We went to Goose & Gander on our trip to Napa for our anniversary. Overall the food was good but our server was subpar. She took forever to come to the table and I had to ask her if we could order as she wasn’t attentive. The servers who filled our water glasses and delivered our food more attentive to us.
Waste of time & money for food. Nice looking restaurant, cocktails & downstairs bar good. Front house staff very nice. Waiter we had was awful. Never checked on us and food was terrible. Spent over $300 for 3 people in lousy steak, sides and awful peach desert.
Perfect end to a day. Great service and cocktails Food excellent on all Counts
During our 7 day vacation in California we stayed for a few days in Napa valley and Sonona, and then in San Francisco and we ate dinner at 6 restaurants. The Goose and Gander stands out as the worst value and I highly recommend you don't go here. I am so sorry that we chose this restaurant for our special event. Not only was the value horrible, but the pace of the service was rushed and then languished. Here are the rankings so that you can put our ranking of Goose and Gander in last place, in perspective:
FIRST PLACE (three way tie): Cook (St. Helena), A16 (San Francisco), and Buckeye Roadhouse (Mill Valley, CA) - both tied for first place - suburb tempo for service, great value for tremendous food that actually had great flavor and nuance. Though all three are tied, among those the favorite is A16. The difference between these three restaurants and the Goose and Gander on every level is night and day.
SECOND PLACE: SUR at the Barnyard-Carmel (Carmel) - excellent food, excellent value, good pace, casual, upscale dining, all well prepared. The Goose and Gander doesn't come close to the quality of the food here, yet SUR does not present with the arrogance of the Goose and Gander -- night and day.
THIRD PLACE: Harborview (San Francisco) - this Chinese restaurant has a reasonable value, but the dinner was far too saturated with soy sauce. The pace was fine.
FOURTH PLACE: Having eaten at all of the foregoing five restaurants, I can say without hesitation that the Goose and Gander need: (a) a new Chef (and if the Chef owns the restaurant they should change professions) - nothing special here; and (b) a new dining room manager that can teach staff how to pace dining so the experience is not like a factory-restaurant experience. By far the worse of the six.
My boyfriend and I had dinner here for his birthday and G&G was great in making it a memorable experience. From the customized "happy birthday" menu, to the surprise dessert and overall great food & service! We'll definitely come back next time we're in town!
Ben was a fantastic server and Jason great wine knowledge - great time and looking forward to coming back again.
Let's start with the service - absolutely amazing. The ambience is a classic Napa county one, cool, quiet, clean, Spanish touch. The food was great and the kitchen was flexible with our changes. Would come again every day.
Really cool menu and great service. Well done!!!
Soup was great, other just mediocre. Good service when they got to you. Area back by fountain where we sat was worn and tired looking. Ask to sit up front, much better ambiance.
Great wine list. Good value, variety and great taste on the food items. Loved my desert!
You can't go wrong with the mushroom soup and the burgers!
Great service, atmosphere and food!
Went for our 4 year anniversary and we got a couple free glasses of rosé! Stake were amazing!!!
Food was pretty good. But, the drinks are really the stars of the show here. Dessert was probably the best course. Service was excellent. Some prices seemed reasonable while others were surprisingly high. For 2 people, 2 drinks each, 2 entrees, shared app and shared dessert it was about $300.
Great cocktails and service! Would highly recommend
Service was good. Staff was attentive and nice. Food was mediocre at best. Cooks have gotten lazy. Definitely time for us to find a new favorite spot 😕
The chicken wings were very delicious. As was the chicharron. The Brie in the Mac and cheese was a bit off putting. The duck fries were good but nothing stood out for me to tell they were fried in duck fat. I ordered a burger as medium and it was on the medium well side. A couple from our table each ordered the black angus steak and the meat itself lacked flavor. The marinade was good but could not compensate for the lack of flavor in the meat. My bf ordered the bone in pork chop medium. It was outstanding. Our server was excellent. Service was great. We will come back and try other things. Thanks.
Awsome food, great service, and dog friendly! Perfect way to end the day of wine tasting!
Was very hot on the patio. Asked the server to see if we could be moved inside. Was reluctant. Did move us to covered outside patio. Not much better. Saw a larger party be moved inside. Yes it’s more money however we are paying customers also. When I asked the server about the chicken on the menu, his response was “chicken is chicken”not what I asked. Pork chop was good. Left without ordering dessert because it was too hot. Understand you can’t control weather but could of been inside like the larger party.
Highly recommend. Everything was cooked to perfection!!
Goose and Gander was the last place we ate during a fun visit to Napa Valley to celebrate our wedding in Calistoga six years ago. We enjoyed many excellent meals, but this was the best. The patio is a lovely, quiet setting with plenty of space. It’s right in St. Helena but feels more secluded. Service was great: friendly and casual, as you would expect in Napa, but flawless and perfectly paced. Both our waiter and the sommelier answered our questions helpfully and were ready with good suggestions when asked. The food was equally good. The NY strip was top drawer and perfectly done, enchanted by an interesting lime-pepper butter. The pork chop was in a fight with that at Mustards Grill for best either of us could recall. Our only criticism would be that a couple of dull rolls were below the standard set by the good bread in other local restaurants. Goose and Gander was a wonderful way to wrap up our holiday. We would recommend it to anyone.
Poor service, entrees brought to table while still eating first course. Server called me dude and was overall lacking in training. Previous experiences were very good.
Extremely disappointed with this restaurant! I am from St. Helena and brought my friends here and am sad to say I was embarrassed and horrified by the service! I also seriously hope that my friends realize that this horrible service is not the way most of our restaurants are! This is St. Helena and the Napa Valley and there are minimum standards! Additionally, the menu is extremely limited and has a huge mark up! Yes, the food was good but this is common place in Napa Valley we have so many restaurants with good food! Not to mention the restaurant charges a 4% benefit surcharge when most restaurants only charge 2% and your already making a huge profit with your food! The hostess was rude to us when we arrived and tried to get us to eat in the bar! Really? Then the Sommelier came to our table opened our wine before dinner on what I felt was an attempt to get us to drink our bottle and buy an extremely overpriced bottle from The Restaurant then he insulted the wine I brought and actually said. "Let me know if you want something heavier?" ThIs again is not what we expect for Napa Valley Service! I know a lot of St. Helena locals strongly dislike This restaurant and now I know why! I will not be back and will tell everyone I know not to go here! It's really a shame when you consider the past amazing restaurants such as The Martini House and Spring Street that we're here before! Do not get ripped off by going to this place!
Good experience. Great taste… loved the hint of Asian fusion in the pig ears. Pork chop juicy but mildly undercooked. Coliflower salad delicious! Excellent service.
Great food, great ambiance, great wine… what else can you ask for?
We thought the restaurant was in a fabulous location with a really nice outdoor garden setting. The prices seemed a little high as alacart items. We did not appreciate the initial ordering process as they gave us incorrect menus and then came back and rudely said “give me those menus back” and did not bring us the current menus on a timely basis.
Excellent. Well done with two kids
Awesome service -
From check in to wait staff. Super quality food and drinks - outdoor was lovely. Pretty much nothing that rly needs to be improved. Classy and casual and a happy experience all around.
Disappointing experience. Very limited menu; mediocre food - vegetables had too much garlic; one side arrived before the food; steak was cooked appropriately but average quality and expensive. Poor value.
Average service and no serving utensils for sides.
Fantastic experience at Goose and Gander! Wonderful service and food to celebrate our honeymoon. Will definitely return.
Food and service were great. Definitely coming back for the burger!
Excellent food and service and a very accommodating staff! Enjoyed!
Awesome food, friendly service, knowledgeable waiters and helpful hostess.
The food prices were very reasonable. Quality was top level.
I would recommend the pork chop and the hamburger. I would like to also ask them to get a espresso machine.
Also the bar was excellent. The cocktails are great. Noise level was also great.
We will definitely go back and we will also recommend to our many friends and family and neighbors.
The corkage fee is a little high. We don’t mind but still was seemed high. Maybe a COVID problem.
The location is perfect just off of the main drag. We found an easy parking space. We did not have to pay. They should consider getting valet service.
When will we be eating and enjoying the inside of this restaurant ?
Food was decent. Nothing special. Overpriced for the portion that was served. Service was okay. Overall good, but not outstanding.
I love everything about Goose and Gander!
They seated us outside I was in the sun and was pretty miserable!
Great drinks and food! We will definitely be back.
We loved the corn croquettes and the steak and pork burger were to die for.
Don't miss the french fries cooked in duck fat either. Yum.
Great food! Service was excellent. Atmosphere was lovely. Fried pig ears were so good. Duck fat fries are a must try, as are the fried olives.
Ever since they opened, this place has had an identity crisis. Is it fancy, is it casual? It's very pricy and the food is just ok. Macaroni and cheese was both burnt and not melted. There aren't any vegetarian options unless you want salads, starters, or sides - or an impossible burger, which if you don't like meat, why would you want a non-meat burger that tastes like meat? SO many restaurants in the valley, this is better for cocktails - but don't expect anything ground breaking - the cocktail list has been pretty much the same since they opened.
Went for our anniversary weekend and everything was excellent.. great bar program well balanced drinks. Food was delicious. My husband loved his burger and the chicken and mushroom soup were amazing. Staff were awesome and gave great recommendations.
