Kali is a small neighborhood restaurant tucked in between Hollywood and Larchmont village. Created by lifelong friends/co-workers chef Kevin Meehan and Drew Langley, the two have had always dreamed about creating a high-end restaurant without pretension. Stripping away all facades of what fine dining should be, Kali focuses strictly on the ingredient, technique, and service creating a casual environment everyone can enjoy.

Food was okay. I don’t like their wine paring. But $55 for wine pairing, I guess the price is reasonable. I recommend ordering one bottle instead of their wine pairing. For two people, it’s about the same price, but you can choose something you like.

Love this place. The food is well-executed. Quality, but not extravagant. Nice wine list as well.

Kali serves imaginative, well prepared dishes without great fuss. The emphasis is on the main ingredients themselves, the seafood, fish, or meat. The dishes keep sauces and accompanying elements to a minimum. This approach produces some wonderful dishes where the flavors of the main ingredients shine. No question that Kali serves excellent food.

The service was also first-rate. The server was knowledgeable and helpful in making suggestions. We had the five-course meal with wine pairing, and the server described each dish and wine, and took the time to answer a few questions. While the service was very professional it had a few (admittedly minor) rough edges. For truly high class restaurants I expect polished service such as when leaving the table the staff refolds the napkin and lays it out appropriately at your place. Yes, I know this is very picayune, but this act shows interest in and respect for the dinner. This did not happen.

One final minor irritation. For some reason the restaurant decided to play recorded music from the 70s. Now, I happen to like 70s music (I am of that generation), but I found it bizarre that my elegant meal was accompanied by Paul McCartney and Don McClean. Why is it necessary to have music at all? And if you must have music, can't you make it something more imaginative? Whatever manger or consultant decided on the need for music should be fired.

Despite my few (and very easily fixable) misgivings, the evening was lovely and the food was the real star.

Overall, not impressed given one Michelin star rating. There are other great places in LA to dine instead.

Seasonal tasting menu was okay - highlight was the meringue gelato at the end.

Came here for their Thanksgiving 2021 feast. The food was "upscale" Thanksgiving items but definitely not for me. The service was fine. I was about to rate 5 stars BUT the ponytail haired host chased us out after our meal to ask us if our service was okay because "our gratuity didn't reflect that". That was embarrassing and unnecessary since there was a kitchen fee already tacked onto the bill

We went for Thanksgiving dinner and it was terrific. The food was served family style, which was perfect for the holiday. There was so much food(!) and everything was delicious. We sat outside on the patio and it was perfect. The heaters made it very cozy.

So, right off the bat, the hostess(es) absolutely suck. I don’t know if maybe Kali doesn’t treat their hostesses right but it was such a rude experience from start to finish with them. I tried calling and emailing multiple times to place my reservation for 6 since Opentable wouldn’t accept anything above 4. I ended up placing one for 2 and one for 4 just to secure the space for our party if needed. The tone the hostess had when I called her back after she left me a voicemail was extremely curt. I asked to increase the table size as she had mentioned in the voicemail, and she said my mother already called her back previously. She said that then summed it up with “Are we good?” It was extremely rude and unprofessional. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were seated in the dark corner of the outdoor dining. It was cold that night and with only one heat lamp, we were absolutely shivering with the no light/no heater combo. My dad asked right away before we were seated if we could move one table over into the corner with light, instead of being right next to the outdoor kitchen in the dark. The hostess said, “Mm, no. That’s reserved for another party.” She then walked away, came back and put a reserved sign on the other table. ?? We reserved a table too and I’m pretty sure they didn’t specifically request the table in the corner. Then, when we at least asked for another heat lamp to provide heat for the other side of the table that was dark (and therefore colder), she said, “No, we can’t. It’s for other guests tonight.” Bear in mind, nobody was there except us. Our servers were absolutely fine, and the food was as good as the previous times. What ruined the night was the hostesses. @Kali idk what you’re doing but please do something about your hostesses. They’re going to ruin your good name. Let me know when they’re not working and I might choose to swing by again.

We were seated outdoors (blue astroturf and unkept plants) near the storage closet. Both ordered the chefs tasting menu (190 each w/ 1 wine paring + 95) between 1st and second course, the person who seemed to be the manager, got into a brief shouting match about both the front and back of house being short staffed with someone from the kitchen, we heard very clearly as they were around a corner. While out if sight, certainly they were within earshot.
Pacing was quite poor throughout the courses, with varied wait times. Food was good, and well prepared, but lacked creativity expected from the chefs tasting menu at a stared restaurant. Server was polite, and friendly, though service was not as expected, likely due to the tense atmosphere of the restaurant that night and short staffing, I’m sure on any other night she would deliver great service, if she had time.
Overall we went to an expensive dinner ($500+ for 2) with high expectations and hopes, but left a bit disappointed. I assume the dining room feels more sophisticated than the covid style parking lot patio, I assume that when the kitchen is fully staffed the meal pacing is better, I assume that when the front of house is fully staffed the the service is more orchestrated and less improvised.

Fine dining, which I believe they are aiming for, should deliver a certain level of sophistication and presentation, which we unfortunately missed last night.

Dining at Kali is so amazing because it's like going on a food adventure. The quality of the ingredients and the flavor journey is divine. And if you are looking for great wine pairings with all of the beautiful dishes, their sommelier skillfully matches the wines with the flavors of your food. I bring friends and business colleagues here every chance I get. I highly recommend dining here.

Probably the worst worst worst service I have ever had. It took use forever to get water, then drinks. No one asked about additional drinks if we needed or wanted them. There was a table of men doing the tasting menu who has incredible service but our table of women right next to them was completely ignored. Would not recommend at all

Overall this place was great! Friendly staff, unique dishes and a chill vibe. However, we got the chef choice menu and 3/the 8 courses were just a huge miss for us. Beef tar tar was flavored weirdly/the combo was very weird on the palette, then the squab dish (super gamey type of bird) was very un appetizing and for sure didn’t like the presentation, and the rib-eye couldn’t been cooked a Little more was more on the rare side and I just really wanted this dish to hit home. Overall there was no total WOW factor to the food. I really wanted to leave my first Michelin start restaurant wanting more - instead I wished I booked Providence down the street.
Still a cute vibe and their patio is lovely. Maybe next time I’ll just try the A la carte menu

All the dishes are amazing - the layers of flavors, the surprising combination of elements - muah! Our waiter is attentive and honest with his opinions - we appreciate that and he threw in a free dessert for the birthday celebration. The menu is simple and the price is at high end. It is worthy for a special occasion.
