Are there ten way to say excellent!? Three of us had dinner at Pamplona for the first time Thursday night during happy hour and were delightfully surprised by the extraordinarily delicious food, friendly, professional service, and warm, elegantly casual atmosphere. As good as any of the best restaurants in New Orleans, I'd say. We started with glasses of the Spanish house wine, red and white, 50% off and very good, then shared a variety of tapas (25% off) and other dishes, with raves all around: Two hearty, crusty ciabatta loaves steaming fresh from the oven served with a garlicky olive oil dip; the marinated olives, a variety of them plus whole garlic cloves; albondigas meatballs in a thick red sauce (the menu says spicy, but they're flavorful, not hot); creamy crawfish croquettes; slightly chilled and refreshing ceviche – salmon this evening – combined with chopped cucumbers, red pepper, tomatoes, and parsley, all marinated in a lime dressing and served with crunchy plantain strips; the fresh greens salad; curried collard greens with chickpeas in a tasty broth; lean hanger steak, sliced and perfectly cooked and seasoned with rosemary. And the fries – fried in duck fat! – scrumptious, served in a large wire cone, and so plentiful, we couldn't finish, we'd eaten so much throughout the meal. We had no room for dessert, either. But everything we devoured was prepared with mouthwatering combinations of ingredients and beautifully presented. Not one complaint, and we were even happier with the bill – $40 per person including a 20% tip for all that food, 3 glasses of wine, one diet coke, and one Irish coffee. We are sure to return regularly. The place was packed, so make reservations in advance! Allow at least 1 1/2 hours for dining. More
