il Barone Ristorante
*We've moved to 900 Bristol North St. in Newport Beach, come visit us at our new location!*
The Orange County Register’s Brad Johnson states; “Il Barone actually has a soul. The cooking is solid and precise, steeped in tradition and clearly weighted with heart and experience.”
Chef Francesco Barone has created a menu representative of his Italian heritage which emphasizes fresh high quality ingredients prepared with care and served in a modern and elegant atmosphere.
Pasta is all hand made in house and it shows. First rate and perfectly cooked. Menu is fairly traditional but all well executed. Top 3 or so Italian restaurants in OC
Fantastic restaurant - the gnocchi is like eating a cloud its so light. HUGE Recommend!!
It was wonderful the restaurant is doing the very best they can under the circumstances of no formal outside dining.
They are trying to make do just to survive. Like so many other restaurants this is just killing them.
Like so many restaurants, iL Barone is using outside seating only. I am a regular here and can tell you that this has in no way hampered the menu, service or quality. Food was, as usual, excellent!! Just love it here.
Only gave a 3 because ambience was outside. :)
Food was served outside due to COVID. Owner and staff were very appreciative for the community support. Food a little high priced but the quality of food is worth it. Italian food at it’s finest.
We love this restaurant. Food is unique and delicious, ambiance is beautiful and elegant. Bathrooms clean and fresh. Always greeted warmly and receive excellent service. A real find.
The best Italian food in Newport Beach. The staff are great, attentive and courteous. The place is clean and the owner, Donatella is always coming around to make sure you are felt welcomed. I love Il Barone's!
Everything was amazing!
Love this place! The specials were fantastic and the dessert is always worth every calorie!
Great food at an old favorite. Nice job with the face coverings; made us feel very safe and cared for.
Great food from an accomplished chef. Service very attentive without being intrusive.
It was very friendly and good service. It is difficult with the COVID protective gear but they were very safe, clean, and the food was delicious.
The restaurant had just opened a few days after restaurants were aloud to reopen. The food was delicious! Homemade! The server was great! I hope people start getting out and supporting .
Three of us ordered the Ciappino. It was literally inedible. The lobster was overcooked to the point that it couldn't be cut with a steak knife. The other fish was cooked with the skin on and the bones in. It was impossible to take a bite without getting a mouthful of bones, unless you ate with tweezers instead of flatware. And, even though all three dishes were inedible and sent back, they only took two of the dishes off the bill. So we paid $60 for one order of inedible Ciappino that we sent back. And, Ciappino is usually in the $30-40 per plate price range. For $60, it was at least 50%+ over market price, for a dish that was inedible. Try Michaels on Naples for Ciappino. It's quite good and costs less than $40. Il Barone took over the old Coco's location. It's a shame because the food at Coco's was actually better. I wouldn't go back to Il Barone if the food was free.
Love this restaurant ... the only bad thing is I have not been able to try many of their “staples”....as nearly every time we go there is an off menu “special” that begs to be tried ... as an example, a week or so ago they had a meatless lasagna with a cream sauce and black truffles that was one of the best things I’ve EVER eaten.
Went to il Barone for lunch. I had the lamb stew, and it is excellent. The only drawback was the cost. it would be great if il Barone had a lunch menu that was more reasonable.
Food was wonderful but the service was extremely slow - even though the restaurant was less than half full.
There were four of us who are rather demanding diners. One of us have hearing problem. Nevertheless, we could carry on a conversation with having to shout for the benefit of one of us. We all agreed that the food was excellent and reasonably priced. The menu offers excellent and diverse choice for our taste. The thin bread with cheese and prosciutto was unique and excellent. My sole was flavorful and not overcooked. My wife is usually picky on pasta but could not stop telling me how good her linguine vongole was compared to others she had recently. The other couple both had veal scaloppine and liked it. We all agreed that the meals were reasonably priced and hope that you would keep it that way so we can come back again. Best wishes,
Fresh Seasonal authentic Italian fare. Everything at this place is excellent. If it ever isn’t they make it right with a smile. This is why I go out to eat there are still little gems out there producing amazing quality without pomp and circumstance. The owner is the Chef and his wife works the front of house. Great people great food
I don't remember the name of my pasta entree, but it was lacking flavor. The waitress said the sausage in it was hot Italian sausage, but it wasn't the hot Italian sausage I buy to cook with - it wasn't "hot"....The limoncello dessert was yummy!
Food was great, courses take a bit, but understandably so since it was Valentine's night. There was a blunder from the kitchen and other server, but our server was transparent and apologized, which was nice. Kitchen definitely seemed understaffed though, especially on a busy night. Sat around 8:30, wasn't out of the restaurant until around 10:15, again it was a busy night, so I can understand that. Server and manager were very kind to give us another round of wine and a free limoncello for the blunder. Overall experience was a solid 4/5 stars, if the food was just a bit quicker, I would give it 5 stars easy.
We love this place, but Valentine’s Day was way too busy and a bit of a disaster
food was good
Went with my wife for Valentine’s Day. They had a preset menu which was not unexpected, however for the prices being charged the portions were small. The food tasted fantastic and that was the highlight of the evening
The service was abhorrent. It was a four course menu and we waited 40 minutes between our appetizer and salad course. During that 40 minutes we never once saw our waitress. After that wait she finally arrived and said “you haven’t gotten your salads yet?” Maybe if she had bothered to check in on us she would have seen the issue. We had barely started our salads when the entrees came so we had our salads and entrees together. We constantly had to ask for refills on drinks as well. Dessert was just ok.
For $200 for dinner for two, I expect commensurate service, not at all like we had.
We might try them again since the food was good, but such bad service will definitely give us pause in the future.
This review is specific to the Valentine’s Day dinner last Friday. We came in at 545 for an early reservation to avoid the crowds. We were seated across from the open kitchen. One of the waiters and the chef were arguing about the menu and we can heard profanity and let just said the experience was less than romantic at all. We asked to move to another table and the host was gracious enough to move us. There was no regular menu only pre fixed menu for Valentine’s, I wish I checked and verified ahead of time. My baked fish in a parchment paper was $85. Anyway, we usually had a great experience and really enjoyed the food. But we won’t be coming back for Valentine’s Day going forward.
Food was delicious, service was exceptional, and the waiter helped us pick the perfect wine. Overall great experience. Would definitely recommend.
Amazing food and service. Best Italian restaurant in Orange County.
We were in the area for an event. And, this place seemed like a reasonable place to have a ‘business dinner’. The wait staff was excellent. The food was good - more like ‘above average’. I always like going here - and it’s ‘sister restaurant’ in Laguna Beach. It’s where I go for my ‘Italian food fix’.
Everything great except place was very cold
Donna and staff did an excellent job of providing attentive but respectful service. The wine recommendation was the perfect compliment to our well prepared, delicious meal. The limoncelo desert was fabulous.
Six stars, really!
Great food and service.
Had a really great time
This is my husband's favorite restaurant. As a vegetarian, he loves all things pasta, and he thinks this place has the best. If we can't go to a steakhouse (my first choice), then I can be happy here eating fish, veal, chicken or beef. The salads are really delicious, too. Occasionally, they have homemade butter cake or creme brulee, and then my husband is really in heaven. Great wine list, as well. The place is beautiful and we enjoy the atmosphere very much. Highly recommend.
Service outstanding. Wine outstanding. Salad outstanding. Had the ribeye special and shared the home made pasta special with the table.
Desserts also outstanding.
Highly recommend for anyone in the OC area in need of a great Italian experience.
The welcoming by the owner herself Donatella
Makes you feel you are entering her home
The specials are so amazing
I had the Dover Sole SUPERB
My guest SSF ha di the Ossobuco loved it
Grazie Il Barone
Food very disappointing... Caesar salad good....fish , pasta and desserts were poor
Food was ok but nothing special... especially considering cost....$405 for 4
