Excellent food, but to call the service glacial would be kind. Glaciers move at lightning speed by comparison. We had to chase down our server to order our entree and again to get the check. It was a Sunday evening and the place was nearly empty so it wasn't as though they were hard pressed to take care of other guests.
Well thought out menu, perfectly executed. Very attentive staff. Everyone seemed to know it was our anniversary, and went out of their way to make of feel special.
Great place for pre or post Theater brunch, lunch or supper. Friendly attentive staff. Menu is enjoyable and sophisticated.
The hostess was very helpful, after reserving the first service of the evening, I got a call wondering if we wished to move our reservation to an earlier time. I left a note with the reservation that we were attending the theater, so this call was spot on. The steelhead, scallops and sea bass were excellent. The waiter was attentive and friendly. We finished early enough so we could walk leisurely across the street to the Lyceum for the play.
Good food, good ambience. Kitchen and service are very accommodating before concert when it comes to the timing.
The food was excellent. We had theatre tickets and they stayed in schedule.
This was my first time to eat at the Grant Grill. We had reservations to see a show at the Civic Theater and was looking for a good meal close to the theater. The Grant Grill was outstanding! The elegant ambiance of the restaurant accompanied the excellent food and service we received. The entrees were a little pricey but the presentation and extras ( complimentary focaccia bread and appetizer) made up for the cost. Our waiter recommended wines for our meal and the food arrived in a timely matter. The sauce on the Hawaiian Catch of the Day was memorable. For a fine dining meal, I would go to the Grant Grill again.
You go here for the "experience"!. The taste and presentation of the food are unmatched. But portion sizes are unbelievably small. Looking for something else to eat after spending almost $75 on dinner is not great value for money!
Just an amazing pre-theatre dining experience. If there’s a higher rating than 10, the Grant Grill should get it. Thank you!!
It was the second time that I brought my 14 yr old niece for a pre theatre dinner. She enjoys food and appreciates the elegant atmosphere. Our waitress was wonderful, as was the rest of the staff. Our food was excellent! It was a lovely and delicious experience. A special treat.
Best anniversary venue ever ! Ambiance, service, and meal were excellent. Very special place and the highest quality food prepared by outstanding chef. Wait staff are knowledgeable and go the extra mile to make our experience memorable. Will definitely revisit for another special occasion.
We were seated at a booth meant for 6 to 8 people. We were two. The booth was at the back door directly across from the kitchen door. Definitely not what I expected from Grants Grill on Christmas Day.
The service was excellent. Most of the courses were quite good. The entire, however, was duck breast and confit which normally means a confit leg. We did not get that. There was a very small amount of confit in the salad.
Arrived early for our reservation. Politely offered 2 Mimosas while waiting . . . 'Mimosas' had no champagne in them. Why call them mimosas then? Once at table, service very POOR! Really. I don't complain much. There was no cream for coffee at table. It took 10 mins to receive cream. The buffet was quite minimal. Pastries were honestly of Sara Lee quality. The roasted potatoes were desiccated. The few that moisture in them tasted good, but at least 70% of what was available was comparable to potato 'chips'. The eggs may have been better at Denny's, honestly. The bacon was good. The coffee was good. The fruit was good.
After we were done and our plates were whisked away, we waited for 15mins for someone to realize we needed our check, however I had to go to the Hostess podium to ask for our check. There was no one at the bar in order to get change for the valet. Nice Bar, but no one minding it.
My wife and I have been to the US Grant several times in past years for the great Christmas Brunch up stairs. WHAT HAPPENED for 2019? WOW!!
Service and food was exceptional.
This is the second time we had lunch at the Grant Grill before an afternoon SD symphony performance. The first time we enjoyed ourselves and so returned. This time was quite different from our first experience and is as follows: no hostess when we arrived who then showed up and took the phone for several minutes while we stood waiting; very few people in the restaurant and no one at the bar area so it lacked a festive feel Christmas holiday Sunday lunch); after being seated we waited for more than 5 minutes before anyone said anything to us even though there were 3 men waiters going here and there past our table; finally one of the waiters said something and then when into the kitchen and brought out a woman waitress who helped us but did not seem aware that we had been seated; the Manhattan at $16 was not that great; the Cobb salad was not that great; the tuna fish sandwich was very good; and many of the wait people were just standing around with there hands in their pockets (figuratively). Our waitress was very nice but overall we were not happy and probably not return.
J.D. the chef is incredible! Delicious, nutritious & excellent presentation! Pablo the Mgr. Gives everyone a warm welcome! The servers are tentative & make you feel very special! A wonderful experience any time of the day!
I loved the decorations. the food served was fine. My only request would be for you to broaden your menu. To add Organic foods,& Organic Grassfed Meats and more variety. I was stunned there was not a dinner with Crab or Lobster I could order. I was stunned there was only 1 basic salad with green goddess dressing. So a bit more variety. And that you did offer Lamb, but failed to offer the Mint Jelly.
I did love that I was able to get Razberries and Conac for dessert upon request. And that we were both able to make changes to the offered 1 Steak dish and get mashed potatoes and the Asian pear upon request.
So, maybe just Americanise your menu a bit more.
I asked for a Gingerbread MArtini and you did not offer it. So I requested a Chocolate Martini and got something of a Bailey's Martini with zero chocolate in it nor on the rim. It was fine as I love Bailey's and was closer to the Gingerbread Martini I'd originally requested. So, maybe prepare and add some Specialty drinks for Christmas would be nice.
Really appreciated the 20% discount offered along with our Symphony Tiks- Enjoyed the ambiance and even ran into some friends. The waiter was very nice and helpful. And oh yes- Perhaps add a set of Salt & Pepper Shakers to each Table. The Himalayan Salt would be a nice touch. And as the waiter to offer the Pepper when the salad is served. We had to ask for help to request the Shakers and then he offered the Pepper.
Escargot would be nice on your menu..... ;o)
Perfect place to celebrate.
It was elegant, beautiful, wonderful service and an amazing food. Every bite was out of this word. The mock Turtle soup was excellent and the Venison 👌 I have no word for it 🥂. Great people. 🥂
We re-tried this historic hotel to show family from out of town. I am happy to report it is great improved. The staff was helpful and accommodating. The food was delicious with a variety of options for multiple pallets. The service was a little slow in the middle, but overall everything was very enjoyable.
Wonderful evening. Our server was extremely attentive. Although there was a large Christmas party in the bar/lounge, we were seated in a quiet booth within the restaurant which kept the noise level to a minimum. My husband's birthday dinner was a success!
Overall a wonderful experience. Highly recommended!
Fabulous as usual!!!
Grant Grill is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal in downtown San Diego. Servers are very attentive especially when going to the theater or other live event. The Chef does magic in the kitchen! WOW! The food combinations and how it's plated is artistic and tasteful. We shared the little gem salad, one of us had the scallops with black rice and I had the Hawaiian white fish, opah. We also shared the panna cotta for dessert.
Great food great atmosphere, just wish out waitress was on our service, had to call on other waiters around
I came here to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. Everything was absolutely amazing. We had the Beef Carpaccio and Spanish Octopus to start. Then, we had the Hawaiian catch of the day and Sea Bass for the entree. We ended the night with the white chocolate mousse. The food was delicious. The service was phenomenal and music was amazing. Will definitely be coming back for another amazing night!
Hostess was utterly useless and slow and kept us waiting even though we had a reservation. Guests arriving after us were seated first. I had previously visited this restaurant with amazing hostess. The new ones should either be trained better or fired. As I am also a guest at the hotel, their breakfast seating was equally pathetic. The same hostess took forever to seat three tables and she looked busy but she was just walking around randomly.
We arrived on Thanksgiving and enjoyed the menu without wine matches. Ordered my choice. Food was very good and served attractively, and the service was excellent. Enjoyed the music very much, but it biased my response to your previous question about noise level. The non-music noise was unobtrusive.
We went for the Thanksgiving fixed menu. Some of the dishes such as the smoke cauliflower soup were what would be expected in a restaurant at this level. Most of the other dishes were cold. The ingredients were excellent, however the preparation left much to be desired. For example I had a New York steak with truffles and chanterelle mushrooms. The chanterelles were greasy over salted. The steak was surprisingly tough. And the truffles were lost In a sea of salt. Very disappointing.
Expected a bit more luxury.
My husband and I came for my birthday dinner. The vegan entrée I had, the quinoa ravioli, is served with a mushroom jous that was so salty it rendered the dish inedible. The ravioli filling was lacking in flavor. My husband loved his non-vegan entrée, a steak, which he said was "cooked to perfection." Nice ambiance and service overall. Was disappointed that our server did not provide a birthday dessert on the house although she was aware it was my birthday. They could have provided an assortment of berries if there were no vegan dessert options. Other diners were provided complimentary birthday desserts.
This was the perfect spot for a birthday dinner - especially given the fact we were staying at the hotel. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent and served at the proper temperature. We've already made a reservation for next month when we're at the symphony!
Dining at this restaurant has always been a very pleasant break from the daily grind. Thank you for continued delicious foods and great service.
Birthday lunch with my best friend. The setting is gorgeous, quiet and the food uniquely prepared . I recommend it without hesitation .
Love Grant Grill. Best way to start the day is with an elegant breakfast in a beautiful dining room. We eat at the grant grill quite often. Food is excellent and service is elegant and proper. Always a delight.
Food preparation and ingredients excellent! Creative menu and exceptional service. Waitstaff Brandon was terrific and an asset to the restaurant. Will be back when in town.
Chef John Duran is a great new arrival to the Grant's kitchen. Beatrice and Eduardo give wonderful service as usual. Excellent pre-theater meal!
The Grant Grill is one of those old feeling establishments that oozes with class and where service is NOT an exception but an expectation.
