Five Horses Tavern - Davis Square Ratings and Reviews
The cornbread app. was really delicious and could almost be a desert. Creme brulee was the best I ever had. Our steak was quite tough and I would not recommend that. Maybe we should have know better because it was not a tender cut. Fried chicken was very good the sides of potatos and macaroni were ok . That being said we still cleaned out plates. Service was great. The servers had great personality and humour.
We went to Five Horses for the first time prior to a Peter Wolf concert in the Somerville Theater. I'd like to say first our server (I wish I remembered her name) was just outstanding. Came by just often enough and was engaging and nice, and just kept things rolling. Made good food and beer recommendations. My friend and I both had the standard burger and it was great. The beer list is expansive, both on tap and bottles. They had some great German beers on tap + lots of craft beers. All in all it was great - my first time there.
We went to the restaurant on the Saturday night of Parents’ Weekend at Tufts. The place was packed which is a great thing for the establishment and the local economy but I think that they may have been unprepared for the big turnout. For example, the two dishes that members of our group wanted to try (the fried chicken & the ribs) were no longer available yet the dish that I had (pulled pork with grits) was really good. In addition, the chicken tenders appetizer was delicious and filling.
The overall cost of the meal was reasonable and the portions were generous.
This restaurant was certainly good enough to revisit.
They have a large beer selection, although their waiters/waitresses are not able to recommend a beer due to lack of knowledge. If you know what you like, this is the place to grab a beer with your friends and enjoy great food. It is also a great weekend brunch spot!
Sorry to say, we had an awful experience-The noise level was ridiculously loud with head banging music we could barely hear each other to catch up. Also quinoa served with the salmon was so heavy with an over powering vinegar like flavor it was almost inedible...left a lot behind. :(
A plus was that the staff all seemed very pleasant!
Location in Davis Square is this bar/restaurant's greatest asset. Nearby to the Somerville Theatre and all of the other bars, restaurants and cafes in the square. It is an active social public square in America's most densely populated city. Excellemt bourbon selection, reminded me of Nashville, but expensive. Also excellent beer selection. The food is excellent, not too pricey, but not inexpensive either. There is a variety of seating styles. I wanted to watch the football game while I was there, and I did, but the video screens were very small and inadequate unless seated at the bar. Liked it, but would probably try somewhere else next time I'm in the square.
Went with a group for brunch. The french toast sticks are AMAZING. Everyone enjoyed their food; we all went around tasting each other's plates. Very friendly server. I've been here for dinner several times as well and the food is always amazing. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Davis Square!
A nice spot in Davis Sq. Busy and vibrant at 6p on a Friday. Three person party at hi top table near the front window. Great beer and drink selection. The potato tacos and the Cuban sandwich were delicious as was the white bean hummus. Brussels sprouts appetizer had a nice kick, but needed more Brussels and less bacon. Server was attentive and friendly.
We were a huge party of 12 for brunch and had absolutely no issues - the mimosa flight was ah-mazing, as was the sangria, bloody mary and the beer selection never disappoints! Our server was courteous, knowledgeable and had a great attitude - we never felt rushed and he checked in with us throughout the 2.5 hours that we were there! And this is why Five Horses Tavern will remain one of our top brunch spots in Davis Square!
We had a 2 year old with us and I wouldn't say it was an ideal place for families with young children; no children's menu and no activities provided to keep the little one entertained. It is definitely a hip, young-professional's type of restaurant located in the heart of Davis Square..
Handmade pretzel is great, mustard a bit spicy but delicious, and the boursin-like dip is very good. I had a kinda Cuban sandwich which was a nice interpretation of the sandwich, and my companion had the Tavern burger, cooked to perfection and delicious with cheesy grits.
Five Horses is a decent Davis Square spot. I was a little bummed out the most recent time I went (this past Saturday) because my boyfriend and I asked for a high top next to the window and were told they were reserved for parties of 3 or more, and shortly afterwards a couple was seated at the same table, alone. Our server was a little inattentive but he had a LOT of tables so that's forgivable. Overall nothing to keep me from going back, but worth noting.
Wonderful ambiance! Make sure to notice the cool chandelier in the entrance. We went for a pre-theater dinner and chose the perfect place! The grilled fish tacos were yummy and the perfect amount to eat after sharing the pan roasted brussels sprouts and beyond fantastic cornbread The cornbread could basically be your dessert :-) and everyone who works there seemed happy and they all worked as a team! Will definitely go back :-)
I had a great dinner with my friend here, but it was kind of an odd group the night we went and the service was really slow for drinks. Also my ex boyfriend walked in which was awkward*. There was a random woman downstairs who was barking....
*I know the restaurant cant control that but I hope it made someone laugh.
