Japanese
Flesh & Buns Covent Garden, from the team behind Bone Daddies and Shackfuyu, is located within the bustling Seven Dials area in Covent Garden. Inspired by Japanese izakayas, roughly translated as a pub or place designed for informal eating and drinking, Flesh & Buns is the first restaurant in London to specialise in gua bao buns (DIY filled steamed buns).
Below street-level, the restaurant has a bar area offering bar dining for up to 10 people, serving a variety of sake brands and a diverse range of cocktails including the signature Frozen Yuzu Margarita, alongside the restaurant’s varied sharing food menu. Draped fabric ‘noren’ screen curtains surround intimate dining booths and transport diners to an authentic Japanese drinking den experience – bookable and ideal for groups of friends or colleagues meeting for lunch, dinner or Flesh & Buns’ ever-popular Sunday Brunch.

We were sited in the middle part of the restaurant, where annoying lights on the ceiling make your dinner experience like being in a hospital. The food was okay, but not worth it for the price.

Korean fried chicken wings are a must. The crispy piglet belly was nice but crispy. The greeting staff as you walk in could smile more.

Great place to taste some Japanese food. Tables are a little close for my liking and food was being passed over my head due to this. Wine list is pricy but good value on food.

The second time here, this time for a leaving dinner for a work colleague. He ordered the short beef ribs and I the ribeye steak. Both with vegetable rice in the hot bowl.
Simply AWESOME food and good service throughout. No room for dessert but managed a few cheeky Arahi beers instead.

Summary:
No cloakroom so your coat is hangover over your chair and people are pushing it off as they walk past because the tables are rammed so close together.
Sushi is average at best (go to Sticks n sushi instead)
The s’mores dessert is also disappointing - lacks flavour and not great value.
Won’t be returning.

I would have preferred to have been given the option of a proper table. The bar wasn't that comfortable and the communal table is super awkward. There was a free table for 4 and should have been offered that since it was late and it was progressively getting emptier

The good: Enjoyed the food and overall vibe of the place. Would recommend the pork belly and duck bao, as well as the chicken wings.
The bad: Found the service so poor that I'm not sure I would go back - especially given the price tag. Our table was seated for 20 mins without anyone coming by the table to take drink orders or explain the menu. When our server did take our order, she forgot to take drinks and we had to call her back. Staff seemed stretched thin - it was a busy Thursday evening but the restaurant wasn't packed. Dishes were put on the table in a rush, without telling us what each one was. Meat for bao arrived without bao, bao arrived without the veg garnish platter. Our single order of gyoza arrived twice. Two different servers confused a beef rice bowl and a veg rice bowl and gave us a pretty unconfident answer about which was which. No drinks refreshes were offered and no one checked to see how we felt about the food. Might have been an off night, but I think you can find similar izakaya for the same price point with more attentive staff.

Really delicious cocktails and food, great service and good portions. We were full up and couldn't manage pudding. The Korean chicken wings were to die for! Best I've tried. Highly recommend for a date, dinner with friends, I think even my kids would like it there.

We came for my partners birthday last week and it was amazing! Food was absolutely delicious, the service was arguably the best I’ve had in London yet. Only complaint is the place is very jam packed inside and was very very warm, almost uncomfortably so. Not a dealbreaker though and we’ll definitely be back! Highly recommend for birthdays!

I visited Flesh and Buns for the first time recently for a friends birthday. We were running late on a saturday evening due to train problems, but the receptionist at the restaurant was so kind and understanding and made us feel very welcome. We all really enjoyed the food (wished we ordered more but had run to catch a show), everything tasted amazing. Our waitress was also very kind, welcoming and attentive. Would definitely visit again soon!

This was my second visit. Very disappointed this time. Food didn’t taste as good as previous time especially the aubergine with miso
Another dish took 45 mins to arrive.
Other diners were experiencing the same problem.
The mushroom dish that was so late was not charged however all we got was a small pile of mushrooms. This did not justify the cost of the dish

Delicious food! In particular the duck bao and pork belly. Sashimi was thick cuts and delicious/fresh too. S’mores was fun too - melt yourself over coal!!
Nice decor and atmosphere. We had a lovely waitress.
They also remembered to bring the dessert with “Happy Birthday” written on it for my friend.
Will definitely be returning and recommending to others.

Food was pretty good but it was completely overshadowed by the incredible lack of good service. Not a good experience and will not be back. The waitress basically threw our plates onto the table before running off and when I asked for tap water instead of bottled water, she rolled her eyes at me. To top it off my boyfriend got his main course 20 minutes before I did so his was cold by the time mine arrived as he obviously didn’t want to sit and eat alone. How can service be so terrible.

Overpriced for what it is. As much as the food was good enough there is no excuse to charge 16 pounds for a lonely little slice of salmon on a plate which comes with nothing as you are supposed to also buy 2 buns and later on lego your own meal.

Current tendency in London to stuff as many people as possible in a restaurant is accepted though begrudgingly in a cheap places, chains and markets. However, when you prepare yourself to pay bit more to enjoy better cuisine and ambience you do not expect to be shoved on a communal table in between other people and being given less then 2 hours slot.

So what do we have in the end? We had our dinner in less then an hour and rushed out as it was impossible to talk having strangers shouting in our ears as we were seated super close to each other. Our bill was 80 pounds for a main, a shared starter and one drink each. I suggest going next door to Seven dials market and have the same food in the same atmosphere for third of the price.

Dear Ekaterina, Thank you for your review. It saddens me to read that you left disappointed on your recent visit at Flesh and Buns. Unfortunately due to the success and a large number of bookings we can't always allow extra flexibility on the seating time. I'd suggest coming back to try our amazing 3-course Pre-theatre menu available daily until 18:45 pm for only £24 per person. We look forward to welcoming you on another occasion so we can manage to fully exceed your expectations.

I visited in a group of 3 on Saturday for a birthday lunch. The service was pretty good.
We shared the Korean wings (which could have been hotter), edamame and prawn dumplings.
For the main event, we chose the fried chicken, duck and pork to make our bao. They were all good - again, could have been warmer. But we did all really enjoyed these!
A lovely touch was them bringing out some mochi on a decorated plate for the birthday girl, even though we didn’t order pudding!
Overall, I didn’t think it met up to the hype but I did enjoy the bao!

The service from one server in particular was shocking, double standards with the table next to us. Got served undercooked chicken which they tried to give back to us even though one server agreed with us that it wasn’t cooked enough. Food in general was disappointing, I’ve been to the one in Oxford Circus and that was far superior
