Five has been a good choice for before a performance. This time something happened. There was a disconnected communication between the kitchen and the service staff. Things changed after an order was placed much to the server's chagrin. Things were added that were not advertised and could trigger food allergies. We're told that Five is closing shortly to convert itself into a "Mediterranean" themed restaurant. My feeling is that the kitchen staff needs slapping around to improve the customer experience, i.e., the service staff and kitchen staff on the same page.
Well I only dined alone at FIVE restaurant, the ambiance was spectacular, the food and service was great as well, and also it was a little quiet when I get there. I worked in the hospitality industry, and I know how a great service goes. Thank you so much for a spectacular experience. I’ll see you soon when you re-open your business.
So I wish we had known that the waiter was on the way out... the food was not great and it's so sad because I love this place.
It was Mediterranean theme. Too many spices in the gnocchi and chicken. Salmon and steak were okay, only decent thing about the place. And the biscuits were delicious as always.
This was a sad way to go out chef. Disappointed.
Great, friendly service.
Five is closing soon, so this feels a little futile. I wasn't overly impressed, but in fact the dishes I ordered were tasty and well-made, and the service was very friendly. It didn't rise above that weird feeling of a restaurant in a hotel, though. Hotel restaurants are always a bit weird, and though this one was better than most, it still had that feeling of not quite being real.
All the information I could find about 5 said that it opened for dinner at 5:30, but on OpenTable, I was able to make a reservation for 5pm, which seemed kind of confusing. I was watching an afternoon and an evening play at Berkeley Rep. The first play ended at 4:30, and the next started at 7, so I really wanted to make sure I could sit down at 5 and have time for a leisurely dinner. They did actually open at 5, and we were able to sit down right away. Service was very prompt, and we had plenty of time to have three courses, enjoy the beautiful ambiance, and our delicious food. This worked out even better than I could have hoped for!
Attentive service; very good food; reasonably priced; a nice range of food options; we only had 90 minutes to eat because we were going to the theater. The staff was skillful in working within this timeframe.
Great quiet place to meet friends with decent food
I was disappointed with the food. We spent $500 on dinner and I only had two bites of my plate. The gnocchi was overpriced and it tasted awful, I dare the chefs to eat one of the vinegar tomatoes in my plate, the salmon was bland and the duck we send it back it was undercooked. Again We could not ‘ve b more disappointed. We never coming back to this place.
I booked the Five because of good reviews. In short- the server was very young, and acted it.
She had not been trained on how to open a bottle of wine. She did not know how to pour wine.
Our reservation was for 1:00 pm, and only after we ordered a first course, and had the wine,
did the server tell us that the kitchen closes at 1:30 and we had to order the entire order now.
Still being a good sport, we ordered. Of course, all the food came at once, and did not have
room on our table. The food was just ok. The french fries were old. For this lovely restaurant
sake, I hope this was a rare event. They should train their staff better. This server girl was
probably trained in a low end fast food place and has not elevated her skill yet.She also did
not have " good manners".
The decor of the restaurant, the table layout, lovely. I would give it a second chance- someday.
It was a great place to have lunch before going to Berkeley Rep. Only complaint was the use of plastic straws which are so bad for the environment!
Did not enjoy the food or service, was a very expensive mediocre birthday dinner.
Service was very slow and eventually they brought the wrong food. It was surprising how slow the service was as the restaurant was not busy. Food was not great either. Most things were just too salty
Went to Sunday brunch for mother's day, Great decor and good food.
It took at least half an hour for our salad to be brought out. Outrageously poor service on that score.
My wie's salmon was quite nice; my duck was underdone, tough, and just not very tasty.
I have no interest in returning to Five; we'd been there once before, IIRC, but it wasn't as poor an experience as Saturday's. Too bad, since it's so convenient for before a Berkeley Rep performance.
Wonderful service. The cheese biscuits are beyond amazing!! Could have made a meal on them alone.
Very good food with exceptional service Appetizers were good Try the Morrocan meatballs
Very clean and open space with fun wallpaper and lights. Sat on a padded bench seat that looked dirty and old though. Lunch menu is not nearly as interesting as the dinner menu appears. Mostly sandwiches and burgers that were decent. The saffron risotto tasted like white rice and the vegetables in it did not seem fresh. Great soup of the day. Our waiter was unfamiliar with the 'power lunch' special and initially suggested a dessert that was not part of the special. Sorbet was fantastic for dessert but the creme brulee was not fully set. Overall, nice staff and setting but disappointing food.
I must say we were disappointed with our Mother's Day visit. The environment is very pleasant and the dining room set up nicely with large windows facing the street. The waiter we had was not very attentive. We started by ordering cocktails which took over 1/2 hour to arrive. When we ordered our food, it took a very long time to get our meal. We ordered the beet salad which was very good, but the fruit and greens salad was very bland. When the main dish arrived, the chicken was dry. The duck was undercooked and when we sent it back, we noticed it returned with 2 less pieces! The Salmon was done well. Overall it was a disappointing experience and we would probably not return.
We came here for their Mother's Day Brunch. We love the ambiance and how easy it is to get to on BART. However, the brunch is pretty expensive for what you get! It's the most expensive brunch I looked at for the day. We still enjoy coming here, but not sure it's worth the price!
We booked a reservation here for Mother's Day and did not realize it was a buffet. This made the meal much more expensive yet the very generous and understanding staff offered it at a discount since it would have been very difficult for us to find other accommodations. They were very very nice to do this for us and the food was amazing. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and there was an amazing buffet with mimosas or Bloody Marys. Highly recommend for special occasions.
Horrible, horrible service. Most of our entrees were prepared incorrectly, and one was so undercooked as to be inedible. Could not get server's attention, even though the restaurant was not crowded. Some items we ordered never came and we finally gave up and told them to cancel since most people at the table had already eaten. The manager apologized and gave us a discount on the bill, but the celebratory dinner was ruined for our group. I have never been so angry after any experience at a restaurant. Would never consider returning.
Wonderful and innovative food and good service.
Five has a lovely interior, Art Deco style. Big windows and lots of light. Nice, large bar and always pretty full of people, which gives a nice vibe and air of fun. Our server was great, attentive and responsive. Food was quite good, and the service went smoothly and quickly, as we needed to get to a show. Brought parents, who can be picky and they were perfectly pleased!
Restaurant is old style which is fine. And parking garage across the Restaurant was vey convenient. But foods weren’t that good , they bring you big portions but nothing tasted good and fresh except for salad ! Wines by glass selection were poor and wine glasses was very ordinary and old like you see at Local Dinners.
Enjoyed a wonderful Saturday mid-day brunch with friends we hadn't seen in 20 years. Group of 8 ranged from 5 years to 70. We were seated at a comfortable table (lots of room around it), treated to drinks (new bartender training), and allowed to stay as long as we wanted. Great food options that ranged from healthy takes on standard brunch entrees to the full selection of lunches (hamburgers, sandwiches, and main course salads). Everyone was totally pleased with the well-prepared food (including the 5-year-old who scarfed down his French toast) and the friendly, unobtrusive service.
For the price just a very average meal. Would not recommend
We enjoyed our meal. It was served well and the server still got our check to us promptly so we could get to the theatre on time. We've eaten at 5 several times and are looking forward to additional new items on the menu. The salmon and duck entrees we had were delicious.
I had a notice form open table that I didn’t showed up, this is WRONG!
I was there with my husband, we had bacon omelet & avocado omelet!!!
Please call the restaurant & correct his information.
Decor was very plain and basic when the rest of the hotel was beautifully crafted. Seemed out of place, like a pop up.
Lovely setting. Food was excellent. The service was the issue. Our server was very pleasant, but first we had to hunt her down to come and take our order. When the food arrived for our table of 8, it arrived in bits and pieces - in fact, one person's dish came out almost 10 minutes after everyone else's. I've eaten here before, and this didn't happen, so hopefully, this isn't an ongoing issue.
Risotto was so-so - a bit dry and not very flavorful. Everything else was good.
Nothing distinctive. Watery soup. Bland dishes. Waitress was nice, overall seemed like kitchen was on automatic and not really paying attention.
Great service, beautiful room.
Food was at best ok. A middle eastern inspired dish that I should have known not to get but hummus sounded good. Hummus was terrible. Oily and inedible. Included sliced focacia that had been toasted or something to the point that it was more appropriate for wall tile than food. Service was abysmal. Ignored for the most part, and appetizers came with mains after 50 minutes. Can't recommend.
Five has a perfect Downtown Berkeley location. As a pre-theater spot, or close to BART when people are coming from multiple directions.
The waiter answered all our questions about the delicious vegan pavlova.
Great table. Great service. Great food. We were able to stay on for quite a while catching up with our out-of-town friends without anyone’s hovering over us to make us leave. Love this restaurant!!
Do you ever change your menu?! It seems not, so I am not tempted to eat there very often, even though the food is good.
