About Fresh Salt
Our tables overlook the waters of the Connecticut River where the fresh river meets the salt of the sound. It’s a treasured and historic spot. In nature the most vibrant life happens where systems meet. These places are rich in life, and our restaurant reflects that lively diversity. We have a raw bar, a seasonally varied menu, and offer as much as we can from the farms, brewers, cheese makes and other food enterprises that are springing up around our region.
Fresh Salt delivers a dining experience that’s comfortable and relaxed. Our staff is here to be of service to you, our kitchen stands ready with fresh ingredients, a deep wine cellar and carefully crafted fusions of foods and beverages that bring tastes together in delicious and new ways.
We have tables by the fire, at the bar, and in season offer seating outdoors on the Fresh Salt Terrace.

Fresh Salt Ratings and Reviews
We met with our friends and we were all guests of Old Saybrook. Dinner was very good and so was breakfast. The servers and staff were very pleasant. However, one morning we had put in our order and over a 1/2 hour passed and we were told that they lost our order...
We have been to Fresh Salt on several occasions and it is always good. We both had the lobster roll and it was excellent.
The entree choices are few, but all that we have had were wonderful. The shrimp (sold by piece) are also a great choice.
We have been back and we will do so again
Views of the marina was the best part of the dining experience. The service right from the hostess to the waitress was below satisfactory. Waitress never asked how our dinner was, never filled our glasses of water after asking numerous times. The hostess cleared wrong side of table after clearly telling her which table settings to clear. We started with the calamari, it was delicious. I had the salmon, my wife had the cioppino both lacked flavor. I guess you pay the high price for the view, because the food and service wasn't worth it.
The ocean view and comfortable seating was just the beginning. We ended up eating every single meal here while in Old Saybrook not just our 20th anniversary dinner. They offered a clear broth clam chowder which was amazing and the tuna avocado burger was award winning. I would recommend this restaurant for a casual lunch or a romantic amd or special occasion dinner. We are major foodies and it is rare to have every meal this exceptional.
Fresh Salt is a very comfortable and pretty place and in the warm weather, there is outdoor dining overlooking the marina - very nice.
The food in my experience is always good, and the service generally good also (it can get a bit slow when the place is crowded).
My only complaint is that the menu is somewhat small, and there have been times when I don't find anything there that jumps out at me.
Service was fine. Decor is nautical theme with great woodwork since located on the water with a nice park nearby. The place offers spa, lodging, ball rooms, etc.
The food was a disappointment. Lobster roll was drowning in butter to the point that the bread disintegrated. My uncle had a shrimp dish, but the shrimp was tough and over cooked. Fiance had the brunch which was good but at $40 not including alcohol, equates to poor value.
Too bad, I wanted to like the place.
We arrived ready to order the lobster rolls for lunch (had them last fall, among the best on the coast). Walking through the Sunday morning brunch buffet room to get to the dining room, the spread was so impressive, it almost made us go for the buffet. This was our second time there - we'll be back again!
We came here on a Saturday night while on an overnight at the inn and spa. At 7:30 it was packed. We were seated very close to the next table. The food was good, but the staff was overstretched. We found ourselves looking for our server several times during the evening. I would not go here again for dinner on a busy night. We had a drink at the bar earlier and that was fun and cozy. I could see having a bar menu meal. We also returned the next day for breakfast and were well taken care of.
Dinner with friends on a Saturday night for the first time at Fresh Salt. The location is great. If the weather had been better, would have opted to sit outside. Inside the bar and dining area is cramped, especially with a Saturday night crowd. Our table was right outside the bar area and it was really quite noisy. Very difficult to carry on a normal conversation. Service was attentive but we were not hurried at all which was greatly appreciated. Great conversation is just as important as great food for an enjoyable experience. While the noisy environment made conversation challenging, our server did not did not hover and urged us to take our time. Most at our table enjoyed their appetizer but I found my duck taco quite dry. Our entres were good but not anything special. Everyone really enjoyed their desserts and specialty cappuccinos. The apple crisp was great.
We went here for Sunday brunch. The views are beautiful, as the restaurant sits on the water. However, we cannot justify $40 a plate for a buffet brunch. The brunch selections were fair, at best. A few tables of assorted items, dessert section left something to be desired. Lack of choices. You had to travel through the dining room, through the bar area, down a hallway and through a set of double doors in order to reach the brunch selections. We found that constant walking with full plates unacceptable, as the floor was wet and there were people hanging around the bar area. This setup where there is a constant flow of children and adults walking back and forth with full plates through crowded areas is inconvenient, dangerous and just unacceptable, especially for the price of $40 a plate. We gathered that the $40 a plate was to either pay this restaurant's mortgage or pay for the scenery. The food itself was lukewarm and could be found at any other lower-cost restaurant offering brunch. As mentioned above, there was definitely a lack of available food choices. Would NOT recommend this restaurant for the brunch, based on food, price and the location of the tables to the brunch area itself.
Management should really take into consideration where this brunch is located in proximity to the tables, as this is an accident waiting to happen.
It was our first time dining here as we live a fair distance. The food was outstanding. Our service was excellent (thank you Michael for being very helpful and attentive). And it was a very pleasant (and classy) surprise that Chef Cortesi came out to speak with customers. He was delightfully friendly and warm and shared wonderfully interesting tidbits about his cooking and the menu. This also included saying that we are welcome to contact him a few days in advance to let him know if we have special requests as he is happy to prepare those. We found this to be incredibly charming and quite frankly, a big wow. It really topped off what was a great dinner. And the place is really gorgeous. Thank you for everything!
We enjoyed a terrific supper on Friday, November 18th. The bar and restaurant was busy, but not crowded. The wine list offered strong American, Italian and French choices at all price points. Brilliant oyster selection and lovely main courses. I thoroughly enjoyed the pork osso bucco, my table mates equally enjoyed their fish stews. A lovely pear dessert topped the meal off. I live in NYC during the week and am delighted that Fresh Salt set a high bar for us in the lower Connecticut River.
My husband and I went out for dinner for our 30th Anniversary. We've been to Fresh Salt a few times in the past and remembered how wonderful the food was. The waitstaff was fantastic! They went above and beyond to make us feel special. Everyone wished us a Happy Anniversary. The atmosphere is very romantic, with the fire blazing and the lights on the sound sparkling . My husband LOVED everything about his meal of Calamari, Rack of Lamb and really enjoyed his after dinner drink, Cafe Royal. I had the New England Clam Chowder (a little sandy), Harvest Salad, which was wonderful, Osso Bucco- was tender, but lacking a "Wow" flavor. For dessert, we shared Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Salted Caramel Gelato . I, again, thought it lacked a bit of something.
I think I need to add that I'm not a picky eater, I was hoping for something amazing and I didn't get it. Not the fault of anyone. Just my opinion. Would I recommend Fresh Salt to a friend? Sure! It's beautiful, the staff is wonderful and the food is good.
~As a side note, My husband said that the he would have enjoyed a scotch for his after dinner drink, but it was way over priced and opted for the Cafe Royal and wasn't disappointed.
We had a lovely lunch at about 2:00pm on a Saturday. The restaurant was quiet since it was the end of the lunch service. We sat at a round table in the corner with a nice view of the marina outside. All our meals were excellent. The crab cake was delicious as was the New England clam chowder. We got the sampler dessert which was a great end to the meal.
I would highly recommend this for any occasion. Very nice for couples or a family
Our most recent visit for brunch was the most memorable for me in terms of the food. There were several items on the buffet that I'd never seen before and none were a disappointment. Especially notable new (to us) items included monkey bread and ravioli with wild mushrooms and asparagus. The desserts were good, but too many focused on pumpkin and fall flavors with chocolate notably missing. Server Nancy was her usual outstanding self.
