La Fisheria - Permanently Closed

4.0

$31 to $50
Seafood
In its chic and inviting space, La Fisheria crafts contemporary Mexican cuisine with an inventive flair. Tasty appetizer options include the crispy crab meat croquetas de cangrejo and the ceviche verde de pescado, orange juice marinated fresh fish in a tomatillo salsa. La Fisheria house specialties include the red fish filet pescado and cheesy enchiladas rojas, the creamy red beet risotto with a grilled lobster tail and rib eye de la casa served with truffle mashed potatoes and ratatouille. Homemade dessert, like the churros de feria, the classic Mexican street treat of fried dough sticks coated in cinnamon-sugar, is simply sensational. It would be a shame to not try one of La Fisheria's specialty margaritas, served on the rocks in a mason jar. The cucumber and tamarind varieties are both refreshing and completely unique.

Perhaps it's because they are planning a move to a new location downtown but this place has taken a turn for the worse. This was my 4th or 5th visit to the restaurant. I looked forward to their previous pretty extensive list of Central and South American wines but was disappointed to see they now only have about 8 average California wines available. Maybe they're keeping a low inventory before the move?? But there's no excuse for the subpar service we got. The server wasn't very knowledgeable at all. The food seemed average at best.

This is one of my favorite places to eat seafood. Normally my experience is 5 star but this last visit though the food was still good, the favors were slightly off from what they usually are. The michelada and the crab wings had something different about them that made them lacking from their usual great taste to make them only good. Lastly the service was good in and of its but the waiter over charged two drinks by $2 and he said he was going refund me, but instead he brought me a drink on the house which I did not request and never refunded me the $4.

We went here for Valentines Day and the food was amazing. We sat outside on the patio and so the noise levels were very low. There were beautiful overhead lights that set the mood. The food was amazing. I also had a habanero margarita that had the perfect blend of bite and sweet.

Unfortunately for someone raised in Mexico and very knowledgeable of Mexican seafood dishes, La Fisheria did not meet the challenge of a restaurant I would visit again. We all had fish dishes, the red snapper. Mine and that of my wife was overcooked, and was not the freshest. We also had the 3 ceviches which were OK, but nothing special. I had heard some good things about the restaurant from some gringo friends, but was disappointed. Would I return - yes, to try the ceviche again and only if someone else picked up the tab.

Not your typical Mexican or fish dishes. Tortilla soup had shrimp and they poured the broth over the ingredients at the table. A nice touch so your soup was hot.

My husband and I have been to La Fisheria several times and looked forward to a nice meal for my birthday dinner. We started out with the ceviche verde which was very good. Main course was the Snapper Pibil and I ordered the enchiladas with fish entree which I have had before. The fish did not taste fresh (very fishy tasting), over cooked and over salted. It was cooked to the point of a rubbery consistency. My husband also emailed them directly with our feedback and has not received an acknowledgement. Yet another disappointment.

I ate at La Fisheria 4-6 months after they first opened. My thought was after 4-6 months all the "kinks" should be worked out. How wrong was that theory - I was extremely unimpressed with everything - bar, service, food and quality. I have avoided La Fisheria every since. A colleague ate there last month (Dec 2014) and raved about everything - and he is a VERY picky and particular eater. After he showed me the pics of the dishes he ate, I decided to give it a 2nd chance. I made a booking for last Friday evening (01.02.15). Although the hostess spoke little English she smiled and pleasant. The waiter greeted us and made suggestions for drinks and starters. I recommend both the Hibiscus margarita and the HUACHINANGO ADOBADO ENCHILADAS Grilled red snapper over enchiladas mineras filled with Mexican cheese in special sauce. In short the service has greatly improved. The food was very tasty with good presentation. The service was attentive without being overbearing. However, this is definitely a "special occasion" or "let's try something new" eatery - the price point on drinks and food is quite high! Be prepared to spend at least $100 - cocktails, starter, entree and wine with no dessert.

The mussels and grilled red fish were really very good but the service was incredibly slow. After dinner we waited forever for the desert menu then decided to pass and just asked for the check. We really would have ordered desert, but by the time he came back for our order we were exhausted from waiting. Please keep in mind the restaurant was not busy at all the evening we were there.

We were excited to go to La Fisheria because it's in my neighborhood and I'd read only good reviews about it. I really liked the restaurant's attempt at a kind of Caribe vibe but it didn't really work. It's as if the designer implemented three-fourths of the plan and then gave up. Still, the colorful pastels and cottage feel are charming. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. We had reservations but the dining area and bar were sparsely populated. Before our drinks arrived, however, a large party arrived --- maybe a dozen people or more --- and several tables were dragged screeching across the floor to accommodate them. I ordered the Mexican martini cocktail which was fair --- then switched to Pinot Grigio for dinner. It took a very long time for us to get our drinks (we had to ask where they were), and a very long time to get our appetizers (we had to ask twice where they were): raw oysters and tortilla soup. Our entrees were a whole fish (which turned out to be tilapia -- ugh -- thankfully not mine) and red snapper that was excellent. I mean really, really good. It was served with a spicy red sauce, habanero sauce on the side, and mashed sweet potatoes to defuse some of the heat of the sauces. We moved to the front of the restaurant for dessert -- a flourless chocolate torte that was also exceptionally good -- and some attempt at conversation which had been nearly impossible during dinner. So if I average out the food, I give it a 'good;' the server was sweet but very, very slow; the ambience was pleasant but there was an 'unfinished' feel to the dining area that was less 'minimalist' and more 'we ran out of time/money before the interior was completed.' I doubt I'd go back as there are just too many other great places to go for fish. Oh, and the bill for two people -- with tip it was about $170.00 (that included 1 cocktail, 3 glasses of wine, 2 apps, 2 entrees and 1 dessert).

This is probably one of the most freshest, tastiest seafood restaurants that I have dined in Houston. Its small and simple, but Celebrity Chef Grade cooking. Had the Yellow Fin Tostada appetizer....AWESOME. The menu has a long list of fresh, unique dishes, that makes it hard to choose. The service is top-notch - knowledgable staff, courteous and attentive. My guests were delighted!! I highly recommend it.

The dining experience was pleasant except for the noise level. I had to shout to be heard over the din. Beyond the noise, the food was excellent with a very nice blend of coastal Mexican cuisine that reminded me of my time in Vera Cruz. The service was exceptional as well and helped to make the experience very enjoyable. I will recommend this place to friends and family.

My first visit to La Fisheria made quite a positive impression on me. The food was extraordinarily delicious. However, what truly impressed me was the creative nature of the cuisine; dishes I've experienced nowhere else. As an added bonus, the chef's creations all seemed fairly healthy to me. I wish I could eat here every night!!

We had a nice meal at La Fisheria on Saturday night. The food was tasty, as always. The service was fine for the first half of the meal, but the server lost track of us halfway through and never returned to ask if we'd like any dessert or coffee. It was a little strange. Not consistent with our previous experiences here, so we'll still return for another visit.

La Fisheria was to-die-for! There were so many delicious-sounding appetizers...we knew we wanted to try the ceviche trio (awesome...my favorite was the original ceviche), but when we asked the waiter what else we should try he suggested the octopus, since it was rated one of the top 15 Mexican dishes in Houston. Now I've hated octopus since I had it four years ago in NYC, but I thought that was pretty impressive, so we tried it. So glad we did...AMAZING. I love octopus now :) I also have never ordered a whole fish before, but we got that as well! Best piece of fish I have ever had...and I've had some pretty good sea bass in my days. Lastly, you can't miss out on the Dos Leches dessert. So rich, so scrumptious. A meal I will never forget.

I had the red snapper Pibil style and it was terrific. The flavors blended perfectly. My husband had the grouper which I think was the catch of the day but neither of us cared for the flavors in that dish. The presentation of both dishes was exquisite. We had the sorpresa for dessert and it was wonderful.

We have been wanting to try La Fisheria for some time now, and decided to take advantage of Houston Restaurant Weeks and give it a shot. It was definitely a great dinner and we look forward to going back and trying some different items on the menu. Our group ordered every option on the HRW menu and it was all fantastic. The only downfall, if you can call it that, is a rather short wine list. We tried the only Pinot Grigio on the list and it was good, but would have liked to see a few more options. All in all, it was a great experience and we will most assuredly return!!

Great food, fantastic drinks but staff was not as attentive as expected. I know it was HRW but our waiter was distracted at best. The hostesses sat us at one table then came back 5 min later and moved us without explanation. After we ordered from the HRW menu, our waiter basically just dropped each serving without comments .

Came here for HRW because reviews were good and the menu sounded interesting. As much as I'd like to give this place another chance, the food just failed miserably. There are too many restaurants in Houston for me to go to place like this again. Food: three course meal from HRW (I took all the waiter's recommendations)...The appetizer sopa was lacking seasoning/acidity/anything. Main course taco trio -- pastor taco was incredibly fishy (ate about half), lobster taco was 95% sour cream/pickled red onion (left this on the plate), fried shrimp was smothered in some sort of creamy sauce and was the best of the bunch (which isn't saying much). Dos leches was oversoaked in condensed milk and no red sorbet to be found (as advertised). No thanks.

Great food as always at La Fisheria. My only comment is that I do not understand the mandatory valet parking in the small parking lot next to the restaurant. Why do we need it there? I agree that valet parking makes sense once the lot is full, and is much appreciated, but it is uncomfortable when the lot is empty. La Fisheria should re-think about this....

The food was good although a bit expensive. We tries the Houston restaurant week special. The fish was very good and left me satisfied. They don't do chips and salsa which may be why I wasn't over stuffed! The MX martini was made with mescal which I liked. It wasn't as good as the Oaxacan Rita at Hugo's but very close. The cappuccino was terrible, but they removed the charge. They use nesspresso pods instead of a real machine. If they upped their game worth real coffee I would add a star. Over all it was a great date even if we had to go elsewhere for a coffee. We'll probably be back.

Invited a friend of mine, who loves both Mexican food and seafood, for Houston Restaurant Week lunch. Along with my "agua fresca de jamaica" (hibiscus flower drink), I chose the trio of tacos and wished that I hadn't saved the lobster taco for last! So good, but I was full. Had to take my Dos Leches dessert back to the office. Tasted like one of the two "milks" was almond milk - genious! Two is enough! Wish the price point was a little better to be able to come here for lunch more often! ¡Enhorabuena, Aquiles y equipo!

I finally took the opportunity to try this restaurant during Houston Restaurant Weeks. I've had my eye on this place for a while. It did not disappoint. I went with a group of five people on a Tuesday. We had a reservation and were promptly seated and our drink orders taken. The service throughout was excellent. We ordered three of the restaurant week menu which got us everything and we also added a couple appetizers and a soup. The grilled octopus was tender and delicious and all the fish was cooked to perfection. Everything was very enjoyable and the combination of food and service was excellent in a nice, relaxed atmosphere. I definitely will be returning!

This was a refreshing break from the same old... Really interesting riffs on the food of interior Mexico. Absolutely delicious, beautifully presented. Restaurant week was a good time to try it as their regular prices would have stopped our discovery! The fishing shack style gives an unsophisticated vibe, laid back and cool. But the food is spot on, with an excellent hand at the helm. Waiter Antonio was a gem!
