Grandstaff and Stein Book Sellers
Love the atmosphere, cozy vibes and the drink options.
Wow. We were super disappointed in our recent dining opportunity at this restaurant. It is definitely a cool place but...the service was not at all good. We ordered a dink, no issue and then waited for another 40 mins to finally flag down a person who would take our order. The drinks were really just ok. The food was not even close to ok. The steak my husband ordered was TOUGH! Really TOUGH and lacked FLAVOR. The crabcakes I ordered were SMALL and not terribly tasty. The salad was missing ingredients and the stuffed mushrooms were BLAND and not at all worth the price. Needless to say...we won’t be returning.
We had a wonderful dining experience. Can’t wait to tell lots of people about this gem.
The possibilities with this venue are endless, but instead of a great experience, we were met with just another restaurant. The food was great and the staff was friendly, but it did not feel like a speakeasy experience. We dressed up for what we thought was going to be a 1920s evening but the staff didn't even dress or act like the 20s. 2 of the staff approached our table and said we should be working there. We anticipated this evening and were sincerely disappointed. If you are looking for a true speakeasy experience, go elsewhere.
Server was nice and knowledgeable of menu. Crab cakes were too spicy and veal didn’t have a ton of flavor to it. Overall though it was a pleasant experience and would go back. Drinks were great!
I’ve been here a few times and had good experiences, but this weekend our visit was not so great. We had to flag down our server multiple times to order food and drinks and had to ask for more water 3 times before it was brought to us. Food and drinks were ok. Had a reservation but was a little disappointed to be seated on the stools as I hoped we could have been seated at a booth. Overall not the best experience.
The staff was wonderful and really like the place itself. The food was not very good, but would go back as we enjoyed being there and had a fun night.
You need a password to enter through the bookcase to the speakeasy. The ambience is amazing. Music was a little off from the vibe but overall fun experience and great drinks
Yes this place was awesome, very chill environment. Food was great, and service was nice. Definitely going back!
Very cool entrance. Waiter had exceptional knowledge. Bartender had great selection of specialty drinks, perhaps the best in Richmond
Our first time in this unique little spot! Food was outstanding, it was easy to eat gluten free. The libations list made us excited to try new things! Staff was engaging and accommodating. We will certainly dine again.
We had a wonderful birthday dinner celebration with seven people in our party, amazing service, great food, and lovely craft cocktails. Such a fun place, and an asset to Richmond!
1st visit. Love led the venue. Excellent cocktails and delicious food! Will be back
Fun speakeasy with your everyday cocktails as well as fun new ones! They did a good job with covid precautions
Fantastic food and mixed drinks. We come here often. Such a fun and unique place
Went here to try something new downtown. It was our first time here and had no expectations. Came with my father-in-law from out of town to help celebrate my son’s 2nd birthday. It was really great. Definitely reminiscent of a 1920’s speakeasy. Very much my flavor. I wanted to order everything. Tried a ginger beer, that was interesting. I wouldn’t recommend it lol. It is a spicy drink. Ended up with the Ribeye with brussel sprouts and grits. Steak could’ve had more flavor and was a little over my requested temperature. Brussel sprouts were my favorite part of the dish. I tasted my daughter’s crab cakes and those were amazing. Food was good but expected more from my steak especially something as flavorful as a ribeye. The service was awesome and super friendly. I didn’t even get a sip of my wife’s amaretto sour, BOTH. Looks like I’ll have to order one for myself next time. Would highly recommend this place to anyone. I’m definitely coming back.
Didn’t want to leave out the spacing regarding COVID. Very much my expectation for spacing between patrons. They also had hand sanitizer at every table.
Coming in from out of town and based on the reviews we decided to try it. What a treat tonight was. Everything about this place was special from the ambiance to the staff to the food—simply perfection. And, for those of us who are being cautious about socially distancing, this place does it perfectly. Please go and enjoy it! I’m glad we did!
This was our first time here. The service was exceptional. The atmosphere was a fun 1920"s vibe. The drinks were amazing. The stuffed mushrooms were a bit bland, but the coconut shrimp was good. My Osso Bucco was lovely. My husband and daughter enjoyed their entrees as well ( Shrimp pasta diavelo, Snapper)
Amazing place! Best staff ❤️
The staff were all very attentive and helpful, moreso than I’ve experienced at any other restaurant lately!
I like the atmosphere of the place but opentable should let you know you need a password to get in.
I had a steak which was good but a little over cooked. I’m sorry to say most of the rest of the food was bland. My mother is very, very, very frugal and ordered the chicken, it was so overcooked she couldn’t eat it and for the first time ever, opted not to take home the left overs. Unless they announce a menu change or new chef we probably won’t go back.
Exception experience! Food and drinks were a bit pricey, but overall we had an awesome time!
Hubs and I had dinner here for our wedding anniversary and it was outstanding. I have nothing but praise for the food (BEST baked brie and brussels sprouts I’ve ever had), the service (Ethan is THE BEST), and the ambiance. Everything was wonderful and we will be coming back on our next trip to Richmond.
Excellent food and service
The service was excellent and fun. The servers were dressed in period costumes which added to the overall experience. The food was great and the smokey old fashions were a big hit.
The place was perfect! We had a great time love the atmosphere and our food was amazing.
Great place. Good food , great cocktails....fun atmospheric
What a fun experience!! Food was great. I’ve already recommended to several friends. The crab dip is a must. Yummy
The cocktails are the best. They are worth the trip alone!
A very nice dinner. Food is amazing
Original idea...and overall great execution. The cocktails were great, our server was outstanding, but the food was just ok to not so great. The grits with the snapper were very stodgy, like they'd been sitting around and re-heated. The snapper was ok, not terrifically flavorful and a little tough. The pot pie was ok, a bit heavy handed on the seasoning. The gnocchi was ok, but again the sauce seemed old and re-heated, plus it was spicy which wasn't really in the description (roasted red pepper sauce doesn't automatically suggest a spiciness. Given that was the best option for our young daughter, it was a bit of a bummer when it turned out too spicy for her to eat very much of it. If they can up their game on the food and maybe on the staff "presentation" (some not so professional behaviour and talk - in earshot if you hit the restrooms), this place could be super impressive. I could see actors as wait staff here really get into the speakeasy idea.
The ambience was perfect - dark-ish, cozy, very speak-easy :). It was quiet when we were there because it was super early. Not sure otherwise.
Overall, we had fun but if we returned it would only be for apps and cocktails.
Our server was overwhelmed. He might have had other tables, but we made a reservation for 12 and we had 13. He should have been our server except I think he must have had so many other responsibilities.
Hostess was very nice and welcoming. Great atmosphere, good food and drinks. First time I’d been and not sure what exactly I was expecting but it was more of a regular restaurant vibe than I expected.
Duck drummettes were an incredible appetizer. Entrees of veal osso buco and shrimp andouille were excellent. We also saw other menu items that provided interesting teases to make us want to come back.
First time visitors. We enjoyed the Burlesque show! Had to leave early due to other commitments. Next visit we will stay for the entire show.
Leadership team thank you dinner
Our waiter was super nice and had great recommendations! The whole theme was really cool!
Our waitress was amazing, very personable and attentive, the place was amazing as far as the theme. I would definitely be going back.
Had two filets, both were cooked properly, however they were definitely not a high quality cut of meat. Service was marginal at best. One time the server was supposed to be bringing a drink, and after 10 minutes you could see her on her phone by the servers station. Never did get the drink before we left.
