by a friend that it was "standard Italian fare". It was anything but standard. The wine selection was excellent. Although the menu was not vast, the focus of quality and taste on the food prepared was beyond measure. The food was delicious and the presentation was a perfect match. Well worth the money spent.
Restaurant was very nice about accommodating our party when we were 30 minutes late..did call first. Service was spotty on checking back for drinks, food, as always, was better than average and the chef made a special dish for one guest. Not the best LaGrotta experience, but a good solid meal for a fair price.
My wife and I were in town for my business visit. We had a chance to have dinner just the two of us, and decided to try La Grotta. Beautiful place with an award winning wine list. What could go wrong? Answer was the food - we tried the wine dinner menu - and wine pairings. The appetizers were OK but not memorable. We each ordered for our main course the veal offering with a cream sauce. Big mistake. Neither of us could finish half of it. Cloying, luke warm sauce that completely hid whatever might have been the quality of the veal under it. Then there were the wine pairings. The wines with the appetizers were excellent whites. Mine was a pinot grigio. The wine with the main course was a barolo. Just not from a good bottle. The deserts were fine. Service was competent and friendly. The main course and its wine pairing ruined it. Very disappointed. Won't go back.
My husband and I were traveling north from Florida to NJ, and found ourselves in Richmond on New Year's Eve. A little research led us to La Grotta as our best local option. The menu looked tantalizing, and it was very close to our downtown hotel.
We were disappointed. The decor and ambience were enticing on a cold evening, but the food simply did not justify the steep prices. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't very good. We hoped to be transported, but found our meal consistently mediocre. My carpaccio was over-dressed, with the vinaigrette overwhelming the beef's flavor. My quail was pretty good, but the sauce was overly salty, and the accompanying greens were rather tough. My husband's veal scallopini was standard, steamer-tray fare, in his estimation. He ordered frog's legs as an appetizer, hoping for a delicacy. They were adequate, but uninspiring.
My dessert (a chocolate bowl filled with berries, zabaglione, and vanilla cream) was fine; my husband's profiteroles were hard as rocks (over-frozen).
We do not drink, and so we can't really comment on the wine list.
We do not have a sense of Richmond's food scene, and whether La Grotta is, in fact, as good as it gets there. It is a restaurant with admirable ambition, but it needs to bring its standards up to the level of its pretensions.
The service was excellent.
LaGrotta was wonderful from beginning to end. We went for New Year’s Eve and even though the restaurant was busy our table was ready when we arrived. Our sever was terrific and the food was delicious. The ambiance was lovely. Can’t wait to take my Mom there for her 91st birthday!
I must say I was disappointed to have selected this restaurant for our New Years dinner. I gave it three stars because it was OK. I love the setting. I think the "wine by glass" is very short - and weak. I'm not a fan of food covered in heavy sauces and such so I'd have enjoyed a pasta dish much more than a fish. The server was very nice but I think many restaurants rush the meal on big occasions.
We had an incredible time on Christmas Eve. The service was beyond excellent and the best food imaginably fantastic. It just can't get any better. Tony and Andrea have done an amazing job on their new location and they should be very, very proud. I know everyone was going to miss their old location because it was so romantic, but after you have been in the new restaurant only a few moments you forget all about the old one.
This was our first time to La Grotta in the new location. This was Christmas eve and often there are not many dining options in Richmond on that night
We were pleasantly surprised and pleased by the nice ambience and good Italian food .
My husband really enjoyed the wine and three course meal that included calamari appetizer large enough to share, veal entree and dessert Tartuffe that he liked so much he never got around to sharing.
Our server Marco did a good job with the wine pairing recommendations. My salmon and asparagus were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The others in our party were equally pleased with their selections.
One suggestion is to validate parking for patrons to remove the obstacle people have to dining in the city now that there are so great dining options in the area.
Hope this restaurant does well in this new location. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
