Helen's
One of the best times at Helen's for us.
Zsa Zsa was back -so good to see her!
We will be back soon!
Always lovely at Helen's.
Excellent food our waiter was very polite and efficient knew the answers to our questions the food was Excellent My only issue was for the size of the building the music was just a little loud definitely would come back again
Had the roasted broccoli and cauliflower appetizer (mostly cauliflower), chicken entree and cannoli for dessert! Everything was delicious
I have a bunch of food allergies and they accommodated me. The food was amazing! Everything was well prepared and thoughtful. There were so many flavor surprises in the dishes. I love all the fresh herbs and spices they used. I wish I had gone there sooner. Definitely worth going to!!
Entree's were great but stay away from the dessert.
We had an amazing relaxing dinner. No rush, delicious food an amazing ambience
Best duck breast ever. Food is truly top drawer. Wait staff distracted and food a little slow. Still finished in time for our event
It had been a number of years since my wife and I had been to Helen’s. Took her there for Valentines Day. Food was excellent, service was top notch, and we won’t wait so long to go back!
Loved the quaint setting and long history of restaurant. The food was delicious, and we both enjoyed the things we ordered. With all the new, trendy restaurants in Richmond it's good to know that the old favorites are still holding their own.
Helen's is our favorite restaurant for many years.
Great food at a fair price - Helens has long been a standout in the Fan! One of the best Hanger Steaks in Richmond
Service was good. Took quite a while to get the food and it wasn't crowded. It was very dark and some of the music was distracting.
Make a reservation. We had a reservation and a few minutes early arriving, no problem we sat at the bar and enjoyed a drink. 30 min after a reservation time, we questioned the hostess and then promptly seated. They took our dinner order immediately and we waited, waited and waited. More than an hour later, we again questioned the staff about 20 min later we received our dinner. The food was very good. Not sure what happened but they did try to make it right by comping our bar tab and dessert.
Great food, good service, good location. There's a reason Helen's has been around since the depression. The menu and staff seem strangely relevant and new age, juxtaposing the history that follows the restaurant.
Really nice spot - friendly staff - good service - fantastic food. Cute old school booths at the back. Nice selection of small plates, entrees and specials, staff happy to recommend. Best pork belly I’ve ever tasted!
Helen's is always our "go to" for a great dinner out with friends. The menu is so manageable, with limited, but impressive choices. Our server was just terrific in her recommendations - the Hanger steak and roasted cauliflower is a must. Wine selection was very nice.
Absolutely a great place, food is so good and a really nice atmosphere. Parking can be tricky, but well worth the effort. Great experience and good!
When I was young Helen's was a more down home diner style restaurant with a backyard that had lights strung across the backyard, and owners who lived upstairs. Now, it is still a local restaurant but with a more upscale dining experience. The food is unique and changes seasonally to match available fresh ingredients. My dining companion and I shared the beet & plums salad which was unique and yummy. Then, for dinner we ordered shrimp & grits and bone in pork chop. Each dish was well prepared with those seasonal fresh ingredients. Wonderfully flavor full. For desert we again shared, but this time couldn't decide so ordered two which were nicely presented and delicious. Prices are reflective of the ingredients used.
We come to Helen’s for our anniversary every year and we’ve never been disappointed. The food is fabulous, the service personable and prompt and the atmosphere is perfect for an intimate occasion. We will certainly continue this tradition.
You can't get a better made to order dinner in an open kitchen like Helen's. Her longevity will remain eternal.
Excellent service and food. Mussels are the best.
Delightful and unique evening.
We arrived 5 minutes early to our 8:15 reservation on a Wednesday night. It was 7 minutes and three staff walking by us, before even acknowledging we were there or asking if we had a reservation. Once we were greeted, staff said it would be a moment while they clean a table. We then watched said staff go to the bar and make drinks, then go to the kitchen and reappear finally and clean the table.
Lastly, the food was subpar from the three previous times we’ve eaten at Helen’s in the last year. The burger was over cooked, tasted bland, and appeared to have been a pre-frozen patty. Previous times eating the burger it seemed hand made. The bun was also dry and very low quality.
Talking with friends who were also dining there at the same time under a separate reservation, they also were disappointed with their dining experience.
Can't believe it's taken me so long to get into this Richmond classic. Had dinner here with a buddy last week, which included a bangin' duck breast. Vibe in this place is terrific, service is professional and friendly, the kitchen is right-there, so the aromas of all of the goodies being prepared perfumes the air.
My duck breast was perfection. Accompaniments were roasted cauliflower, quinoa, some lovely sliced (I think?) beets that were slightly pickled, a few slivers of fingerling, and a rich, dark compote-ish sauce (on the side) that was the perfect foil for the duck.
Perfect martini craft, too. And a good selection of wines by the glass. Languedoc pinot noir that I had with my duck was a perfect match..
Definitely putting this on the go-to list.
This time of year, Helen’s is the best!! Very festive- decorations galore!
From our last time there food and service and environment were 10 times better. Hope it stays that way !!
Loved the atmosphere. The appetizer, beet salad, was perfect. My partner liked his entree, duck breast. I also liked mine, rockfish, but I felt there was way too many elements which overpowered the fish. There was just too much going on and after the first couple of bites the taste was muddled. But I am more than willing to give it another try next time we are in a Richmond. We were greeted warmly and made to feel right at home plus it was a short walk to our Airbnb.
Eclectic atmosphere, tasty and unusual dishes, extremely helpful staff. Enjoyable experience!
We had a table for 6 and the food was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their meal.
We asked if we could be served quickly since we had tickets to a show and they took care of us.
As always everything was fantastic. Chef Cay and his team amaze us every time. They always deliver on perfection! Love Helens!
Avoid this restaurant the food was over priced and average at best
We waited for over 45 minutes for our food and the duck was cold
The actual menu is much more limited to the one on open table
Great atmosphere, service and the food was fantastic. Small place though they don’t crowd the tables - we had plenty of room.
Mussels were amazing. Don’t think twice about ordering them as an app.
Awesome food. Service was rather slow.
Our overall experience was very good. The mussels were awesome! Very cool niche restaurant. The entree selections are limited relative to other restaurants. However, you all the bases are covered.
arrived early one of four items on menu already sold out, cocktails very good, discovered new beer for me-Hardywood Single. Muscles and salad very good. Duck under cooked, fish over cooked. Menu said rockfish, tab said halibut, leads to what the fish really was under vegetables.
We went to Helen's for my girlfriend's birthday. We had never been before. Our table was in the back corner and very private, which we liked. It was romantic. We split a couple of small plates, pork belly and beets with plums, and one entree, shrimp and grits. Our meal was absolutely delicious. The pork belly is so flavorful and the beets were orange and wonderful. The shrimp came with grits made with gouda, I think, and a gravy type sauce that added flavor to a dish that is often bland. I am sincere when I say that the food is exquisite in preparation and taste. We will certainly be returning.
We used to frequent Helen's often when we lived in the neighborhood. This was our first time back in years and they did not disappoint! The food is always amazing, service was great, the atmosphere is quiet and dark. It's the perfect date night!
The chef here, Clay, understands food and how to concoct the perfect dish that hits the mark every time. If you are weary of uninteresting food and pretentious foam Helen’s will satisfy your craving for true gourmet fare. Every friend we have taken here has become a fan.
Helens is amazing everytime! Its my favorite resturant.
