About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Good for groups
A timeless, sought-after dining escape, celebrated Chef Brian Malarkey opened Herb & Wood to instant acclaim over four years ago. In that time, the restaurant has become an icon, a dining destination that has helped to propel San Diego's culinary reputation to new heights. By focusing on rustic, wood-fired dishes, Chef Malarkey's menu elevates humble ingredients such as carrots, beets, and chicken, incorporating Mediterranean flavors and a California ethos of seasonality and sustainability.

Why they're an Icon

    MICHELIN Plate2022

From the OpenTable editors: Spectacular wood-fired mains and a strong cocktail game are the twin draws at this sceney Cali-Mediterranean restaurant. Owner and Top Chef finalist Brian Malarkey created a place that’s just as charismatic as his on-air persona, complete with candlelit tables, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and modern art on the walls.

It's a shame. The service was a disappointment. The restaurant is loud. But our waitress did not slow down enough to hear us properly. I'm not sure if they were short staffed but she was sprinting the entire night. When asked about one dish she answered about a different dish. When we clarified she thought we ordered both. Fine no big we'll take the extra appetizer. Both the scallop crudo and the hamachi crudo were lovely. The watermelon tequila cocktail was spot on. The dutch potatoes and mushrooms were both outstanding. My husband's tuna entre was also excellent. I asked for a red wine suggestion to go with my pansotti. I enjoy wine and finding new favorites at restaurants. The Pinot noir recommended was a nice wine on its own but did not pair well with the mushrooms or the pansotti. It was okay with the potatoes but not great. That's a pet peeve of mine when it's the most expensive glass. The pansotti was the only food disappointment. It was on the salty side, rich and heavy. I could not taste any mint or basil. I think there were 3 spring peas. It wasn't bad just did not match the expectation from the description. Everything else was bold, bright and flavorful. This just didn't measure up to the rest of the meal. I did not eat half of it and there was no inquiry on why.

Fantastic service! Phenomenal food! Beautiful place! We loved our whole experience. Glad to sit in under the sky light and not in the main room bc it was much louder in there.
