Formaggio Grill Kailua
The interior is a warm and comfortable environment with welcoming tones of Tuscan reds and golds, decorated with the art of Ron Genta. Soft lowered lights cast aglow about the restaurant, reflecting off of the plush red stools and wooden friendship bar-style tables.
Achieving that perfect blend of "upscale" yet casual, Formaggio Grill is the "gathering place" for the Windward side. Come enjoy the good food, fine wine, and great friends at Formaggio Grill in Kailua.
Always enjoy Formaggio Grill. Our little secret is to sit at the counter by the kitchen and chat with the Chef’s, enjoy a nice bottle of wine and one of their specials.
I come here often and have a great time. I bring different people each time and they have returned with others. Great service, amazing food, and bomb Sangria. Every time.
Would be better if server was better. Lots of waiting.
We were there on a Friday night when there was live music, which started out a bit too loud while we were still trying to eat and talk...but it was also the live music that we really enjoyed and this is what kept us at the place until they closed.
This was our first AND LAST experience at Formaggio grill. The inexperienced staff did nothing to improve the missteps of the night .
- they ran out of the marlin fish special right after I ordered;
- they ran out of the white wine I ordered (reisling). Our server apologized and said a shipment of that wine was coming in tomorrow!?!
- my friend ordered the burger, with avocado ($2 extra for the avo); which was undercooked, almost raw (I swear I heard that burger moo). When they brought the burger back, there was no avocado except they didn’t forget to add the $2 to our bill!
- I ordered the salmon since they ran out of the marlin and asked the waitress if it came with pasta (like the marlin special that they ran out of), she assured me it did but it didn’t (it came with potatoes). They brought me a side of pasta to make up for the error but then added a charge to our bill!
To make matters worse, both the server and floor manager kept trying to explain that they had a large (unexpected) group that ate all the fish and drank all the reisling - our reservation was at 730pm only a couple hours after they opened for dinner. Seriously, this was the worst dinner experience ever! We suspect that we witnessed a sinking ship that won’t be afloat for much longer.
Formaggio's has gone downhill from when it first opened and that is disappointing and sad. The tables, chairs and interior need a major renovation with a focus on an inviting atmosphere with color and accents. We need a high end restaurant for special occasions and times when we just want to go someplace other than casual dining. The food was great and it was so nice to find a place in Kailua that serves lobster. The bartender made sure we had the special drink we requested just the way we wanted it. The wait staff were welcoming and pleasant but for our special occasion it didn't quite meet our expectations.
The food was ok but not near worth the price they charged. Also, it was super hot inside. We noticed that the thermostat was set at 85! The only bright spot was the service was fantastic.
The house salad is a personal favorite to which I added grilled salmon, which was outstanding. They have a really good bar. They opened all the folding walls so it was quite nice and open.
The temperature was very warm and no moving air. Other than that everything was very good
AC was down but other than rhat so good
Although this restaurant has the potential to be a five star establishment, there are several things they need to work on to be considered recommendable. On a very hot and humid day, the comfort level of the air was beyond unacceptable. Honestly it was cooler outside. It is difficult to enjoy a meal when you are dressed up sweating profusely. Although we asked our server to be relocated under a ceiling fan, our request was ignored. It was so hot that the ice cubes in our water melted in minutes. The Caesar salad was subpar at best with wilted lettuce and over saturated dressing. The bruschetta; although sounded appetizing on the menu, came out cold and soggy. The rigatoni pasta dish on the other hand was surprisingly wonderful given the fact that after the first two courses we had limited expectations. It was served in a baking dish whereas all the flavors were baked in perfectly. I believe the main course is what saved this establishment from a one star review. We skipped dessert because we could no longer bare the heat. This establishment will only survive if they listen to their customers especially in a sleepy quiet town with limited dining options.
Ordered filet medium rare and it came out well done. They brought me another cooked properly but the rest of family was done eating by the time it arrived. They gave us free dessert to comp. sun was in our eyes for 15 min.
It was very nice.
Had mother's day dinner here. Food and service was great as usual.
Started off with having to stand around and wait to be seated even with the reservation at the reservation time. No consistent server helped us so we had to tell each server what the other was doing. They continued to hand hot food over our infant even though it was brought up and there were many other areas of the table to drop off plates. When good was brought out, we pointed out who had what and they would just drop the plate on the table and leave. At one point they even ran out of something as simple as Coke, and the replacement iced tea took almost 10 minutes to show up after a server was reminded. We had to flag down a server just to get water refilled. I almost forgot to mention that many of the seats in the restaurant are so broken in that our table as well as others were looking for seats that still had a cushion instead of a huge dip in the middle.
The wines were of course great. We had the burger and onion soup. It was good, but the town location seems to taste better. So-so this visit
Greeted with a smile. Cocktails were nice. Decent wine choices. Four of us had dinner. Ribeye, fish tacos and special Ono fish. Food came out hot and was nicely presented. Service was great. Waikiki prices.
The only complaint I have is my dinner partner complained about the rib eye special being inedible due to the piece of meat being nothing but fat. Our server just replied back that "she ate it laat night and it was fine"
This was very disappointing and caused an uncomfortable situation as my partner didn't want to make a scene after that.
He should have been offered a replacement item in the very least as there were 4 of us dining and the bill wasn't cheap.
Superb service, quiet and no tourists! The foodvwas outstanding, it has become our local datenight restaurant
Food is not up to par
The burger was a bit too salty.
Employees were very friendly and attentive.
I will definitely dine here again.
Food and service was great ‼️
Muscles are incredible! Beef bourguignon was incredible ‼️
Went on a weeknight. Pretty empty. Ordered French onion soup, it was warm, not hot. Cheese was Melted on the outside of the bowl. No oowy gooey cheese. Which is the whole point. Burger was just ok. Fish with mashed potatoes was also served lukewarm.
The fries were so so salted but the other food vere very good.
Excellent service on a busy night such as Valentines! Food was great and so is the wine!!
About average compared to other places in the area. Disappointing that they were out of their fish special at 7pm and the restaurant was practically empty on a Monday.
Celebrated a birthday and the server provided excellent service. Food was pretty good but the lobster was over cooked. A little disappointed with that but spending time with the family in a comfortable atmosphere made up for it.
Fantastic food and great service! Definitely worth going back to!
I love that this restaurant focuses on quality of food/wine and there are no TVs.
They were out of the first three bottles of wine we ordered. They must have been wiped out from the holidays and ill prepared for a 6:00 pm seating on New Years Eve. my uncle ordered their signature beef dish, which they also ran out of by 6:30 pm. The dishes we had were fine, nothing special. We really wanted to like this place, but had a bizarre experience with them not having items available. We expect better service and management for a dinner out on New Years Eve.
Was the first time going to this restaurant and we had to wait 20 minutes past our reservation and they were very understaffed that made our service very long. Food was good and drinks were strong.
I ordered the Garlic Ahi dish. So did my mother in law. We both ordered ours medium rare, and when they came out mine was cooked all the way through and hers was cooked about medium. It was also overly salted and the server didn’t provide our dishes at the same time as half the table (10 min delay).
Other food was okay. My husband had the spare ribs and he liked the sauce, my father in law had the steak but said it was served cold.
Our server, Cheryl, was great. Food was yummy but not hot when it arrived. Great wine selection. So happy you were open for Christmas dinner - thank you!
Our server was very rude and she gave us attitude all night with a smile on her face. Ruined our Christmas Eve Dinner. Every time we asked her for something it seemed as it made her irritated. Finally she came up to us and told her she has a 10 year old son waiting for her at hone and she will be leaving. Understood you have a kid at home, but it’s to be expected if ur working on Christmas Eve that it’s busy. We were in no rush, just trying to enjoy our time together as a family, but she made the night really not enjoyable. Finally we asked for the manager and as it is a small restaurant there is no manager. There was only the owner. Now, let me explain we were not asking for free food. But after his poor excuse of him making the server work because they were short one server was nothing we needed to hear. She was rude, she was not friendly, she ruined our night, didn’t come to get us refills for about 12 minutes or check on us and all her had to say was sorry it was his fault for making her work and all he did for our bill was take off one bread and the kids spaghetti! Big deal, we still ended up paying $200 for crappy service and a poor excuse for why. Sorry this restaurant is a no go for me anytime in the future.
Go there often. It’s a Great hangout, simple menu and good service even though it was Xmas eve.
We ate here on Christmas Eve and had reservations. We were sat at the bar top which we didn’t like but was understandable because there were a lot of larger party’s tables set which occupied most of the tables.
Food was amazing, a little expensive but really good food.
Drinks were really good too. Try the white sangria.
Food and service excellent but live music needs turned down 40% because the noise prohibits conversation. My teen (in the industry and is a food runner at another local restaurant with live music) agreed it is too loud
Always good food and drinks
Expensive. Limited menu. Wine menu was bigger than food. Don’t recommend taking kids.
