Heck's was really convenient since we were staying at Devil's Thumb Resort. The host that sat us was abrupt, but our waiter made up for that. They food was really sub-par. Wilted kale and lettuce in our salads. Very disappointing. I have stayed at Devil's Thumb before and I remember the food being really good. Looks like there is a lot of room for improvement.
This was a special treat. Treat yourself when you get a chance
We were greeted immediately, and the hostess was incredibly helpful with our group seating requests. The waitress was friendly, and very willing to help. The food was delicious. The servings were a little small for the price, but the taste was amazing.
Fabulous. Love Heck’s
We live down the road and truly love it there. It is a little pricey but well worth it. We love that the menu changes every 3 months but noticed that a few standard items are kept on the menu which is smart. Highly recommend!
We had the best server in the place and the food was fantastic.
Food was great, ambiance was very nice. All around a great experience
We have been many times but this time service was not what we have come to expect. It took 20mins for anyone to come to the table to say hi and bring water. Food took almost 45mins to come out and I had to go find a spoon for our chili because no one was around. The bill had to be corrected twice. I hope this was an anomaly.
The quality, quantity of the food is deminishing..... Was charged a different price for wine than menu stated. The last three visits we requested a high top and initially were given a regular table. On the last visit, Hecks ran out of bread ???? How could this happen with a 7 day a week restaurant... After speaking with two different shift mannagers as to the issues, no action on customer service was given/issued.
Our party enjoyed our meal at Hecks quite a bit. There was a fairly significant delay from the time we received our appetizers to the time we received our meal but I would assume that was because they do cook those delicious waygu burgers to order.
The food was great. The 18 oz bone in Ribeye was one of the best I’ve ever had. The drinks were also amazing. The service was not great. We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation time and our waiter seemed put out we were there.
Food was amazing, excellent service. Really appreciated how they took care of us.
Appetizer didn’t come out, food came out and we asked for the appetizer. Our food went back under the warming lambs while we had the appetizer. Slow service. Nice ambiance.
Very unique place. Service was great David our waiter was very attentive. we were celebrating a special occasion View of the Meadow was stunning with the Alpenglow
Love the views, love the ambience, love the food! With that said, the service is pretty slow and sub par. Waiters are friendly and nice, just slow and don’t come back for long periods of time.
The service here has improved greatly but the menu, winter comfort food, is uninspired and the food is average. The ambiance, however, is wonderful and we will continue to dine here. What was one of the best restaurants in Grand County is not performing at its best.
Very pricey but as a one time experience it will be worth it. Be sure to make reservations regardless of the day or time. Drop off any guests you may have with you at the main Lodge's entry and then go to the parking lot just below and to the East. If you're all in hood shape, then the walk up from the parking lot is a nice and beautiful one during the daylight hours.
Upon recommendation and based on good reviews, I took my family for dinner at Heck's on Feb 18th. We drove from Winter Park. The place is cozy, rustic, with great history and offers locally grown beef. Burgers were all right, nothing spectacular, salad was wilted, but kids really enjoyed the dinner. All was good until we left the restaurant and I accidentally forgot my purse on the chair. My fault. When I realized this half an hour later, I started calling the resort. The front desk lady went to the restaurant to fetch my purse and it took her a while to locate it. When my husband returned to pick it up, it was obvious smb went through it and all cash was gone. My fault. Can't blame anyone. At least my ID was there. I called the resort manager the next morning to warn him. He said they'd conduct the investigation and call back. Nobody called. So, watch your belongings - I guess staff does not hesitate to raid them :-(
The beauty and ambiance of Heck’s is fantastic and the food and service rivals the ambiance. Everyone’s meal was excellent and the berry cobbler is to die for.
Had the Valentine's Day menu and selected the steak entree. Big mistake. Extremely tough. A shame since the first and third courses were to die for. Service and ambiance were super. Stephanie was an outstanding waiter.
Heck’s is a nice restaurant but the inexperienced wait staff were inefficient and with both the appetizer and dessert failed to bring plates or utensils to our table (I had to get up twice and search them out). Additionally my wife’s main course was just flat out cold, as a result of them not getting it out to us once cooked. Great ambience but mediocre service and food.
We have been coming here for years.
This time we were disappointed that they drastically changed the menu yet again AND hiked the prices again. CHECK the menu on their webpage before you go!
We ended up with the Wagu burger which was good, but all of the other entrees were too exotic or had odd ingredient combinations. We had a TINY iceberg wedge salad, that frankly, we could have easily made at home for way less than 12 and it would have been better.
Kid's meal selections have changed, again and what used to be 2 kids slider hamburgers for 10, is now 1 little hamburger for 12. Even though the place was not at all crowded when we ate there, it was like the waiters wanted us to leave constantly pestering us about taking away plates.
I think we will just go to Deno's next time.
Family vacation and my husbands birthday
This was our first experience at Devil's Thumb and it didn't disappoint. Heck's Tavern has the best ambiance and was perfect for unwinding after a day of cross country skiing. My Husband had a Wagyu burger and it was a little dry and from my understanding, that is not the norm here. Everything else - the tomato basil soup, smoked turkey sandwich, and the drinks were above par. Definitley a great place to visit.
Love the Wagu burgers. Excellent food. Service was very good. I deducted a star because they were out of several of the beers we wanted.
Wonderful atmosphere, great food and service. We will definitely be back.
Heck’s is way over priced. I paid $6.00 for a half-filled tiny cup of soup and $25.00 for a burger. Wine also way over-priced!
Exceptional is all I can say about Hex's and the service we received... We will be back!
Love DT and visit frequently. our group was seated in the library which is nice and quiet but we missed the restaurant vibe and the views. Wish they would have asked when I made the reservation, but the food and service was awesome nonetheless.
Our waiter was knowledgable, personable, professional. The restaurant knew it was an anniversary celebration. We each got a free glass of Prosecco. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was serene and quiet. A large evergreen tree outside our window was decorated with dozens of holiday multi colored lights. It was a wonderful evening all around.
All was excellent as usual except for the timing of our meal service. Our appetizers and salads/soup arrived at the same time and our dinner arrived before we finished those. It was as if they were rushing us through (6 top) to free the kitchen for 2 large groups that sat before and after us. Never had that experience at this venue before.
Sometimes the food here can be just OK. It IS overpriced... no matter what. But, on this occasion, the food was quite good and all were happy.
Everything was perfect. The guys had the chicken fried steak it was amazing. Loved everything about this place.
We have eaten at Heck's many times and have always enjoyed it. This time the food was okay but not great. The service was not up to normal standards ... had to ask for plates, water, waited a long time for a dessert, etc. The manager came by late into our meal and asked if we had any questions for him. He did not ask how our food was or the service.
The setting is still awesome .. fireplaces, wood, stone walls, etc.
Would recommend for the setting, however the food and service was not outstanding.
My meal (Greens and Grains) was entirely too salty. I mentioned it when the waiter first asked about how are meals tasted, and he merely said “I’ll let the chef know.” At the end of the meal when he asked if I wanted to take my leftovers (well over half the dish) home, I realize now I should have re-mentioned and even complained about the saltiness, but I just said “No thank you”. Still you’d think the waiter would have asked if I hadn’t liked my meal. I do wish I’d complained more explicitly because I don’t think I should have paid for that dish.
My companion’s Wagyu burger was evidently very good.
Been here a number of times and food usually good. Chicken fried steak tough and over cooked—clearly didn’t know how to cook CFS. Soup appetizer was lukewarm on a good day.
Service was sporadic and then all of a sudden the server decided to try and take my plate from me before I was done...didn't even ask first. The server also appeared to either be really hung over or high....
The food is good but in my opinion could be better considering the atmosphere and who they advertise themselves to be... it would also be nice if they had more vegetarian options for the vegetarian friend crowd!
The food at this restaurant was excellent, but the service was extremely rushed. My entree was served before I had even finished my salad and the server offered to bring the kids' ice cream while they were still eating their main course! The staff were constantly circling with clipboards to see what course we were eating. Clearly the restaurant had booked their tables too close together time-wise, and it was unfortunately too fast to even enjoy the delicious food. Very disappointing dining experience for what we were expecting!
Christmas week was understaffed and it took 25 mins to get service after we were seated. Make sure you go to correct restaurant on Open Table, there was confusion about our reservation.
