Fish Hopper - Kailua-Kona
A landmark (formerly the Ocean View Inn) and a local’s favorite Kona restaurant since 1934, the building housing The Fish Hopper has been beautifully restored to expand upon its spectacular ocean views. We proudly serve seafood from sustainable sources, harvested by methods that do not harm the environment.

We’re full time residents and enjoy Fishopper for breakfast. Fruits and vegetables are locally sourced and Chef knows how to make a WOW breakfast.
Service is excellent and eater glasses are filled on a regular basis as well as coffee and tea. Food arrives on time and tables are cleared promptly after eating. We don’t feel rushed to leave rather to enjoy “talk story” without having to look at dirty dishes!
Their breakfast Bloody Mary and Mimosa specials are legendary, omelette are excellent and my favorite is the Hawaiian Sweetbread Fresh Toast topped with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and macadamia nuts, yum!
Sadly, with the Pandemic it is difficult for many businesses to stay open and Fishopper as well as many other restaurants in the downtown area will be closing until Christmas holiday.
We support small locally-owned business and definitely will return once the restaurant opens again.
I recommend Fishopper to those who visit Kona, great food in an open-air environment and a FABULOUS view of Kailua Bay
It was a complete and utter disappointment as we were not even served or offered a seat!
I set our reservation directly from the OpenTable app for 7:30pm @ approx. 6:20pm, I then received an e-mail confirming my reservation for the scheduled time, however, when we arrived at approximately 7:15pm, the host came over to us and I stated that we have a reservation for 7:30pm, he then asked us to wait and we were then approached by the, according to his name badge, Assistant General Manager.
The AGM stated that they were closed already and that they decided to close early that evening because it did not seem to be very busy. I then stated that we set a reservation online, why would the reservation system confirm our reservation if you were closing early and, at that point, I opened my e-mail to show him the confirmation I received via e-mail. He glanced at it and re-stated that they were closed already. I then explained that we traveled from our hometown of Waimea (approximately 40 miles away) for dinner at the Fishhopper and the AGM only shrugged his shoulders, he did not even apologize for this major inconvenience! Unbelievable treatment!
My friend and I that were planning to have dinner at the Fishhopper that night are frequent restaurant patrons to the Fishhopper over past couple of years. Their breakfast food is good and their service has been good but after that evening my friend and I will never patronize this establishment again! The Fishhopper has lost our patronage!
If I could give this restaurant a negative rating, I would!
Great meal and service with a beautiful view! Mom ho g with risotto was fantastic.
I have been going to this restaurant for the last 10 years. That says it all.
Always a great breakfast and great service.
Window tables always a treat to enjoy Kailua Bay view. Service is great as always, as is the food. A Kona favorite for us!
The huevos rancheros is a favorite. Good place to get breakfast and watch the world go by. Service is always friendly too.
Good place to eat with nice views and a breeze. Glad I went.
Our meal at the Hopper was excellent. Mahihi stuffed with crab and prawns—yum! The server was extremely attentive, the wine a very generous pour and delicious plus we had a sunset view table. Will return again and again.
Food, service, atmosphere was great.
Great place to eat in Kona.
Very good food and friendly service. Enjoy their huevos rancheros, which is hard to find in Kona.
It is always a pleasure & a treat to eat at the Fish Hopper. We went for our anniversary although we have also been there many other times. I had the triple prawns (really love the coconut breading) with a side of Risotto. My wife had the Sand Dabs which are always great. Also had a good time shmoozing with Joel.
Nick the bartender was our waiter. He was professional.the New York did nothing t call me with vegetables. This would have been an easy add on. The New York was not trimmed lots of gristle and sinew. The wasabi potatoes could have used a bit more wasabi. The Creme brûlée would have been better if it had a bit more toasr
Great service and amazing food due to COVID it was more quiet and less people there but still amazing service and loved our waitress she was great and very helpful. Amazing experience for me and my other half first time here
Well done to keep physical distance and protect from covid. The food was very good. The clam chowder lived up to its billing as was the stuffed monchong special. We were full so didn't feel too hurt not being offered dessert as we were the late seating
Ahi Poke tasted like old fish... Filet Mignon was amazing... Chicken Alfredo was delicious.... Chicken Parmesan was okay.
Waitress forgot order five minutes after she took it... She forgot we were there and never asked to refill our sodas we had to ask each time... I believe her name was Caroline.
Margaret is an awesome waitress.
Food hot and as ordered.
Perfect spot complete with ocean view.
Hands down the best meal we had on our trip.
Our server Holly was amazing and took really good care of us. She played a big role in our experience. The gentlemen who helped her tidy our table and keep our drinks full was also a big role and we appreciated his attention to detail and service.
The food was amazing and our cocktails were delicious. The bottle of wine we ordered paired perfectly with our meal and was reasonably priced. Overall this restaurant is a hidden gem on Ali’i drive especially in these quiet times.
We will definitely be back again during our next visit.
The view of the ocean is great. The food is excellent and the service was great. It was a very good experience.
Great views, wonderful atmosphere, and very nice waitstaff to complement our delicious meals!
Another great dining experience. One of our favorite restaurants. Thanks Sam.
Love their food and view of the ocean. I only marked quiet for sound because restaurants here just opened because of COVID-19. Normally this is a fun upbeat restaurant.
We enjoyed a great meals and had a great waitress. Good Mai Tais!
Good selection of food. Fish special was prepared very well. Good drink selection. Prices a little high but a good value. View of the bay included for free.
First dining experience since Covid-19. Everything was handled as required to make it a safe environment. And always friendly staff. Missed them while they were closed.
hollandaise sauce was not very good, watery and did not taste goods
rest was great
One of my favorite spots on the BI.
So glad the HOP is back open. The staff and food were just great. Our dinner with friends was wonderful and we can't wait to be back for our usual weekend breakfast too.
Awesome staff, Excellent service, Delicious food and very clean and safe.
Friendly service. We had the fish and chips (fries served in a little frying basket) and the New York steak (with wasabi mashed potatoes), with guava cake for dessert. Pricey, but good food with an excellent view. The noise from the street was a little loud, even for a Sunday evening, but otherwise a good dinning experience.
So glad that the Fish Hopper is open again! Such delicious food and friendly staff, plus, the awesome view! We hadn’t eaten out since quarantine began in mid-March, so what a treat to just get out again, and the Fish Hopper was a great first place to go. They are super organized, and have adapted well to all the new social distancing rules. The full menu was offered, as well as several specials. I loved the monchong risotto, and my husband loved the fish trio. Don’t forget to get a dessert. You won’t regret it! We tried the Kona coffee cheesecake - divine! Get out there and support our local businesses.
Full menu available. Great service. Terrific views. Celebrated 50th wedding anniversary there. Glad we did. So good to see them back in business.
Go support Fish Hopper! Always good food, and they are so appreciative to get your business during this first week of re-opening. You won’t be disappointed!
We were there the first night when restaurants started a soft opening from the pandemic. Everyone had protective face masks on, and were cleaning menus right after use. You need to wear a mask when entering and leaving the restaurant. Great food as usual and it was so nice to be out again after 10 weeks. It felt great to have a little normalcy back again. Thank you
As always ... great food, great view, great service.
Always a friendly welcoming staff and clean environment. With an open plan design and the ocean just across the street it has a great ambiance. It’s never too loud to have a conversation no matter how busy the restaurant is. Food is really good and we have our favorites. We especially like having breakfast there. Great pancakes and one of the few restaurants that still offers Spam on their menu. We’ve never been for cocktails there, but I’m sure it’s a great place for that. Roomy, fresh and a friendly fun staff. It’s one of our local favorites.
We had a birthday dinner at the Fish Hopper. We started with the Crab Tower, which was tasty, but not exactly a tower. Both of our main courses were served hot and were delicious. Family style, so thur restaurant was on the noisier side, but we enjoyed the overall atmosphere.
Aloha Peter, mahalo for choosing to celebrate your birthday with us! We're delighted you enjoyed your visit with us and we greatly appreciate your recommendation! We wish you a Happy Birthday and all good things in the coming year!
We ate dinner here twice this week, and went for happy hour another night. Great food and awesome service.
Good choice. Friendly staff! Nice location. Good value. Will return.
Aloha and mahalo for your awesome review! We look forward to seeing you again!!
Food was good, service was very good however the price point did not match the ambiance. Gourmet food prices in a tourist style restaurant. Laminated food pictures were also out of place.
Aloha and mahalo for your review, Marlene! We greatly appreciate your feedback!
It starts with a beautiful view and ambiance, and then is made better with intelligent, attentive and very sweet service and then comes the delicious food. And the finish is you can expect consistency for every single visit. This is our first choice in Kona, and on the Island.
Aloha Marty!!! Mahalo for your amazing review! You are always so kind!!! We always look forward to your return!!
