FuGakyu has always been 5 stars to me! Came in sat at the adorable bar, where we had a wide selection of Sake.
Our sushi is always so fresh and delicious! Thank you, Piper
Lovely restaurant with friendly staff and great Japanese food! The manager/host was very accommodating to my special requests for the special birthday dinner I had for my boyfriend (and friends). will come again!
We wait for at least 20 minutes to get a waitress, she seems in bad mood and didn’t even want to ask the chef for a special request due to my son’s allergies, she also forgot to place one of my orders and my husband’s drink order as well . Never again coming back to FuGaKyu
It was our first time there. The sushi was outstanding. My daughter and I both got noodle bowls which were delicious. The friend banana and chocolate dessert was a great ending to our meal’
The ambiance was great and the food was unreal. If you want sushi they have a great variety.
The food is average I didn’t find it very different than other Japanese restaurants in Boston, given its price. Neither did I discover new dishes other than those common in Japanese restaurants outside Japan. If you’ve been to Japan, you’d know there are more than just Maki, Sushi, or Sashimi in Japanese food.
Therefore, it is overpriced at this place.
Good. But not quite good enough to justify the prices.
Welcoming a friend from Korea.
Generally good. Our server was attentive and food came our in a timely manner. For the price feels like there are better options in the area (Shiki and Genki Ya each provide better value).
They did some renovations and the place looks great. The sushi was delicious! Can’t wait to go back!
Great date night place especially if you don't want to be squeezed next to another couple and feel like you can have a conversation.
Food was excellent as always
We had a reservation but took them 45 min to give us seats. This is considering we had a booked reservation. It was frustrating. Then it took a while for their server to come to our table to get orders!
Their back room at the corner on second floor is very stuffy and dark. They didn’t used to have this room and it is not good!
Their food thankfully remains good.
Wonderful people. Made our 92 year old mothers birthday so special. Enormous gratitude for a lovely evening.
As always, Fugakyu has proven as to why they’re the best in the sushi industry! Fabulous meal, outstanding service, and excellent drinks! Will be back very soon!
Overall amazing - one of the best meals ever.
My girlfriend and I had the omakase this past Valentine's Day. While it doesn't seem to be written on the menu or website, there is an omakase option that we were able to do by making a reservation and calling to request that we do omakase and be seated at the sushi bar. We arrived and they had two seats at the bar for us right in front of Master Sushi Chef Masaki - even though it was a Friday and Valentine's Day there was no one else seated in the sushi bar area for the whole night although we ate rather early (6-7:30pm) The rest of the staff took care of us well, bringing us towels to clean our hands and frequently refilling our water and tea.
For the omakase, it was honestly the best sushi I've ever had and one of the best meals I've ever had. My girlfriend and I have never had omakase before but we love sushi. The hand-picked and personally tailored 9-course meal (you can ask for how many courses/pieces of sushi you want, it was surprisingly filling even though after the sashimi it was mostly just individual sushi pieces) was amazing (the first four courses were very good, but then the next five were just mind-blowing). Having Chef Masaki make the food in front of us and then explain to us the origins of each fish and other details about the food was also a touching experience. It came out to $170 in total (without tax and tip) for two people, or $85 per person. We both felt it was extremely worthwhile.
Super happy we were able to spend Valentine's Day there and many thanks to Chef Masaki for an unforgettable evening.
The best sushi exp. in metro Boston far and away. The food is top notch, however there are better value options locally
Hadn't eaten here in several years. We got stuck at one of upstairs tables, which was not as nice. We asked for a nicer spot, and were told they were 'occupied', though they could have asked if we wanted to wait for 5-10 minutes, as several cleared out soon after we sat down. Overall I felt this place was a factory. Massive menu, and little advice from the waitstaff, other than simple order taking. Food overpriced. The same dishes are 1.5x what they cost at comparable Japanese restaurants, although FuGaKyu does have a nicer atmosphere. Food was decent, not great. Overpriced, and portion sizes modest for the price. Not a lot of warmth or welcome. Won't return.
Good was very very good. We didn't have to wait long for our reservation. Everything was great.
The food was not very good. Service was extremely slow. Inside was cool.
Great food, attentive service, elegantly served, and fresh. Lovely atmosphere, we have been coming here for years and what is stunning is the consistency of quality. The owners have also invested in renovations to keep the restaurant itself fresh and comfortable, in addition to the freshness and quality of the food, making this place one of the few consistently great places in the Boston area with longevity to match its quality. We've eaten here at all hours -- day, night, weekday, weekend, small family dinners and large gatherings, regular days and special events, with locals and with out-of-towners -- and every single meal, no matter what the circumstances, in all those years has been consistent in terms of food quality and service. That makes this place a rare gem, in my opinion.
I have been to Fugakyu several times in the past. I wanted to take my wife out for date night. We had a great evening and the food was excellent. A very nice selection of Sake, as well.
Great diverse menu. Good quality. Lots of space.
Food was okay, not great. The steak in the sukiyaki was fatty. The most irritating thing was that they were very resistant to giving us medium sized bowls. We shared sukiyaki and they gave us tiny bowls to eat it in. Apparently they aren’t happy if you share it. Had to practically beg for larger bowls. We will likely not return although have been there many times over the years.
Good food. Good service . 4 of us Sat in a booth with the sliding doors - very cool. We will go back.
Nice place but very noisy.
Food amazing as always
I wish I had the nerve to be more adventurous
pork gyoza light and delicious, the seabass was off the chart and the himachi kama perfect.
shisimi very nice too
you wont be disappointed
This is my 6th time here — most were average; two were good. Tonight’s was so disappointing I will never go back. Completely uninformed server. Sashimi and spinach so cold they shouldn’t have been served; the wine by the glass was clearly last night’s bottle and the manager refused to pour from a fresh bottle.
$130 for two people. Infinitely better sushi all over town, and better service. (This was a freezing Tuesday at 5:45 with an empty restaurant so it wasn’t the crowds.) obviously they’ve got a lock on Brookline and don’t need to try.
This was an elegant tasty Japanese meal, with a very pleasant private environment, and excellent service
It was my moms birthday. Food was terrible. Table was uncomfortable and the service was the worst I’ve experienced in ages
Great service, SUPERB food! We'll be coming back!
I have been here many times over the years, and it never fails to provide exactly what I am looking for. The ambiance is unlike any other local sushi place, their food is top-notch, and their service is always delivered with a smile.
We had made reservations at their website and requested a quiet table and informed them via the website that it was our anniversary. When we arrived, there was no indication that anything other than the time of the reservation was known to the staff. We got the next available table. It was OK, but what's the point of having a place on the reservation for comments if you're going to ignore them. So, that was mot disappointing and got the entire evening off on a really bad note.
The service and food were excellent. So, no issues there. However, when we received the check, I attempted to use a VISA dining debit card we had received as a holiday gift, and according to the staff, their antiquated payment system could not make it work. We have eaten here on multiple occasions, and there has never been a time that there wasn't an issue. It's always something..... And they never did acknowledge that they knew it was our anniversary.
I love this place. I go here religiously all the time. But after the way we were greeted on Friday night (December 27th smack dab in the middle of the holidays when you expect that extra bit of friendliness from a restaurant you frequent all the time) I’m having second thoughts. We went in around 9:30pm. We just stood there for a minute or so before even being acknowledged. They were chatting amongst themselves and wouldn’t give us the time of day. So rude, so dismissive and so not willing to take the time. I’m absolutely heartbroken that I was treated like this when I had an out of town guest.
Had sushi and it was fresh and delicious. I would highly recommend. Other people had teryaki salmon and chicken and really enjoyed that also.
We have gone for many years on Christmas Eve. This year while the food was still excellent, we were very disappointed with the extremely slow and disorganized service.
Lousy service and lousy expensive food
