Best fried green tomatoes I've ever had. My husband really enjoyed his shrimp and grits appetizer. The bottomless Julep mimosa is a must! We can't wait to go back!
This was my first visit since Julep's opened for brunch. I live in the neighborhood and was super excited to see another opportunity for a good brunch spot. The food was reasonably priced for the quality and portions. There is a make your own Bloody Mary option, which is a great idea, but the drink itself was just okay. Our server was very efficient and effective, but wasn't particularly outgoing; a little stone-faced, which isn't terrible but it was enough for my group of six women notice. Great vibe, really well appointed. I will return because it's SO convenient to my home and the setting is very pleasant, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come back. Richmond has too many excellent restaurants for any one place to be just good. I think you have to be very good to great to compete.
We had been to Juleps at this location about a year ago and had been wanting to return. The food was excellent, start to finish, absolutely nothing disappointed and a great deal of it excelled from appetizers through dessert.
It was, however a busy Saturday night, and the service was excellent, but very slow. You could see the servers really trying, but they had a lot to cover. Part of that problem may have had the same source as the high noise level. We had remembered this as a restaurant with great food and a noise level that permitted good conversation. Unfortunately there was a birthday party that got increasingly louder throughout dinner culminating in a few guests shouting obscenities to cap off their evening.
That didn't ruin dinner, but it left us rating Julep's a little lower than we would have otherwise. Go for the wonderful food, and hope that there isn't a birthday party!
This was a truly eye opening dining experience for Richmond dining. Most travels trek to Morton's, Ruths Chris, Tobacco Company, etc. etc. But dear friends, Richmond is more than that. Juleps would be welcomed in most towns including NYC and Chicago. The food was absolutely wonderful and the service impeccable. The drink, beer, and wine list has something for everyone. Definitely worth a side trip down 95 if you're in the vicinity. And if you are worried about gluten, they accommodate, diet restrictions - yes
For my wife:
Black Creek Farm Mix Greens // Chevre (Humbolt Fog?), Freeze dried fennel, etc. etc.
Pan Seared Scallops // Woodson Mill Polenta, Tomato, Oyster Mushrooms, Drawn Paprika Butter, Buttermilk Bleu Cheese
Hongatonk Raw Oysters // Blood Orange Mignonette, Pickled Manakintowne Radish
Seared Atlantic Rockfish // Charleston Gold Rice, Braised Walnut Winds Farm Collard Greens, Julep’s Duck Bacon, Paprika
Flourless Chocolate Torte (3 different chocolates including a blond) // Coffee Ice Cream
Delicious meal, will be returning.
Fabulous food. Wonderful service from Al.
Excellent wine list, nice atmosphere.
Food was very good at brunch. Service wasn't the norm at this visit. Also seemed to take a long time to receive drinks.
I was so happy they finally opened for brunch ! I had the country benedict with a lacing of apple butter. Wonder compliment for the salty ham.
Have eaten at Julep's in the past and had a wonderful meal. On this visit all four of us described our meals as average at best. Very disappointed.
We enjoyed our dinner. The food was good and the decor was interesting. Service was good, but not great. Would go back again.
Lovely concept restaurant. Friendly staff!! Lousey parking, don't think of finding a space quickly, had to then walk 1+ blocks. Slow service, cold appetizer and bland, not hot soup du jour. Cold cornbread and cold butter.... With the noise level on a Friday evening, it was challenging to have conversation! We would try again, just not to soo .
Every bite was absoluteley perfect. Pork belly stuffed braised pork shoulder was to die for (think about that for a second). The outside was pan seared to a wonderful bacony crisp. Scallops over polenta was decadent with the polenta every bit as good as the scallops. Venison medallions were perfectly cooked with a wonderful vegetable medley. Chocolate torte paired with a homemade ice cream was what chocolate was meant to be. The wait staff was very attentive but the food service was on par with a European restaurant...at their pace, and quite slow by American standards. Portioning was spot on. We left very satisfied without feeling like we were going to pop. Even though it was slow, the food made up for it in spades and we will be going back.
Great dinner! The drinks were great as were the scallop appetizer. Shrimp and grits lived up to the hype. Highly recommendable.
Great service! Steak was very tough/chewy (wife ordered medium-rare and I ordered medium).
We had a great time at Julep's. I can't remember our waiter's name, but he used to be a chef and he was excellent and very nice. Highly recommend the Brunswick Stew and scallops for appetizers and the crab cake for dinner. We ordered Bananas Foster for dessert and the waiter made it for us right at our table - very nice touch. We will definitely go back!
Well located, great service, delicious meal and good value. Dining area was too cool and drafty - taking away from a very enjoyable experience.
Excellent meal, great service. Will definitely visit again.
First time dining in the new location and it did not disappoint. Service was attentive, and the food was great. From appetizer to entrée we enjoyed the meal.
Love, Love, Love this place. The food and staff never ever disappoint us!
Great for a special occasion. Made me feel like a grown up.
My wife and I went to Julep's for a pre Valentines evening out and to check out the new location. We like the setting and ambiance but it lacks some of the cozy charm of the old downtown location. Our waiter was great, casual yet professional at the same time.
The food was good but not outstanding. My NY strip was perfectly cooked but the side dish of greens was REALLY salty. The crab cake my wife had was large and contained very little filler... nice!
Our mixed drink and martini were also well done, but pricier than expected. What's with the extra $2.50 to make it neat?
For a once in a while night out, Julep's is a good optiond. If you are nervous about price, be prepared to sign the check with a shaky hand.
The service was impeccable! The crab cake was ALL crab, and the strip steak was perfectly cooked and well trimmed.
Had the duck which was phenomenal, I'll be back for a few more items on the menu that looked delicious.
Very disappointed, steaks were fatty , shrimp and grits were mediocre at best , fish over cooked . The waiter was available until we ordered , took a long time to get food . Big disappointment
The food, wine and service were fantastic. We had such a fun dinner. Highly recommend for date night or a party of 4.
as always the experience and dinner - pre symphony - was very enjoyable and we will return
Great service, unique flare on Southern cuisine but missed the core of the south. We had fish, which was cooked perfectly but had no sauce on it. Rice needed something more also. Everything in the south is smothered, covered, or fried!
Comes from a critic who lived in the Deep South for 12 years so maybe a bit biased.
Julep's has a wonderful ambiance and decor as well as an incredible menu. Music played softly which makes it easy to have conversation over dinner. The specialty cocktails and oysters were delicious as a starter followed by our meal which was perfectly cooked. Desserts are equally amazing especially the chocolate cake. A great place for a special night out.
Pricey, but quite good. Atmosphere is very nice, understated and serene. We enjoyed our time very much.
Our business dinner included out-of-town guests who commented that Richmond must really be a great restaurant town! Our waiter was exceptional. He explained the daily specials as well as some of the menu items and recommended several appetizers and meals. While we didn't take all his suggestions, the ones we tried were great. We were not in a rush, and the meal progressed smoothly. We tried the house drink specialty--mint julep, and used the waiter's recommended bourbons. For dessert we shared bananas foster prepared at the table--perfect!
Our three couples have been enjoying Julep's ever since they located on Grace St. It is a great place for dinner before the symphony or an other event downtown. The food is always very good and venue is quiet enough to be able to converse easily with everyone at the table.
The evening was wonderful. The service was great. Al was our server, with the perfect combination of attentiveness, but not hovering. The food was superb. Al gave us great suggestions.
Not spectacular but pretty good. With all the area restaurants not sure I'd return
We have dined at this restaurant previously but not since it moved to its new location. The service was good, but the food was very lackluster. I ordered the rockfish and it had little flavor and was served with white rice. The dish was boring and not as described on the menu. My husband had the steak which was not worth the 36 dollars. It was undercooked and grisly. Juleps is a shadow of its former self and with so many amazing restaurants to choose from in Richmond there is no need to come back.
Food was great, drinks were great, service was great. There was a large, very loud party at the back of the restaurant that impacted what is normally a great experience at a great restaurant.
Great service. We were attended to as soon as we sat down. Our waiter Tony provided lots of information on drinks, specials and regular entrees. Very attentive and food quality was great.
Beautiful restaurant and outstanding service.awesonevwine list but I was hoping for my menu options. Too many duck and lamb items which happen to be my least favorite foods.
Loved the food here and will definitely be back! Fried green tomatoes the best we've had. Shrimp and grits yummy. Fun bananas foster desert table side flambé!
Absolutely amazing experience there, service is top notch, all the food was absolutely delicious, and the wine list was very impressive. I found the portion sizes to be perfect, and the quality of food and beverage second to none. Highly recommend.
Enjoyed New Years Eve dinner here with the family. The food was good, I had shrimp and grits and they always do a nice job.
We had the stea and the shrimp and grits, and both were excellent. The steak was perfectly cooked. Overall, the service was excellent. I was a great meal and seemed a good value.
