Everything was perfect for brunch. Except for the crab was not cracked and difficult to eat. Needed to ask for utensils to eat crab.

We had impressed our friends with the ambiance, the service, and variety food. We would go to Hoku for brunch again!

My wife’s birthday in Hawaii: Stayed at the Kahala so very convenient. Hoku’s is a culinary experience and so elevated in all aspects. We both had the 4 course prix fix dinner. Each course was a visual delight and absolutely delicious in presentation and taste. The choices for each course were varied in offering. We were very pleased with our choices. After our dessert course the restaurant presented a personal touch to end my wife’s birthday experience.

The restaurant was so cold I had to leave early. We asked the hostess if they could turn down the continuous blasting AC and she said no. Couldn’t even enjoy my meal. Take a winter coat if you dine there. Such a waste in beautiful Hawaii weather.

Hoku’s made our Thanksgiving celebration truly wonderful. Each course was an innovative take on traditional holiday flavors and ingredients.
From a perfect Whiskey cocktail to start, and an ideal wine recommendation, the staff attended to our every need with personal service.
The main course of Tur-Duck-En was the highlight. Each bird was cooked perfectly and combined to make an unforgettable entree.

Went to celebrate our anniversary at Hoku's Sunday Brunch. It's teishoku style - or "TeiHoku" style - and I didn't understand what that meant. In lieu of a buffet like they had in the past, you get a serving of everything that is on the menu. Honestly, we were full after the appetizers, which included Hoku's famous fried poke musubi, sushi, sashimi, and the yummiest pancakes, but we couldn't pass up the main dishes! Our favorites were the miso butterfish and salmon benedict on a cheese biscuit. The roast beef and tempura were delicious as well. Was only slightly disappointed with the king crab because the pieces were small and hard to eat (the shell was cut open but still difficult to get off because it was hard and pokey). The service was excellent and helped to make it a very lovely anniversary celebration!

Aloha! Mahalo for choosing to visit The Kahala. Appreciate you explaining our TeiHoku brunch style. We believe this style of presentation provides better service and ambiance while still offering the variety (and quantity) of offerings our guests have come to expect and love about Hoku's. Thank you for sharing and we hope to welcome you back again!

They currently are offering only a Prix Fixe menu. Either 4-course or 8-course. The overall experience was good. The ambiance was nice, the service very good and the food nice. Of course the food is the most important thing and I would consider the food consistently good across the board, but not what I would define as amazing. The drinks are also good and the value for money is fair (considering the upper end price point). Hoku's is a good "special occasion" spot or date night to impress. We enjoyed our dining experience at Hoku's.

I concluded my 2021 stay at The Kahala with brunch at Hoku’s. Funny, I tried to get a reservation at PBH but there was nothing timely and the Grand Breakfast (room service) looked less appealing at a similar cost. I heard from several people that they didn't like the new brunch format; saying there wasn’t enough food. Uh, unless you have a humongous appetite, there is ample food to satisfy almost anyone.

I started with a glass of Nicolas Feuillatte brut; a nice, crisp Champagne. They serve the dishes in three movements; it’s a symphony of treats to delight one’s palate served a la TeiHoku.

Plate 1 (Starters) consisted of assorted sashimi (ahi, Hamachi, salmon), sushi (California roll, ahi and Hamachi nigiri), 3 pieces of shrimp cocktail, half a lobster tail, half of their famous ahi poke musubi and two thin pancakes (crepes) in a butter / maple sauce. The highlight for me was the ahi poke musubi … it was crunchy on the exterior; I’ve ordered this many times and this one was the best ever.

Plate 2 (Mains) consisted of a Baked Salmon Cheddar Benedict, Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, 4oz of steamed King Crab legs, a petite portion of Misoyaki Butterfish, 2 pieces of crispy bacon, and 4 slices of rib roast. I went to Hoku’s vowing to finish all of the food but I had to tap out with 2 pieces of rib roast, the vegetable tempura and the rice remaining. The crab legs were pre-cracked but I used my fingers to break open all of the shells to extract every last morsel of crab. Sorry, my water glass was my finger dipping bowl.

Plate 3 (Dessert) was boxed for me and I had a nice cup of coffee and a glass of the Banyuls dessert red that I missed out two days earlier.

The TeiHoku brunch is worth every penny; it’s artfully presented and delicious. But, what is the best feature of Hoku’s? It’s their staff; nowhere else have I encountered such personable yet consummately professional people. Juliette is a gem! But, it’s all of the people at Hoku’s. Highly recommended!

I spent my birthday weekend relaxing at this fabulous hotel; dining alone I ordered the Grand Tasting Menu, 8 courses for $200 with the wine pairing ($80).

I was seated at a table by the windows and I had the restaurant to myself. Juliette was wonderful; attentive and knowledgeable. Bread and an ahi aioli spread arrived first.

An amuse bouche came; it was a shot of vichyssoise and a crystal ball. It was an interesting start, more art that food. Course 1 was a tartare of Hawaiian Big Eye tuna with Regiis Ova caviar atop a bonito gelee. It was served with Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne. This was what I was expecting from a grand tasting menu.

Course 2: Oprah Farms beets salad. I would characterize it as goat cheese with cubed beets, cucumbers and a chiffonade of shiso leaves, served with a Marc Bredif Vouvray (Loire Valley). This wine was the highlight of the wines for me.

Course 3 was the star of the evening (IMO), Sweet White Hawaiian Canoe Potato Agnolotti with palula and black Perigord winter truffles, served with a Neyers Chardonnay. The sauce was spectacular; I used bread to sop up every drop.

Course 4: Confit of Kona Kahala; this came with hearts of palm, in a puree of green apples and Hass avocados, paired with a Pierre Spar Brut Rose (Crement D’Alsace). Again, the fish was soft and succulent but the sauce was the star.

Course 5: Lobster Luau Stew. I wouldn’t call it a stew; it was poached Keahole lobster atop creamed leeks and taro leaves with crispy shallots on top. It was paired with a red wine.

Course 6: Snake River Farms “dry aged” beef ribeye, with braised endive and a Gruyere cheese pain perdu, paired with a Chateau Tournefeuille (Lalande-Pomerol).

Course 7: Pavlova, a lilikoi granite with crispy meringue. I ordered coffee and asked Juliette to box course eight. I could not eat any more so I missed out on the Banyuls, Domaine La La Tour Vielle wine.

In summary, while expensive, this is the finest meal I’ve had in 2021 and well worth the cost.
