Heck's at Devil's Thumb Ranch
The beauty and ambiance of Heck’s is fantastic and the food and service rivals the ambiance. Everyone’s meal was excellent and the berry cobbler is to die for.
Had the Valentine's Day menu and selected the steak entree. Big mistake. Extremely tough. A shame since the first and third courses were to die for. Service and ambiance were super. Stephanie was an outstanding waiter.
Heck’s is a nice restaurant but the inexperienced wait staff were inefficient and with both the appetizer and dessert failed to bring plates or utensils to our table (I had to get up twice and search them out). Additionally my wife’s main course was just flat out cold, as a result of them not getting it out to us once cooked. Great ambience but mediocre service and food.
We have been coming here for years.
This time we were disappointed that they drastically changed the menu yet again AND hiked the prices again. CHECK the menu on their webpage before you go!
We ended up with the Wagu burger which was good, but all of the other entrees were too exotic or had odd ingredient combinations. We had a TINY iceberg wedge salad, that frankly, we could have easily made at home for way less than 12 and it would have been better.
Kid's meal selections have changed, again and what used to be 2 kids slider hamburgers for 10, is now 1 little hamburger for 12. Even though the place was not at all crowded when we ate there, it was like the waiters wanted us to leave constantly pestering us about taking away plates.
I think we will just go to Deno's next time.
Family vacation and my husbands birthday
This was our first experience at Devil's Thumb and it didn't disappoint. Heck's Tavern has the best ambiance and was perfect for unwinding after a day of cross country skiing. My Husband had a Wagyu burger and it was a little dry and from my understanding, that is not the norm here. Everything else - the tomato basil soup, smoked turkey sandwich, and the drinks were above par. Definitley a great place to visit.
Love the Wagu burgers. Excellent food. Service was very good. I deducted a star because they were out of several of the beers we wanted.
Wonderful atmosphere, great food and service. We will definitely be back.
Heck’s is way over priced. I paid $6.00 for a half-filled tiny cup of soup and $25.00 for a burger. Wine also way over-priced!
Exceptional is all I can say about Hex's and the service we received... We will be back!
Love DT and visit frequently. our group was seated in the library which is nice and quiet but we missed the restaurant vibe and the views. Wish they would have asked when I made the reservation, but the food and service was awesome nonetheless.
Our waiter was knowledgable, personable, professional. The restaurant knew it was an anniversary celebration. We each got a free glass of Prosecco. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was serene and quiet. A large evergreen tree outside our window was decorated with dozens of holiday multi colored lights. It was a wonderful evening all around.
All was excellent as usual except for the timing of our meal service. Our appetizers and salads/soup arrived at the same time and our dinner arrived before we finished those. It was as if they were rushing us through (6 top) to free the kitchen for 2 large groups that sat before and after us. Never had that experience at this venue before.
Sometimes the food here can be just OK. It IS overpriced... no matter what. But, on this occasion, the food was quite good and all were happy.
Everything was perfect. The guys had the chicken fried steak it was amazing. Loved everything about this place.
We have eaten at Heck's many times and have always enjoyed it. This time the food was okay but not great. The service was not up to normal standards ... had to ask for plates, water, waited a long time for a dessert, etc. The manager came by late into our meal and asked if we had any questions for him. He did not ask how our food was or the service.
The setting is still awesome .. fireplaces, wood, stone walls, etc.
Would recommend for the setting, however the food and service was not outstanding.
My meal (Greens and Grains) was entirely too salty. I mentioned it when the waiter first asked about how are meals tasted, and he merely said “I’ll let the chef know.” At the end of the meal when he asked if I wanted to take my leftovers (well over half the dish) home, I realize now I should have re-mentioned and even complained about the saltiness, but I just said “No thank you”. Still you’d think the waiter would have asked if I hadn’t liked my meal. I do wish I’d complained more explicitly because I don’t think I should have paid for that dish.
My companion’s Wagyu burger was evidently very good.
Been here a number of times and food usually good. Chicken fried steak tough and over cooked—clearly didn’t know how to cook CFS. Soup appetizer was lukewarm on a good day.
Service was sporadic and then all of a sudden the server decided to try and take my plate from me before I was done...didn't even ask first. The server also appeared to either be really hung over or high....
The food is good but in my opinion could be better considering the atmosphere and who they advertise themselves to be... it would also be nice if they had more vegetarian options for the vegetarian friend crowd!
The food at this restaurant was excellent, but the service was extremely rushed. My entree was served before I had even finished my salad and the server offered to bring the kids' ice cream while they were still eating their main course! The staff were constantly circling with clipboards to see what course we were eating. Clearly the restaurant had booked their tables too close together time-wise, and it was unfortunately too fast to even enjoy the delicious food. Very disappointing dining experience for what we were expecting!
Christmas week was understaffed and it took 25 mins to get service after we were seated. Make sure you go to correct restaurant on Open Table, there was confusion about our reservation.
I had an 8pm reservation for the Christmas Eve buffet and as soon as we were seated we we're informed they were closing out the buffet. There were other guests with the same predicament, so they ended up extending until 8:15. Prime rib was ice cold and they were out of a few items. Why promote a special buffet, accept reservations until 9pm and then shut it down early and request people order off the regular menu? Super frustrating to pay $40 per person for bland, cold food. On the upside, sevice staff was friendly and the live music was great.
Had Christmas Eve buffet here. $42 per person. Nice selection; however, no desserts were included on the buffet or included in the price. Devil's Thumb Ranch is gorgeous place tucked away in Grand County.
Brunch is mediocre and overpriced. My Classic Benedict ($18) was served without some of the ingredients listed on the menu — grilled tomato and chives— and was swimming in Hollandaise. My husband’s Huevos Rancheros ($15) consisted of two 6” tortillas, a fried egg, shmear of black beans, and dollop of pico, all stacked like a sad little island in the middle of a huge sea of empty plate. However, our son ordered the Cowpoke Breakfast off of the kids’ menu, which came with eggs, bacon, potatoes, a biscuit, and the hunger-driven envy of his parents...
The food was mediocre at best and the service is poor and slow. Very disappointing for a high end resort like Devil's Thumb.
Great restaurant! The entire dinning experience was wonderful, from the friendly stall to the delicious food. The beautiful fireplace in the middle of the restaurant is a great place for a picture. The bartender made the best dirty martini's.
The service and attention to details were markedly lower than our previous dinner experiences. Cool air was.blowing up from floor “heating” vents under windows on perimeter of the dining room. There were too few narrow rugs to cover the vents to impede the cold breeze. We were able to move to a table a few feet away from the vents but the table next to ours and directly adjacent to a window and floor vent experienced the same problem.
We had to ask for water after being seated for about 15 minutes and even though a server already had delivered our cocktail order.
At the beginning of the meal it took 15 minutes and a second request to get the promised slice of toasted gluten free bread “because of problems with the toaster.”
The $34 salmon entree was served with a smallish square of salmon and without the crispy leeks described in the menu. These were delivered a few minutes later.
We were halfway done eating our entrees by the time our scant pours of wine were brought to the table.
Perhaps increased patronage is compromising the ability to deliver a quality dining experience. We will choose another venue next evening out.
Heck's is always a fun place to go for dinner when we're up in Winter Park. The scenery is unbelievable and the food is good. It's overpriced, but I suppose to be expected at Devil's Thumb Ranch Spa.
Heck's is a true gem of a restaurant in a beautiful and sustainable LEED's (Leader in Energy and Environmental Design) Resort location. We live 20 minutes away and look forward to each visit and dining experience. Feels like a private club with incredible service, ambiance and cuisine.
Good overpriced hotel food.
Service is not authentic. Bland.
We are locals and have been dining at heck's since they opened. It's great for outdoor dining in the summer, their patio and view is wonderful. However, the food this time was a huge disappointment. It has been steadily declining (too many chefs coming and going), but our waygu burgers were barely edible. the patties were all misshapen and falling apart. the buns are a kaiser roll, not a good brioche like they used to be. . .limp lettuce, mine was the BBQ burger and supposed to have an onion ring (I was envisioning a nice thick crisp onion ring, right?). NO! it was inside the bun, soggy along with the limp lettuce--yuck. They used to serve your lettuce, onion, tomato on the side--all nice and crisp for you to add to your burger. French fries are thick and sort of battered, much like a fast food restaurant. They used to have these fabulous French fries--thin and crispy. No more. One of us had the BBQ pork sandwich which was dry, really terrible BBQ. Our server was new and she did a very good job--we didn't want to complain about the food to her since it wasn't her fault. We all left about half of our meal and didn't want leftover boxes. I hope the kitchen got the drift. Way over priced for what you get. We will not be quick to go back. So disappointing when our options in Grand County are extremely limited.
Chicken and dumplings had no dumplings, was a biscuit with a dipper of creamed chicken. Other entrees were better. Beautiful venue, Jeff was an outstanding server, pleasant, helpful, did a great job.
This place is amazing.. the interior.. the views.. the three sided- three story fireplace!! It is perfect. The staff loves their job and it shows.. the food is amazing as well.. this is a must stop!!
We always enjoy sitting by the window and enjoying a great meal!
Beef is always great, but I had the chicken sandwich and it was outstanding!
Never knew this place was here, amazing ranch and the restaurant was great too
It’s a must for the bucket list. Great place, food, ambiance and experience.
The food, already underwhelming, came out incorrectly from the kitchen even on simple orders. It wasn't terrible food, but don't expect to get what you pay for quality wise. On the positive side the building is spectacular, the views gorgeous, the staff enthusiastic and kind, and for a quiet, romantic event that atmosphere certainly delivers.
met two girlfriends here for dinner. The food was delicious, many bright flavors. The meat was raised on their ranch! Beer selection on draft focused on all Colorado beers, new since our previous bisit a few years ago. A bit overpriced
Absolutely great place to spend an evening. Great surroundings, attentive staff and wonderful food and drinks.
Highly recommend Heck's for an over the top place to celebrate a special occasion.
