We love this restaurant for many years since it opened. After they changed the chef about few years ago, their food did not taste good. We went there few days ago for using our points and found their food tasted worse. We ate sushi and tempura. Sushi was OK, but not good...Tempura was so bad... We will not go there again... So sad...

I had been to Kubo's for brunch with a friend -- a great value when roll apps were 1/2 off. However, I took my boyfriend there for a birthday dinner and did NOT feel the same way. The service was okay, but the restaurant and the sushi smelled! FRESH sushi should not smell like fish when placed in front of you!!!

Food quality continues to be the high point of Kubo's. The sushi menu could use some updating, as could the wine list. The non-sushi menu looked good but I did not choose from it this time.

Service was slow to quite slow. Our server disappeared when it came time to get the check and we were there 15-20 minutes longer than we wanted to be.

I ordered the sushi and thought it was pretty good! Very reasonably priced too. Kubo's is in the middle of Rice Village, so there is a lot to do and a good lunch place if you're looking to grab a bite after shopping, walking around, etc.

Much better experience after the previous occasion where we found the menu pretty much completely changed. Although we still miss the lunch specials menu, we could enjoy most of our favorites. Thank you!!

Its not the best I have had in Houston but it is far from the worst. Solid food offerings and its a high energy place with good service. They actually have Sapporo and Kirin on tap.....We decided to do the tasting menu which for the amount of food it was well priced.

By the time the main courses came, we were full however it was so tasty that we had to eat a little more just because. Overall reasonably priced, solid traditional offerings with some Tex styled dishes to please the palate. You will not be disappointed.

We've frequented this restaurant for year, accumulating over 2500 points. We've noticed quality and options declined over the years but still enjoyed frequenting the restaurant. This last update is for the worse. Over favorites are no longer on the menu so we won't go out of our way to frequent this locale as much. Very sad as this has been our favorite for years. What a shame.

Houston has better alternatives for sushi. Granted, we went on Thursday night and many types of fish were out of stock, but their recommendations were only average.

Our server, Rosemary, was extremely attentive and very knowledgeable with the menu at Kubo's. When we asked her advice on drinks and food, she would offer suggestions and recommendations on the menu. We would order based on her recommendations and suggestions and the food and drink picks were delicious. She made our experience very enjoyable! Thank you Rosemary!

Nice place. Good food, ok Happy Hour selections. I would only recommend making more Happy Hour items available. The selection is very small. Other than that good food, good service.

They have a nice happy hour menu that is from 5-7 on drinks and different appetizers, sushi and rolls. It's pretty generous and can be filling at a great price! Our server was super friendly. Also, the atmosphere is nice and quiet, so good if you want to hear your party/date.

We are sushi lovers and order only sushi items.
The food is OK, I thought it would be better. There was nothing special, they don't serve wasabi or ginger with the rolls... Or anything ... we had to ask for it. The soy sauce is the low sodium one, if you want the regular they brought the one that comes in small packages (like ketchup in fast food restaurants) and the rice was a bit more sticky than the real Japanese rice.
We also don't think is a $ restaurant is more like $$. Each nigiri cost on average $3.5 which is quite expensive for just one nigiri. We have had much better in many other restaurants.
Our server was very nice

Overall, I was very impressed with the quality of the sushi at Kubo's. Our waitress was also on-point and provided us with very attentive service. The restaurant is on the second floor of the Village Arcade complex, and it has a nice large patio for outdoor dining.
The only negative for me personally was that the restaurant seemed very quiet. As I looked around, Kubo's was actually at about 50% of its capacity so it was reasonably busy for a weeknight; however, the atmosphere seemed a bit reserved (which is not necessarily a bad thing, if that's what you are looking for).

This was our first visit and we will definitely be back. The pan fried dumplings were the best i have ever had. My kids wanted sushi but my husband does not eat sushi. They had something for everyone. we sat in a booth, which gave us a little privacy but not closed off. Very attentive staff.

Kubo's has an outdoor dining area that is a welcome feature in Houston. The sushi is good but not great. I had the tuna lover plate & my daughter had sashimi- the latter was far too thickly sliced. The happy hour offers good discounts and is offered all day on Sundays. Interesting sounding mixed drinks are available.

The sushi (not talking about the rolls) and sashimi were top notch. We had a couple of typical rolls and gyoza as well; each were solid. The sushi chef provided great service, but the waitress could have checked on us one or two more times. My wife doesn't think it's a romantic place, and I have to agree with her. If you want reasonably priced, quality sushi, this is the spot. If you want trendy small plates, and/or a really romantic atmosphere, go somewhere else.

The sushi daily special is good and very reasonably priced. The tempura donburi is very good but the spicy tuna and salmon over sushi rice was okay. I thought it was going to be chunks of fish but it was mashed up. This is the only dish that wasn't very good.

Nothing special at all about this sushi place. The sushi and sashimi was for the most part bland, tasteless and uninspired. The service was quite poor with delays between checks on us, beverage refills, taking order, bringing the check (restaurant wasn't very busy). The waitress's English was poor enough that it was a bit of a challenge to order drinks and dinner. The restaurant is loud. The quality of the service and food is that of bargain sushi restaurants, but the price is that of a premium place.

It's our first time eating at Kubo's during lunch time. Kubo's has a wide range of delicious lunch options, and prices are quite reasonable for sushi fare. And the restaurant was surprisingly crowded; the waitstaff is most attentive. Highly recommend this place for romantic date meal.

I was pretty underwhelmed. We were seated and received water from the server...and then waited 20 minutes for him to come take our order. And that only happened when my husband asked for the manager. I thought the food was just OK and the prices were too high for the quality we got. An $18 rainbow roll?? If you're in the area and craving overpriced sushi, then sure, why not. But I would not make a special trip.

Great sushi, great service! Located upstairs in the Village Arcade, it's a great place to dine. There is limited outdoor seating, so reserve in advance if you want to ensure a spot. The lunch specials run 7 days a week, so skip brunch on Sunday and head over here instead.

If you love nigiri sushi, you must try this place. I travel and dine in Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. I have consistently been disappointed by the quality of nigiri sushi in Houston. Other reviewers rave about places like Uchi and Katsuya. Those places are fine for Kaiseki ( small plates ) but serve low quality nigiri despite their prices. The quality and variety of the nigiri sushi at Kubo was outstanding. From the chef made Tamago to the quality of the O Toro, every offering was outstanding. To my knowledge this is the only Japanese restaurant to offer real wasabi in Houston. We also loved the tofu appetizer. The flavor could only be the result of the chef's efforts and was clearly not purchased like other restaurants do

I had read about Kubo on the internet from the Houston Sushi Club. I wasn't sure what to make of it as the reviews on Yelp were mixed. My experience:
The first server was slow to get us our drinks. The server who took over after him was amazing. Very attentive, very accommodating.
We ordered Gyoza to start and then a couple of rolls and the Spicy Tuna Hot Bowl.
The Gyoza tasted SO fresh. Both my husband and I agreed it was the best gyoza we've ever had (and we've both been to Japan). The rolls were no frills, basic rolls. They also tasted fairly fresh. The Spicy Tuna Hot Bowl dish was very interesting. My husband described it perfectly when he said it tasted like the base used for Ramen Noodles without the soup and noodles.

I got the recommendation from a co-worker after I lamented about a sushi craving. He concluded it was one of the best and most authentic sushi in the city. I made reservations for 7 but when we arrived early at 6 we only had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. The ambience is very elegant, low lighting like a typical date night. There was a sushi bar in the back packed with patrons happily munching and watching the sushi chef make the creations. We ordered the hand rolls and spicy tuna and both were delicious. Not your typical sushi franchise like Ra. You could tell it was authentic based on the customers, how full the restaurant was and the delicate taste. Unlike at sushi chains, you could taste the fish over the spices. We'll be back soon!
