Dine on French cuisine at Hexagone. Its classy, yet casual setting features clothed tables and warm lighting. Hexagone serves a variety of flavorful dishes. Waitress was friendly enough but only when she brought the check did she apologize for the poor service "we were short handed tonite" why wait til now to tell us?? Food that was ordered was n o t as described on menu. "sorry" she said. No one ever came round to check on the water refill which we had to beg for. Nor to check if food was to our liking.
It was expensive and not worthy of a return visit.
First time to this French restaurant. I had the tomato mozzarella salad and beef bourguignon. The food was very good, but I think a bit overpriced for what you got. The beef was very tender and flavorful, about 4 small pieces of it served with a small mound of mashed potatoes, about 3-4 Brussel sprout halves, and about 3-4 pieces of carrot. Nicely presented, but I think kind of pricey at $25 for 4 small pieces of beef. The tomato salad was $14ish. It had two small slices of mozzarella, two slices of Roma tomato, chopped basil on top, and a small mound of salad greens. I think $14 for two pieces of mozzarella is a little pricey. But perhaps that's to be expected at a French restaurant. Waiter was attentive and nice.
My husband and I had a delicious dinner. I had halibut and lobster. Our service was very attentive.
Sunday night only 3 servers who had trouble keeping up. Poor people next to us who were there before us and only getting served as we left. Need to leave a pitcher of water on each table as that always seems to be an issue.
Top sirloin was so tender that it hardly needed a knife, and the bernaise sauce was also outstanding. Short ribs had a great flavorful sauce and were cooked to perfection.
The asparagus bisque was smooth and velvety.
As usual, the food was outstanding. However, the service was slow and inattentive. After being seated, it was 15-20 minutes until someone approached the table. In the meantime, the patrons at the table next to us arrived after we did; they were greeted and received water, cocktails, and bread before we were even approached. After that, it continued to be very slow and basically inattentive. Also, later in the evening there were numerous long noises coming from behind the wall that sounded like someone stacking tables - at times it was almost hard to communicate. We will go back, but hopefully the service is better the next time. As an FYI, the first time that we went several years ago we had the best server that one can imagine - he was outstanding and fitting for the restaurant.

A below average Valentine's Day dinner at Hexagone. Service was average. My date and I were crammed into a wobbly table. Food was below average, not worth the price. Definitely would not go back to this establishment .
Our order was taken, the wine didn't arrive until after the salad course and then only we we asked for it. An assistant waiter brought our entrees before the salad plates were removed and even then we were the ones to move them. The bechemel was missing from my husband's steak and when I asked for it, it arrived congealed. Only after we had finished dinner did our waiter ask how our dinner was.
Needless to say we will never eat at Hexagone again.
Probably better for dinner. Lunch menu was small and food was okay nothing exciting.
We have eaten at Hexagon many times and always enjoy it. Happy hour is also nice.

Terrible, owner shouldn't be in the restaurant business. When we provided helpful criticism, he became so belligerent that the four of us couldn't believe so we walked out. My 2nd and my friends 6-8th, never again.
The worst dinning experience !
We had to Waite for 25 minutes to be seated by a waiter after begging him and telling him that we had a reservation and was pressed for time also . Three people before us had the same problem
He changed the table ( large ) to a small table while we were sitting
Bread was old and the lights above us were flickering each time someone passed a hall way to the lichen
We were never asked if we wanted wine ! Or a drink
We asked for menu 3 times
We had to grab him and order wine ( needed by then )

Headed here with my mom for a nice evening dinner. This place has a nice air about it from the street, but that image soon gets shattered upon coming inside. I found the staff rude and rushed throughout the visit. I saw someone in charge berating staff. The dining room is very tight, and navigating to tables feels like climbing.
The wines by the glass - I had the Pinot and Cab - were so-so. They seemed to have been left a bit too long in an open bottle. The food is good, but just that. I had the Beef Bourguignon, which was served with green beans and carrots. It was well cooked, but the vegetables were undercooked. The creme brulee was the best part of the meal.
I have only had dinner at Hexagon but it's my 4th time. I'm from Sacramento but always make time to go to Hexagon when I'm in San Diego. It's quiet, which I appreciate, and the food is french, which I love. It's a great spot for a romantic dinner and is a beautiful restaurant.
The service at Hexagon is all over the place. My last dinner there the waitress was, at best, indifferent. And it was a slow night! But other times we've had great service. The food is consistent, however. This is a restaurant where you can talk to your partner or a large group. It's a calm space. And there's parking.
We had a dinner for a group of 10 at Hexagone and the evening was wonderful. It was during San Diego Restaurant Week so we ordered off the prix menu. The food was excellent. Everyone loved their meals.
We went here for a late lunch during Restaurant Week. I had the sea bass with canoise sauce which was very good. My partner had coq au vin which was also very good. My partner is French so was hoping for a more original menu than steak frites and coq au vin but it was still good. I will say the mashed potatoes were delicious and the carrots and beans that came with the fish were also very tasty.
To give just a few examples... We waited 20 minutes after our reservation time to be seated and this was never acknowledged by staff. There was a mistake with one of our dishes and also not acknowledged when brought up to the server. We were brushed off by another server when trying to ask for silverware for the food that had been served. Overall sub-par service and mediocre food. I will assume that this was due to a busy night during restaurant week. Regardless, a very disappointing first experience for $120 bill. Will not be going back.
We had a 7:30 reservation but did not get seated till 8. The restaurant was short staffed and the bartender had to serve us. He was very good and enjoyed his service, but he was distracted with trying to tend bar and serve us.
I went here with a friend for restaurant week and really enjoyed my experience. We ended up sitting at the bar, and the bartender had awesome customer service. He was easy to get along with and I would definitely be back.
What was amazing here was the sauces on anything. I guess it wouldn't be a true French restaurant if it wasn't all about the sauce. I had a scallop which seemed a little underdone, but I didn't mind. The sauce was creamy and matched well. The sea bass had a mediterranean sauce that matched it well. Portion was a little smaller than my dining partners who had lamb and beef tenderloin. In each entree the sauce was definitely the star. For dessert the profiteroles and crepes suzette were very well done where again the sauce on the crepes was the star. The only concern in the beginning was our server. He didn't great us or explain any items to us - was very flat in personality. It wasn't until we kept joking and laughing out loud did he warm up to us. But my dining partners and I have a knack for that. Then it became a very pleasant evening after all. Maybe the crowd they normally receive doesn't appreciate candor with their waitstaff, but I do because that is who always knows what is good and best in house.
My husband and I went to Hexagone on the first night of San Diego's Restaurant Week. It took about 5 minutes for us to be noticed by anyone and just under 10 minutes for us to get seated. We figured they weren't prepared for a Restaurant Week surge as the restaurant was mostly full (this was a Sunday before MLK Day so I assume a lot of people had off). Once we were seated, we asked about using a $50 dining cheque from Open Table and they denied that because it was Restaurant Week. We tried ordering two different bottles that weren't available, so we both went with separate glasses of wine. I had the lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and chocolate bombe. The bisque was flavorful and I loved dipping their baguette into it. The beef was cooked *perfectly* with an amazing side of stewed veggies. My husband had the lamb and he adored it. He also got the scallop (singular; there was only one) in a delicious saffron sauce and that dish was delicious. He enjoyed his crepe Suzette too. I'd really love to see their service improve a bit because the food was really lovely and its in a great part of San Diego.
Hexagone's restaurant week dinner menu was excellent. I had the duck, my friend had the lamb, both were delicious. The desert was great too. The only downside was the service was a little lacking. I don't want a waiter that hovers but our waiter didn't keep our water glasses filled, and we were drinking wine so we weren't going through the water that fast. He also never brought us bread plates, which was irritating. He was nice enough but I certainly would have tipped more than the standard % if he'd been more attentive.
We frequently dine at the Hexagon restaurant with friends, family and by ourselves for special musicians, singers and dinner specials. We just celebrated my sons birthday there and he absolutely loved it. He and his wife were very impressed with the menu, food, service and ambiance. We refer all of our friends to the Hexagon for great French cuisine. We highly recommend it.
I have eaten at Hexagone many times because the food is consistently good and moderately priced. On New Year's Eve there was a special menu but the only thing special about it was the special prices. The menu items were the same as usual but the prices were more. I guess that is to be expected.
Service was terrible. Had to ask for a drink...was brought flat club soda...and took 15 minutes to get a refill...also flat. Birthday celebration was a candle in an empty wine glass...rather pathetic considering our bill was $350. Food was tasty...only redeeming factor.
We received recommendations from friends for nearby Mister As but elected to try Hexagone instead for the prospect of getting a comparably high quality French cuisine at an approachable price. We were not to be disappointed. The food was phenomenal, the service stellar and the ambience was just perfect too. Very nice and romantic setting for my wife and I to enjoy a great meal. I would very much recommend Hexagone.
Had the short ribs and sea base off the Christmas Day menu. Atmosphere was warm and inviting. Service was good and food competently prepared.
Truly one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The owner was rude and confrontational - he told me and my dining companion we should be thankful for being open on Christmas - the service was horrible - no fork, not being warned about hot plates, no f/u - but the food wasn't bad.
I overheard an employee saying they don't expect the restaurant to be open come January. I'm not at all surprised.
Over-priced microwaved food; truly awful. I had the pan-roasted sea bass with ratatouille. The fish was so over-cooked, the texture resembled more of a tough chicken than sea bass. This was served with a glop of mashed potatoes and about a tablespoon of what I think was canned ratatouille. I think there were a few string beans.
The service was friendly, if untrained and awkward.
I seldom write negative reviews. I was in the restaurant business myself, and generally prefer to give negative feedback directly to the restaurant. But this was so bad, I don't think that feedback would be helpful.
We invited friends to dine with us at Hexagone on Christmas Eve. The restaurant was packed and there were not enough waiters to attend to all the tables. We had to wait a long time before a waiter showed up to take our order. We had to ask for bread, which was brought automatically to other tables. We had to ask for a fork so that one of our guests could eat the food that was finally brought to our table. We kept trying to flag down waiters in the hope that we could get someone's attention. Our waiter seemed to vanish into thin air for long periods of time. We got dessert menus, but no one ever showed up to take our order for dessert. We finally succeeded in getting our waiter to come to the table so that we could pay the check and leave. The food was alright. I ordered the "Traditional Christmas Dinner"-- turkey with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. They substituted sauerkraut for cranberry sauce with no explanation. This restaurant is poorly managed. More waiters need to be hired.
Limited wine list, and the vintages were not displayed on the menu. The waiter was notably irritated when we asked him to check the vintages on a few of the wines before we ordered. The duck was very salty, but the rack of lamb was excellent. The waiter was not very friendly, and no one greeted us as we entered the restaurant. We had to wait quite a while to be acknowledged. We did not feel welcomed.
Been here a dozen times or more. Always excellent value for classic French cuisine. On this occasion we tried the Tarte Tatin and found it to be overdone, not constructed well and not to our liking.
Otherwise, as usual really good food and reasonably priced wines. Will be back.

I've been to Hexagone several times over the last couple of years, and have never had a bad meal. This is actually my preferred restaurant for steak - even though they serve nominally French cuisine, their T-bones and beef bourguignon are fantastic.
Their beer list needs help - there's really no excuse for having a bad beer selection in San Diego; their offerings are always strange, and rarely match what's listed on the menu.
I was greeted immediately upon entry and given a prime table even though I was dining alone. Holiday decorations were charming and not overdone and added even more romance to this charming restaraunt. David was a very attentive waiter and made sure I enjoyed a very relaxed and unhurried dinner. I can't say enough good things about the food and beverages. The pours on the alcohol and wine were very generous. For dinner the lamb shank with white bean
cassoulet was devine! The lamb fell from the bone and was so moist and tender. I do not eat sweets but the chef was kind enough to put together a fresh fruit medley for me to enjoy. Special occasions, romantic dinner or when you just want to have a great meal, you can't beat Hexagon!
A good French restaurant on Bankers Hill. The quiet, and the availability of parking, are pluses. The boeuf Bourguignon is outstanding
