Hunter Steakhouse - Oceanside
Not a great place to eat at. Older restaurant, tables were sticky, appetizers were cold inside of them, steak wasn't cooked properly and the restaurant smelled funny. We will not be back.
6 years ago my go to place went downhill thought we try again very impressed service and food will return
My wife had lobster that was very tough. She had a hard time cutting with a sharp knife. The one good thing was that it was taken off the bill. I had spare ribs that were very fatty. So you could say I would not rate the food very highly.
Been going here for Valentines Day with my parents for 45 years - very few times has it disappointed. This year the food & service were fantastic as usual, and the music selection was particularly good 🙂
Great service. Fun tableside salad bar. If you’re accustomed to scrutinizing big city dry aged steaks, this ain’t the place. Fun for a casual evening.
Everything was as expected except we wanted ribeyes and were steered away due to quality issue.
I had the porterhouse and it was good, my father in law and brother in law and son had the NY strip instead of the ribeye and those cuts were fine.
Waiter was really nice and checked in often.
We came here for our anniversary as my wife loved their grilled lamb chops when she used to live in the San Diego area. She had the lamb chops again and I had a Hunters cut filet. Both were excellent. If we are in the area again I’m sure we will be back.
Very old school steakhouse. Table side salad is always great !! My parents use to come here in the early 80’s so it was great to experience it as well. We can during restaurant-week. Great deals !! My husband and I will come again for sure.
Everything was terrific, staff was so so nice from check in to bus boy to waitress.
food was yummy, hadn't been here in years and years. Glad my hubby and I stopped in last week
great prime rib. Great table salad. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Best prime rib in North County! Great salads & dessert too!
Ordered salmon instead of steak this time - fabulous!
I was in a party of 8 for dinner on the January 20th at 6:00 PM. We did not leave the restaurant until 8:15. Although the server was pleasant and personable she seemed to have quite a few personal friends and spent quite a bit of time visiting with them. Since we had to wait so long before being waited on after seated, long time between courses and waiting for check it did irritate me.
I asked if you carried the Local Gold Medal Corn Based Venom Vodka and the server said you need not. The Company is local and they support a lot of Charities in the area. Please consider this product in the future.
Our waitress Jeanine was awsome. Good food will go again
Delicious food at a great value. The place is old and it shows a bit, BUT it goes a long way in providing atmosphere, what was very comfortable. Kind of like being in your own comfy dining room. I had the pork baby back ribs. Deeeeeeelicious!
Server was friendly and provided great service for how busy the restaurant was. The food was very good. The dinner portions were huge.
very reasonable and prime rib and lamb chops were delicious
The family was looking forward to spend Restaurant Week at the Hunter but one thing that bothered me that the price for the 3 course meal was $20 but I ordered some steak sauce which I thought came with the meal and was charged an additional $5 [that's 20% for the whole meal price] without the Waitress mentioning this to me at all..
A little disturbed.
The best Prime Rib. I ALWAYS stop here on my way back from Baja. A must stop for travelers.
We came for the steak, and were not disappointed. Each bite was rich, exactly as tender as the cut should be (top sirloin and new york strip are different), and the outside was seared to perfection.
As first time diners, we had read the reviews and were ready to eat! We started with the appetizer sampler...the calamari was outstanding!!! The potato skins and stuffed mushrooms were also tasty. This was followed by the table created salad (loved it) and the split pea soup (delish!). Our starters were all excellent, but the entree was a step down. I ordered the ribeye, medium...and it was basically well done. The sides of veggies and mashed potatoes were a bit bland and not something I would seek out again. I contemplated sending my steak back...but I didnt. I should know by now to order medium rare, then it will come out medium. My husband ordered the prime rib and a baked potato...both looked excellent and he enjoyed them. The creamy/spicy horseradish will take your breath away, but it is SO good. At this point, we were stuffed...but the dessert tray looked divine, so we ordered the lemon cake to go. It did not disappoint.
As for the service, our waitress was friendly, pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu. As for the atmosphere, it is exactly what you would expect an old steak house to be. Dark furniture and finishings, large fire places (lit with fires)...and basic things sporadically put on the wall. None of this bothered me, as it didnt affect the taste of my food...and I dont need fine furniture and wall decor, to improve my meal.
Despite the temp of my steak, I would go back. Bc even well done, the steak had an excellent flavor...and I need more calamari and cake :)
A place to have a good steak. I had Hunter cut prime rib. Excellent quality I had to ask for a box as it was huge. Service was quick and very friendly. Nice and cozy Christmasy atmosphere. Appetizers sampler was great. Prices are very reasonable.
We’ve dine at The Hunter many times and the food, as always, was wonderful! Our server was bubbly and cheerful but agonizingly SLOW! We waited over a half hour for her to take our order and she only had the 5 or 6 tables. Too chatty with customers she knew I guess. We would avoid her next time
The service is what caused my rating to be a 4-star instead of 5. The waitress was nice & polite, however not as attentive as we'd like, and we had to ask for the desert menu when she brought the bill, she never offered. Also, she never asked if we wanted crack pepper on our salad, which is a question they've always asked in the past. When we asked another server, he gave us the 2 foot pepper grinder to put it on ourselves and walked away.
We enjoyed Prime Rib on this visit to Hunter Steakhouse. Always love the Tableside Salad to start. Prime Rib was presented to our liking. Service was exceptional! Will return soon.
The food and service was excellent. We got there late because of traffic but our requested table was being held for us.
Hunter Steakhouse Oceanside was a huge disappointment. Service was slow (waiter said because of shift change) Food was great! Atmosphere looks good, but if you saw all the spiderwebs in the window, it makes you wonder. I ordered a $38 bottle of wine only to have it delivered with a twist off cap and she said all the wines were doing this (Kendal Jackson Chardonnay). Only one Chardonnay was more expensive. The reservation made asked if we were celebrating anything and I put our Anniversary, no one made mention of this.
This is our family's go to restaurant. It's has consistently good food, plenty of it, nice atmosphere, always great service. They offer a 4 course meal for only $22. If you go during the week they offer an early diner as well.
I would highly recommend this restaurant
Quiet little quaint restaurant with good service. Well worth the drive and a good price on Monday or Tuesday with their 4 course specials. We will be back, but we will order other main courses. We had prime rib and chicken, but both were tough and rubbery as if they were cooked in a microwave or under a heat lamp for far too long. Not impressed with the main meats, but everything else was delicious. Service was extremely good and very personable.
Great food and location to meet my out of town guests
Food was great. So was the service. Place could use a little cleanup inside but otherwise cant wait to go again.
the restaurant was recommended by my Resort, and my friends and I found it to be conveniently located ,the food was excellent, the service was excellent and it was very affordable!
Hunter’s Steach House is a fabulous plate to eat. We had hamburgers with French fries. They were both served as ordered. The service by all was at its best. Our server (Dena) I believe, had a good sense of humor which made it pleasant for us.
We will be back again for sure.
Last Restaurant week used tenderloin meat so tender delicious not this time; caesar salad and baked potato good but then again what can you get for $10 these days! The place needs a good cleaning and update please!
We were very disappointed at our last visit. We come here once a year when we are on vacation in Oceanside. Until this year I have always written very positive reviews. This year however, I was very disappointed in my meal. The crab stuffed mushrooms were excellent as usual as was the table side salad. I always get the stuffed sirloin (top sirloin stuffed and topped with mushrooms. My steak was so tough I couldn’t cut it which the waitress witnessed. She immediately asked if I wanted a new one. I said let me see how the rest of the steak is. Both my husband and I tried to cut through the steak and neither of us could. There was a layer of gristle on the bottom that was so tough it couldn’t be cut or chewed so I finally asked the waitress to take it back. She went back to the kitchen and they told her all the cuts were the same and the only thing they could do was fix the same thing with a filet. At this point I said fine. My husband was half way through his meal by the time my steak came out. My husband also had a top sirloin and his was fine. I know what a top sirloin cut is and I have never had a problem with this cut before so I am pretty sure it was just that one piece that was not good. To add insult they charged me for the price of the filet. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was with the way they handled this whole thing. The server however was a doll and handled the situation the best she could.
It was very good. The atmosphere was nice and the food was very good
This was our first time to Hunter Steakhouse and we had a very nice meal. Many reviews say that the interior needs to be renovated, but if you like rustic, cabin type décor then you will like it here. The service was good and very friendly. The food was very good, we all had steaks (filet, ribeye, sirloin) and they were all perfectly cooked. The salad at the table is great, if you like salad bars you'll love it, they fix it right at your table.
The restaurant was established in 1970 and hasn't changed in decades. It is a huge venue but was practically empty. We ordered calamari to share and the server forgot to bring it -- after we reminded her she did bring it and comped us for the dish. It was ok but nothing to write home about.
We both ordered steaks. They were cooked about right but not exciting. The wine was so-so. The salads weren't very special either -- iceberg lettuce and mediocre croutons. We skipped dessert.
You know what you're getting. Quality matches price. Love the idea that you don't pay for sides. The salad made at the table is huge, then the meal is more than sufficient. Dessert selection is very good with lots of options. Felt a bit rushed by everything being brought out so quickly however, you need to move those tables.
