Ironside Fish & Oyster
We are now offering Happy Hour MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FROM 3:00PM - 5:00PM.
Little Italy was built by the fishing industry. Ironside attempts to continue that narrative. It's our contemporary interpretation of the classic fish house and oyster bar. Located in a historic auction house on India St we did a full comprehensive restoration of the building, with three open-air culinary hubs featuring an expansive raw bar, chefs table, and bakery. We tried to be mindful of the past while looking towards the future.
Great vibe. Great food. Table side Banana Pudding is a MUST!
A fun place for a birthday celebration! We went for happy hour and sat on the patio. It was fun watching all the locals and tourists wandering past. Our waitress was super fun, and the lobster roll was to die for! I don’t know about you but I don’t like Mayo on mine and they will do it for you with just butter if you ask-heavenly 😋
This place has some amazing seafood dishes and a great list of cocktails. While we had a few critiques, the combination of ambience, reasonable prices, awesome oysters and lobster, and flavorful drinks still earned this restaurant five stars. Yes, expect to spend a decent amount but when compared to other seafood restaurants, the menu is pretty reasonably priced. Service and ambiance were great.
We started with half dozen oysters, which were super fresh and tasted great solo or with the provided toppings - a champagne sauce, horseradish, and lemon wedges.
For drinks, we ordered the Mai Tai and another cocktail called Pimm’s Royale. The flavors were excellent and the bunches of fresh mint made the drinks really refreshing. However, the drinks could have been a tad stiffer and the glasses served with less ice. Since the prices were okay ($12 or so per drink) and at least tasty, that didn't bother us too much.
We also ordered the crab cake, lobster roll, and roasted carrots. The lobster roll was amazing. The lobster was so succulent and buttery and stuffed into a roll similar to Texas toast - the bread had the perfect crust and soft in the middle. The amount of lobster was generous even when split between two people. The dish also came with a side of fries.
While the crab cake was good, the dish felt like it was missing something overall. It came with one okay-sized crab cake, slices of horseradish pickles, and some tartar sauce. The horseradish pickles were the most unique item on this dish and had a great tang and spicy kick. While I enjoyed the flavors, I'll probably try something else next time. This dish would not be filling for one person so probably need to order something else with it to make it a full meal.
The roasted carrots paired well with our entrees. It's served on a bed of slightly sweet orange yogurt with fried garbanzo beans and other herbs on top. Overall, great food and drinks and will come back to sample the rest of the menu.
Great! We brought our 6 year old daughter and the staff was magnificent to her
Best ambience, food was impeccable, and customer service was perfection. Can’t wait to go back when we’re back in San Diego.
Great food. Great drink. Great ambiance. The lobster roll, burrata salad and seafood is to die for.
Book now. Best seafood in SD
Wonderful food, great experience! visiting here from Chicago and would so come back again!
Came here from San Francisco because of a friends recommendation. Celebrated my other half’s Birthday. Made a reservation one week before.
I made last minute changes to my reservation time. From 7pm to 8pm. I was accommodated.
I was very impressed on the service details. We were seated 10 mins upon arrival. Our server Ali, she was aware that it’s a Bday celebration. She handed us a paper menu with a date that day and with a “Happy Birthday” greetings on it.
Ali explained to us in details about the menu. She took her time and also gave her recommendations as it’s our first time. I ordered the Octopus plancha and she ordered Crab roll sandwich.
Both were excellent, flavorful and rich. We also received complimentary champagne drinks from Ali.
The ambience was dark and a bit noisy, decorations were nice and unique.
Emphasizing more on service… everyone that works there were super and helpful.
Would we go back again? Maybe. San Diego has way too many great places to offer. We will support other businesses on our next trip. But, this place do have a special place in our hearts, mind and palate. Thank you Ironside and thank you Ali for making the night more memorable- Greg
Great service! The food was delicious!
Excellent food and service. Will be back for sure.
The oysters size are very small sometimes nothing in the shell
i wonder what is happening cause they use to be really good before
Excellent all around. The food was great- I got the chefs special crudo and my mom got the lobster roll. We were both very happy with our selections! The fries with the lobster roll were really tasty!
The service was great- we came for my moms birthday and the menu said happy birthday and they brought out a birthday dessert. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and good at making suggestions/ answering my moms many menu questions.
The ambiance was great- no part of the restaurants details were forgotten. We will be back!
Loved the ambiance of outdoor dining- so much energy from the restaurant and the surroundings. We got the seafood tower. Some of the oysters were on the small side but the shrimp were large and fresh! Didn’t care for the small pieces of marinated shrimp. The seasoning was a bit off putting. Server forgot our salad, which should’ve taken the least amount of time. Overall, a great dining experience.
Everything was great!!! Except they don’t do side of Rice instead of all Breads Hoping they change their mind about it…
We haven’t been for quite some time now, but have a great dinner last night with friends. Great food and a nice night out.
Our meal was delicious. Our servers were knowledgeable, attentive and fun. We had a fantastic birthday dinner- the best meal I have had in a long time!
Food waz amazing as always, but service was slow and it was far noisier than other times I have been there.
Alexander S is a great asset to the Ironside Team. He made our experience absolutely amazing. The food was delicious as always.

Saw the happy hour and decided to try the oysters on the half shell. My wife and i ordered 2 dozenThey were very tiny. Asked for horseradish and ketchup to make up our very simple cocktail sauce we love on fresh oysters. Waiter said the owner hates ketchup and won't allow it his restaurant. Glad I didn't order fries.... Unfortunately we ordered 2 dozen oysters. Not only did we not make simple cocktails sauce we like, but the oysters were the scrawniest oysters I have seen. Lot of the oysters had pieces of shell in them.
Ironside is an all time favorite of mine. The food is always great, service is good, and the ambiance is so fun. Highly recommend for oysters and the chard octopus.
They did not have valet and parking was almost impossible.
Amazing food, great environment and service was great.
This was our second time here. Our first time, oysters were delicious and so were the entrees and service was spectacular. Unfortunately, this time, service was so terrible. We waited at least 25-30 minutes for everything we ordered. We ordered the Opah fish for the main entree and it was not our favorite at all. The fish was minimal and in a broth with a very fishy flavor. The zucchini salad was good but a bit bland. The highlight of the meal was the grilled Octopus. It was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection with the chorizo giving it so much flavor. Unfortunately, that also took 30 minutes to come out.
I understand that places may be short staffed but that didn’t seem to be the case here since we saw other tables constantly getting food and drinks while we waited. Bummed us out, but probably won’t be returning to Ironside.
I should add that the raw bar looked yummy, and maybe it was just what we ordered this time, but to us it isn’t worth driving from OC to SD to eat there again.
Fresh fish and oyster bar in a great location. Busy and energetic. Great food and people watching
Service was wonderful in this relaxed environment. Food was tasty,.. only one issue, the chowder was delivered to our table lukewarm and without a spoon, but the issue was fixed. Don’t sit outside if you’re u don’t want people walking through with lit cigarettes and dogs.
Great experience, best food!
It was okay-good but definitely over rated.
Chose this place as a birthday lunch for my girl because she loves oysters. The place was perfect and the best part was the surprise that happy hour provided $1 oysters. Also her getting to eat a childhood favorite uni. We totally enjoyed the experience and will become regulars.
Anniversary happy hour.
Waitress was so great. She brought us Champaign when we told her it was our anniversary.
I have been here several times as a local and have to say that each time the hostesses have been unfriendly and curt, quite unlike the wait staff. This is the first impression of an establishment and needs addressing. That said, the food is great.
Great cocktails and food
Wish there were some non seafood potions aside from the veggie sides
We celebrated three birthdays and were treated like queens! There are extremely gracious with any food allergy/restrictions. Truly, BEST restaurant in San Diego!!
The hostess was surly and annoyed at seating us ( I guess having a reservation doesn't mean they really want you there). as for the service, after taking our drink and appetizer order, the waitress disappeared for nearly the rest of our meal. We probably would have had a second drink if the option had been offered! The food runners were not working together, as our cold appetizer ( a nice chilled lobster) arrived seconds before our entrees. My husband asked them to please allow us to eat our appetizer first, and specified that our food should be cooked fresh. Nope, the same entrees cam out ten minutes later. What a sad, soggy crab cake and chewy, breaded fish and chips. Not sure why the rave reviews in San diego magazine. Just a super disappointing weekend outing.
Hands down one of my favorite restaurant in San Diego. The food always delivers. On this occasion, we had the octopus which was expertly cooked - the chorizo and sherry vinaigrette were the perfect pop of flavor with the octopus. We also had the BIG seafood platter which was divine and we indulged in the chowder fries which were decadently delicious. We had all of this alongside a gorgeous bottle of Albarino. This is a MUST visit restaurant whether you are from out of town or live here.
Here is the best seafood restaurant in San Diego.
Food was really good and they had great cocktails with funny glasses. Service was really good too! All waiters were very good.
Amazing atmosphere. Our waitress Amber was a star. The food was superb. Clam chowder, burrata heirloom tomato salad, scallops and fish and chips were all great. The ironside bread loaf with whipped butter was the perfect starter with a hint of citrus that was a welcomed twist. Will be coming back!
