Outstanding service. Fantastic location. Great View overlooking the harbour.
However, the interior is plane outdated and dull. No ambience.
You do not create a cozy atmosphere when you are serving a fixed menue and you only have the table for two hours.
Then you create a busy environment as you have parties coming and going during the first 4 hours.
But you of course maximize your profits.
Pricelevel did not match the quality of the food.
The food was well prepared but unimaginative and somewhat plain.
Although I am no expert, it was clear that the wine card was extremely limited.
I noticed that the management of the five sails has gone on vacation for the next 2 weeks.
I hope you are going to Copenhagen to try out restaurants with the same price level. You will be both inspired and surprised.
The cocktails started our evening. Very delicious and unique. The meal was fabulous. Duck was so juicy and tender. Lamb was exceptional and tastefully prepared. The soufflé was outstanding. Well worth ordering it ahead of time. The service was first class. We are always so happy with this restaurant.
Food there was really nice! I love foie gras the most and the Alberta beef also tasty and fresh! But the waitor who severed us was not very enthusiastic.
A truly memorable meal. For ambiance, service and food this restaurant is five star. The seafood dishes were sublime however the tenderloin was probably one of the best my husband has ordered and that's his usual choice from a menu. We would highly recommend this restaurant and can't wait to return.
The view is fantastic and the food is even better! Don't miss a chance to experience the Chef's outstanding creations. I can't believe we've never been to this local gem.
We dined at Five Sails on this Christmas Day evening. It was simply fantastic.
The food was out of this world. Chef Ernst Dorfler continues to have the magic touch that has always set him apart as a Vancouver favorite.
The charming, unpretentious, unobtrusive service overseen by wonderful Gerry Sayers who adds a gracious style to the dinner service.
The guitarist was perfect. Just adding enough upbeat music in the background. Most of all we love that diners can hear each other talk. Christmas touches of crackers with silly hats, jokes, riddles all added to the festivities!
Other restaurants should take a page out of the “Five Sails” book. Simple quietening carpet, tastefully upholstered, comfortable “armed” dining chairs. Gorgeous starched tablecloths, simple candle light and flowers added to the twinkle of the room. All this topped off by the incredible harbour and “sail” views.
The extensive, well chosen, worldly wine list attracts Vancouver wine lovers having reasonably priced options along with very high end ones. Something for all budgets.
This was truly a magical dinner for our knowledgable, food loving guests on this 2018 Christmas Day .
We had a wonderful Christmas dinner with friends. Service was excellent - friendly and professional. Food was delicious...several uniquely prepared and served smaller dishes. Good choice of great entrees. Very enjoyable.
The staff at Five Sails went above and beyond to make my boyfriend and I’s anniversary memorable. Definitely coming back to spend any special occasion here.
Thank you so much Five Sails!
After the taxi that I'd booked to take my wife and I for her birthday meal was a no-show, I was worried that it'd totally throw off our timeline, but a quick call to the restaurant explaining the situation took care of it (we were only 15 minutes late in the end.)
The service was excellent and the staff were very understanding and courteous about the situation. When we arrived we were immediately made to feel welcome.
The food was absolutely superb - real fine dining, priced appropriately and definitely worth it. The atmosphere was pleasantly relaxed despite the place being so busy, and we never felt that we were being ignored at any time; the staff really know what they're doing.
Highly recommend the Five Sails, and will definitely go back.
Great food, great service. Not a single bad dish. The chef provided excellent food choices and beautifully presented. Thanks for making my little girl feel special in her birthday.
The view almost matched the excellent one we had from our harbour view Pan Pacific hotel room. We had booked during a quiet season and at a quiet hour (6:00) and enjoyed a tasty meal with very attentive service.
We were delighted to discover this lovely restaurant so near our hotel. The service and ambiance are topnotch and the food is creative and delicious. We started with local caviar, then I had the roasted veal tenderloin and hubby had the duck breast. Finished with the souffle and the banana mousse. We will definitely return next time we are in Vancouver!
This was our second visit to celebrate my daughter's birthday and both times we were exceptionally well taken care of. Gerry Sayers met us at the door and guided us to our requested window seats . View was superb, restaurant ambiance was great. Service was really super. Joseph took care of our table and his service was excellent. He was very knowledgeable and explained the menu and wine list. And our main dishes were served by the chef who explained our order to us. My daughter had the veal dish and I had the lamb. And because it was a birthday, my daughter had a small piece of rum and raisin cake with a candle which Joseph lit for her. All in it was elegant dining which we loved very much. Prices are comparable to other dining places, but service is par excellence at Five Sails. I would recommend it to anyone.
This was our second visit to Five Sails in about 2 years. Both times we were very pleased with the consistent high quality of food, absence and service. And, of course the spectacular view which we were fortunate to enjoy from a window table both times.
As I mentioned when I was there on Friday night, we used to go to Yew when we wanted a worry free dining experience ie. consistently good food, wine list, service, ambience; so much so that in August of this year, we and 18 good friends celebrated our anniversary dinner there. However, at our last visit in October we were very disappointed by the food and seating service. It was an important evening because we were entertaining out of town guests. I was so displeased, I wrote a letter of complaint. For this reason we are very happy to have rediscovered The Five Sails and look forward to many more visits.
The food and presentation is top-notch. This is exactly what it is, very high end dining. The selection was excellent and the service professional, courteous and timely. You get exactly what you pay for. Brilliant for any special occasion.
A first class place to dine
The duck dish was exquisite! My husband loved the lamb. Perfect for a winter night with a sparkling view. The staff all wished my husband happy birthday, so thoughtful. We liked it so much we bought gift certificates for family.
Lovely evening. Excellent meal with perfect service. Especially the bartender (Irish).
The restaurant is in a hotel, and has to be taken in that context. It's a quiet, serene, and controlled environment. If you have a (rare) window table, it can also be a wonderful view, depending on the time of year.
The service is very good, total 5-star level, without being either doting or obsequious. They really hit the right note.
One always should be restrained in reviewing food on a one-visit basis, but our meal was very good. It wasn't Michelin three-star, but it was very good. I had venison (a favorite of mine, hard to find), and it was rare and lovely. The set-up was minimalist, which was fine. My partner's scallops was a busier plate, but attractively presented.
It's not a criticism to say that this is not cutting-edge -- it's a high-profile, hotel-located, premium venue. I think for the location, they do a very good job.
Our evening was awesome. My wife’s 50 birthday dinner. Appetizers were superb. Wine excellent and main course of lobster and Wagyu New York excellent. Flambay for desert over the top. Fine dine at its best!!!
Over all we had a great evening; the food was excellent. but a bit short of volume for a person with a healthy appetite, particularly because of the very high cost. We had a great table by the window, and really enjoyed the panoramic view. The service was excellent. We would not go back for a "regular" dinner, but would certainly consider it for a special anniversary or birthday.
Food quality and presentation was excellent. Very tasty and prepared to our exact request. Hostess and server attention was outstanding. Ambience was excellent with view of harbour - the best in the City.
Five Sails is a very special restaurant.
The warmth of the owner and her staff makes Red Sails even more so.
The setting is impressive and the food service was good. Beyond that, there was nothing special or exciting about the experience. The food was average for a high end restaurant in both tast and presentation. Portions are on the small side. For example, the $24 scalop appetizer came plated with 2 scallops.
While I had booked the restaurant for my wife’s birthday, other than the host at the door, not one other of the many servers we had acknowledged the occasion and nothing special was offered.
Our bio with tip was $225 for 2 persons.
Located inside a hotel but has its own character, built on the waterfront views of macnificent Vancouver. Service is excellent, food arrangement very good and an atmosphere of high quality.
The food is good but lacks the extra touch of an ambitious chef. The salad opener dish was arranged well but contains some black leaves that should have met the garbage bin. The taste was not good.
The beef main course was made well and was worth its price but no spark of genius was there.
Excellent restaurant, definitely an upscale setting. Amazing staff, and fast service. Slightly on the expensive side of the spectrum; worth it if its a special occasion.
Exceptional meal in an incredible space. The sweet breads are perfection. The foie gras appetizer was delicious. The smoothest mouse I've ever had. The duck was great and the veal tenderloin with the lobster ravioli was out of this world. The service was impeccable.
Very impressed with everything. It made for an incredibly romantic dinner.
Were there for our anniversary. Had a fabulous meal..great service and view of the harbour. The wine menu is overpriced compared to other fine restaurants ...there were at least 3 wines I'd seen substantially cheaper elsewhere.
Superb ambience , the location is the best in Vancouver, on the water and and great views of the harbor, the decor inside is also very elegant . Food was top notch , we were a group of 9 celebrating a special occasion and it was truly a memorable experience
Amazing meal with great service! I will definitely go again.
The first thing you notice is the view. Great view of the water. The wait staff were terrific and very professional. The head waiter was helpful without being chatty, was attentive, and was knowledgeable about the food preparation. The other staff including the hostess were also well trained. All of the food items we had--the scallops, lamb, and sea bass--were excellent. The head waiter was helpful with wine selections and the local B.C. shiraz I had was wonderful. Overall, this was a terrific dining experience. Comparable to a Michelin star restaurant.
You get a waterfront view of North Vancouver from the restaurant and get to watch seaplanes come and go during day light hours. The food is great and the tasting menu is pretty creative in my opinion. The service is outstanding as the wait staff is attentive and make sure you are taken care of. Even the owner will come by to check in on you. I wish there is a better cocktail selection (more options) but that's not really the main point of this restaurant. I don't drink wine but from my friend's comment, they seem to be nicely stocked and of good quality.
The view at Five Sails is magnificent. That is the primary reason to go. Vancouver sets a high bar on food variety and preparation. The menu and food deliviered at Five Sails is adequate to good on the Vancouver scale. But the service that we had was perfunctory and rather inattentive. The restaurant was only half full, but our server still could not provide service that was anywhere near what one expects of a “top tier” restaurant in Vancouver. The glass of wine I ordered was proferred at the end of our meal. Rather a disppointment, overall. Spend your high end food dollars where you will be excited, like at Blue Water.
This experience was phenomenal. They proprietor is very attentive. The serving staff is excellent. The food... OMG... Beyond words... Excellent wine list. Great view. Very romantic. Highly recommended!
Delicious food excellent views of water, Lions Gate bridge and mountain. Service was excellent. We did enjoyed our time and comfort food.
We were treated in such a welcoming manner. Everyone was very professional and well informed. The only disappointment was that the dress code was too casual. In fact there was a table next to us where the clients were wearing a hoody. It is such an eloquent surroundings that one would hope for a code that at least required a shirt.
Fresh and tasty food with character. Excellent service.
Very good food, nice view.
Was disappointed that pretty much every desert had some sort of dairy component. Yes, could order one and eliminated the cream or ice cream, but not very good value.
Non dairy coffee creamer was not available either.
I asked for non dairy creamer and server didn't know if they had any. I responded if it was available I'd have coffee with my group, if not, I wouldn't. Three coffees were brought for my companions, and not even a word to me... I was ignored. Finally I called to a server to ask if there was mint tea - but the staff didn't suggest anything while bringing the coffees.
A large portion of the entrees also were heavy with dairy. When I asked the server for help to chose the non dairy options, her respond was pretty lukewarm.
Quality of meal was excellent, but interaction with staff was pretty average. We all came away with the same feeling that it was a one off visit and would not recommend this place to our friends.
