Hayes Street Grill
The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.
- Surfaces sanitized between seatings
- Common areas deep cleaned daily

Grilled Scallops NJ
with Butternut Squash-Potato Puree, Spinach, Brown Butter, Crispy Capers
I had the paella, and my husband had the petrale sole with king trumpet mushrooms. Both were extremely tasty. Our reservation was for 6pm, for a 7:30 performance. We were seated immediately, the waiter took our order within minutes, and we were served by 6:15. We had drinks and ordered the bread—rustic and fresh. We finished our entrees by 6:45, so we ordered the Meyer lemon mousse with berries—a perfect ending. The tables weren’t all taken, but they did “turn “ pretty quickly. A totally professional staff, and we recognized many of them from previous visits. The maitre de’ seemed to recognize us too, masks and all!
Very busy night. Regular staff was training a lot of new people. Looked like they were really trying on a busy night before the symphony. Food ok--my fish was cool and had three half potatoes. Not great flavor. My friend's paella was ok. Salad was great. We would have had a second glass of wine but never asked. This is a place that pre- symphony has been a special place as a symphony patron since 1992. Hopefully they can get their rhythm back. Have missed them!! Please try this may have been an off night!!
Always great food and perfect service. They pave the meal perfectly to ensure you have a good time and get to theater on time
Good food well prepared. Not fancy but substantial. A bit pricey. Watered-down drinks, limited service.
Halibut cooked to perfection. Delicate, tasty coleslaw, substitution happily made for their great French fries—too tempting on a diet! Attentive but not intrusive service. Our favorite pre-concert dinner place.
We always come to the Hayes Street Grill before going to the SF Opera. When we were there on October 14th, it was busy because there were patrons going to the opera and the symphony...both just around the corner. The service was efficient and on-time...and friendly and helpful. We shared the Caesar Salad and it was garlicky and delicious. I had the Filet of Sole and it was very tasty. My husband had the Scallops and he said that they were delicious. And, yes, we plan to return when we attend the next opera!
It felt almost normal to be back at HSG and then attending city arts and lectures. Baby steps to our former normal. And the French fries were as good as ever
Old-school, vaguely NYC-ish. Tables very close. Lots of fish selections! Limited wine list. If you're in your 60s or beyond, this is a very comfortable place. A reassuring touch of class and elegance.
It was a same-day reservation; hence, we took an early seating. We enjoyed the meal. Servers were attentive and prompt. Other guests were friendly, which made for a pleasant experience.
A classic seafood restaurant with very clean flavors, excellent service. Loved the avocado and grapefruit salad, the grilled salmon, the petrale sole.
Started with a great margarita.
Then a salad that was incredible, perfectly dressed and the goat cheese was heavenly.
My hamburger was one of the best in the City and I have had all the really good ones. The French fries were REALLY good…I mean REALLY good. We had a wonderful Rossi di Montalcino with dinner.
And I finished with a delicious chocolate sundae.
It's a joy to be back in this much-loved after-concert place. We've been going there for years and love the ambience and the reliable, though not overpoweringly marvelous fish.
This was so disappointing, given the amazing reviews. The salad was oily. The grilled fish was tasteless and way undercooked. The lemon-caper butter was similarly flavorless.
Service was excellent. Food was very good, the fish was very fresh.
Accommodated our delayed arrival, classic petrale sole still excellent. Unpretentious ambiance, fresh seafood well prepared, good wines.
Reliable pre performance venue.
The salad was overdtessed & oily, and $34 swordfish steak was the tiniest I have ever seen w just a side of fries. Service was attentive.
Excellent service. Dishes are always reliably good. Specializing in fish and seafood.
Like returning to an old friend. Comfortable as ever, non-fussy food excellently prepared. Gracious service that wasn’t trying to elicit my experience. Nice launch for our first visit to SFJazz in far too many pandemic months.
Ask the servers for wine recommendations because they have a great sense of how to pair a meal with a wine choce.
Top rating for the wait staff. Great job. Food was good also. Pricey.
Great food and ambience. A local gem for many years!
Always wonderful place to be. The food is great and always consistent and the people are the best.
WE WERE VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT SALMON WAS THE ONLY SEAFOOD ITEM AVAILABLE AT 6.00 PM. ALL OTHER SEAFOOD HAD BEEN SOLD OUT
Not worth the money...very small portions. And the service was spotty.
It's always a treat to eat at Hayes Street Grill. Their sea food is fresh and very tasty and the service from their very long term waiter staff is hard to beat.
Booked HSG for anniversary dinner and show at the Jazz Center. Knew the restaurant was going to be busy due to the theater crowd, yet were seated late. By 6:10 pm they were out of every fish selection but salmon. Not a fav so ordered the Eggplant Parmesan (and the salmon for my husband). The food literally came out of the kitchen 6 minutes later, the same time as my drink. The ladies sitting next to us said "Didn't you just order?!" The salmon was raw, and there were literally 4 slices of eggplant (not breaded, without any red sauce, and about 1/2 teaspoon of cheese). It looked as though they ran out of that too and tried to do make-shift with the little ingredients they had. Appetizer and dinner portions were minuscule, about 3-4 bites each and the bill was over $100. I know restaurants have been hit hard, but so disappointed as this place used to be a staple when we lived in the city.
We enjoyed a wonderful pre-concert lunch. Both halibut and swordfish meals were prepared perfectly as was the deliciously light lemon mousse. Great service and attention. With COVID policies in place, we felt very comfortable, relaxed and safe eating indoors. Looking forward to the next visit.
First time here based on being highly rated on this site. In my opinion it's a solid 3 star restaurant, which is what it's averaging on another website. Other nearby restaurants were full and had no reservations available, yet Hayes Street Grill was less than half full; that should have been a sign. The food and service were just "ok". No water was offered, waiter didn't check until after food was eaten and wine glass long empty before asking if everything was alright. The fish was served very simply with french fries that were disappointing - a lot of tiny overcooked bits were included. We found it way overpriced for the total of what we got and left disappointed. We got dessert elsewhere. The restaurant itself seems stuck in the past and needs an overhaul. I can't remember the last time I ate at a restaurant and the waiter wrote out the bill and totaled it by hand. A novelty at this point. All I can think is that their older clientele -- the people going to the Opera and symphony are the ones that keep this place afloat and like it unchanged and rate the restaurant as if it were their Uber/Lyft driver -- always the same 5 stars whether it deserves it or not.
The service, particularly by the Host, Maitre'd, was excellent. I made a reservation but we had a show to make so he accommodated us and we made our show on time!! It's the GO-TO restaurant when going to the symphony, opera, or theater for me!!
Convenient to SFJazz, nice menu, healthy delicious choices, lovely atmosphere, good bar, excellent service. Happy this restaurant has maintained high standards after all these years.
We had a lovely time! The food was wonderful, and the service excellent. Perfect place to celebrate any special occasion.
most delicious fish that we have ever had anywhere, but the hot fudge sundae was a disappointment cause the fudge was't hot and there was a very little ice cream'
waitress forgot to get the wine we ordered, but the main coarse was worth going back for.
Love this San Francisco classic. You can always rely on good food ( especially fish dishes) and a good cocktail!
Great appetizers—grilled calamari with beans and smoky trout spread with radishes!
The kitchen was as remembered, the seasoning of something as simple as bib lettuce was perfection. The grilled scallops with butternutsquash puree and spinach was delicious and nutritious and tasted of Thanksgiving, warm, inviting and memorable. Since we were not rushing to a performance, service was excellent and evenly paced. It was a lovely experience and evening. Thank you!
Back at Hayes St. Grill after a long time due to covid, the food and service remain top notch. A delicious Rose from Bandol by the glass accompanied the meal. It seems most things change for the worse, not Hayes St Grill. It's even better than I remembered.
We love Hayes St grill. Not the most adventurous menu, but everything was cooked very well and the service was Top-Notch!
Everything was delicious. Was great to be greeted by staff that I'd not seen a a very long time!
We loved experiencing Hayes Street for the very first time. A new friend recommended your restaurant to us and we invited another couple. It was perfect! I will look forward to coming back some day, and will share this restaurant with others.
Seafood was delicious, wine was wonderful, ambiance was relaxing and our server was great!
We have been going here for years and the food has always been great. That was not the case last night, the pork in my pork schnitzel what as thin as a piece of paper and the dough as thick as a piece of cardboard. The french fries, which have always been great were little pieces the size of my finger nail.
