Jasper's - Austin - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Jasper's management told diners during the last couple of weeks that they expect to reopen in a new location. We certainly hope that is true. Chef Rathburn's Austin outpost has been a favorite for 10 years. It has been one of the most consistently reliable first rate tables in town. We could always count on delicious food tastefully presented by one of the best waitstaffs for a fair price. We will anxiously await their reopening.
I was entertaining an out of town client with my family. We loved every moment of our experience, and were sad to learn Jasper's was closing. We'll be at the opening of the new restaurant with bells on, and will dine there often. Thanks for a great evening!
Waiter didn't know what the specials were and didn't care. The wine list is weak at best, the best bourbon they had was woodford. I believe one of the sauces on the steaks was a combo of liquid smoke and A-1. All around terrible... Especially when your bill is over a $1000 for 9 people.
I was very pleased with our experience at Jaspers. I needed a last-minute Mother's Day reservation after our previous plans fell through, and was glad I could grab a table here. They accommodated my 90-year old grandmother in her wheelchair, and made my mom and grandma feel really special. The only nitpicking I would have is that my grandma's waffles were burned on the bottom. The waiter was really nice and I was impressed that the manager came by to see how we were doing. Overall, it was a really nice experience.
The house chips with Maytag bleu cheese were a great start as usual. My prime rib had 4 star flavor with 2 star "chewiness". I have had the ribs and the burgers before and sort of wish I had ordered either instead of my prime rib. The loaded baked yukon gold potatoes were really good. The drinks were fine and there was a more than adequate selection of wines by the glass.
We went North to avoid SXSW crowds downtown and somewhat randomly picked Jasper's for a good mid-week meal. It turned out to be a very good combination of a pleasant, upscale environment with high quality offerings of steak, seafood and chicken often presented with an adventurous twist, i.e. jalapeno in the sauce with the pork loin. It was all prepared exactly as ordered. Service was attentive and suggestions were very helpful. The bar was comfortably full and inviting as well. Taken as a whole it was good value, though it is a little expensive for weekly visits. However, it is perfect for a nice, comfortable dinner with someone special.
I enjoyed the establishment. It's in the domain, so nice crowd and the staff was more than pleasant. I require more of a selection of fish. It wasn't out of the park for me so if I go back it will be because someone had to try it. To be fair..... I am picky and without certain things I am used to I'd rather cook my own food.... LOL
I lived in Dallas three years ago. When I lived in Dallas, Jaspers was my favorite restaurant. I was very excited to see there was a Jaspers in Austin when we went there over the weekend. We loved the ambiance, location and service but the food wasn't good at all. The salmon was too crispy and dry on the outside but raw on the inside. The Brussels sprouts had too much sauce on them. I was very disappointed in my favorite side, potato salad. It just didn't have the flavor I remembered in Dallas. Sorry but Jaspers has now fallen off my favorite's list.
My daughter & I had a wonderful Valentines dinner here. We both needed to eat early & the staff said, "earlier is even better!" Each of the four courses were delicious. The red fish was very fresh & pan seared with a nice light crispy crust. Our waitor was very knowledgable & we never felt forgotten. We will definitely come again & early when the noise level is prefect!
We made a reservation for Saturday night and were immediately seated, but that's where the expediency ended. It took half an hour for a waiter to acknowledge us and take our drink order - the only round we ever ordered for the evening. The whole experience took well over two hours because the waiter was so inattentive. Many tables around us complained! The restaurant wasn't super busy for a Saturday evening. The food was decent, though my steak came out much more rare than ordered - it wasn't worth sending back for fear I'd never see it again. Overall, we paid way too much money on mediocre steaks to sit and be ignored.
Went for my wife's birthday. Jaspers went above and beyond to make her feel very special. A happy birthday with her name greeted her printed on top of the actual menu. The service was outstanding. Our server was a handsome young man who was attentive and friendly. We were checked on throughout our meal by several very friendly staff members. The food was top notch and well presented. To top the wonderful dinner off my wife was presented a beautiful creme brulee with a homemade Butterfinger and the plate had a happy birthday greeting with her name on it written out in chocolate.
I would highly recommended Jaspers to anyone for any special occasion as they will go the extra mile to make it a memorable event
Overall, my girlfriend and I thought Jasper's was good, not great. We started with Mussels that were really nicely prepared, but too many of them didn't open - about a quarter of them. That's too bad, as they were really good.
Our entrees were both fish, and were good, but I didn't think they warranted the price. Likely should have been about $5 cheaper.
Service was good.
The restaurant was very nice. I thought it was a dressy place but I saw a lot of people in jeans so I guess that's the in thing to do now days. I was very impressed with the hostess and server. They waited on us that royalty. I would go back. The food was great! I took a picture of each dish!!!!
Our Server would talk for minutes at a time after serving our food. We felt obligated to listen to these stories/lengthy comments, out of an abundance of courtesy. Dessert cookie was as hard as a rock, literally. It was returned, and the next one was a thousand times better.
The check was also billed incorrectly, and we were over charged in excess of $80. Now, we have to wait for the charges to fall off or correct itself.
It made for a rough experience. Even more so, considering we were there for a special occasion.
Came on a Saturday evening. Place was nearly empty. Ordered bread along with entrees and sides-- bread never showed up. A different waiter delivered our entrees and when we mentioned the bread, he was surly about it. Cancelled the bread. Of four entrees, one was good, one was reasonable, and two were really not good (salad had some brown/slimy lettuce and bacon chunks so hard you risked cracking a tooth on them, and beef was tougher than John Wayne's saddle). The one good plate was the scallops and shrimp-- but portion size for that plate was pathetically small, given the huge price. One side was the truffle Mac and cheese-- it was horrible. Tasted (and looked!) like boiled cardboard. We sent that back. All in all, experience was not good, and it's WAY more expensive than we remember. We won't be going back.
