Fish Hopper - Kailua-Kona
A landmark (formerly the Ocean View Inn) and a local’s favorite Kona restaurant since 1934, the building housing The Fish Hopper has been beautifully restored to expand upon its spectacular ocean views. We proudly serve seafood from sustainable sources, harvested by methods that do not harm the environment.
We love to honor our Veterans & Military! Please let us know if you are one, upon arrival.

Generally, our food and service was good, but the risotto seemed under-cooked. Our waitress was friendly. The restaurant seemed adequately staffed unlike many restaurants in Kailua area.
We've eaten dinner at Fish Hopper on many Kona visits. The entrees have always been good. This visit was no exception. Their cocktails are over the top and pricey. We stick with wine or beer. And despite how good the main dishes are, dessert often disappoints.
It didn’t start out well the person at the front was a little grumpy but he ended up Redeeming himself in the end .
You might walk by this restaurant thinking it’s just another one of those mediocre food places,on the Kona strip. Forgo all the other options, step inside, try to capture a seat by the open windows to enjoy the breeze and ocean vista. But the best is their food! Check the online menu. They have offerings for everyone’s taste. Their fish options are varied ( unlike some restaurants that use the same type of fish in every menu option) and very fresh.
We ordered the poke appetizer that was perfectly prepared with a combination of sauces and a bed of crispy wontons. For entree’s we enjoyed coconut shrimp, mani-mani crusted with macadamia nuts, and yellow fin ahi tuna. Each one of these plates was outstanding and beautifully plated.
Cocktail menu offers too many options to list here but if you are brave try the 80 oz. captain margarita. Martini lovers will enjoy all the variations. Great wine list as well.
Very good place for dinner. Loved the gluten free options! Very pleasant staff.
This place consistently DELIVERS A GREAT EXPERIENCE. I keep not wanting to give it five stars because of my experience at San Francisco fine dining top notch restaurants that I consider five stars however when I ask myself about flavor, presentation, freshness and quality of ingredients, service, ambience and all the pieces that we consider in a dining experience, I can’t not give it five stars. While it does not fit my image for five stars, it really really is. Let’s say casual dining on the water at its best.
Excellent food with great staff. The owner goes to every table to say hi. Filet mignon you could cut with a knife.
Joel was a great server at our first Fish Hopper dinner. We went for my partner's 30th and it was an incredible dining experience - delicious food, nice atmosphere, but still laid back and fun. A little bit of a wait for a "window" table but worth it. Highly recommend their Toasted Colada drink. Not a lot of vegetarian options but they accommodated my vegetarian request with some amazing pasta!
It’s ok. Got the Mongfish I think is what’s it’s called. It’s good. Wife got the ahi poke. It’s good. Nothing to write home about really. And it’s a bit on the pricey side. Small plate of poke was over $20. In any case it was fine. I wouldn’t really recommend it though.
Sixth yearly visit to Fish Hopper but first post sunset dinner. Great setting, server overwhelmed by number of tables/guests. Traffic noise (loud cars with base music was disruptive), we sat in a back booth of the restaurant. City Noise Ordinance vs Enforcement (seemed like less than 6 vehicle were majority of disruption.
The food was good and the waitress was lovely but she was very busy. It took 20 minutes before she was able to come over to take our drink order.
Appetizer - house special fresh tuna nachos
Dinners- Maple Soy marinated skirt steak -
Over the top fabulous!
Ultimate seafood Pasta - Very
Desserts- Lilikoi cheesecake- SO good!
Chocolate Chantilly Cake - GF
Honestly it was not good. Didn’t taste chocolately. Poor texture. I’ve eaten many gf things. I bake it as well. This item should not be on a menu.
Everything but the chocolate cake was amazing.
We ate here twice during our stay in Hawaii. Once for lunch and once for dinner. Both times were very enjoyable. We made a reservation for dinner because we wanted an ocean view table. The fresh fish and house made salad dressing were delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. I would definitely come back.
Great food and service!! We will be back.
Great as always! Mahalo Joel !!!
Great food. Very good service. I had the local menu with an excellent cup of clam chowder.
The service was spectacular here! The crabcakes and the Parmesan crusted mahi-mahi were amazing. My husband had the lobster cioppino and said it was lacking some flavor but overall OK. The best thing was the passionfruit cheesecake!
The best fillet mignon I’ve had in years. The owner and staff were so friendly and helpful. Would go back in a heartbeat!
Great evening, great food and enjoying the ocean breeze.
Great cocktails. Wife had trio of fish, which was excellent. I had teriyaki flank or skirt steak marinaded overnight. Great flavor. Unfortunately when you marinate meat too long in pineapple juices, the enzymes breaks down the meat fibers and the meat becomes mushy, which it was. Great atmosphere and service, I would come here again.
Fun evening to celebrate birthday with family while on vacation. Great service in s nice setting in Kona
One dish of Ahi/ vegetables was cool not warm and not prepared properly. Otherwise food was very good.
Located on Ali’i Drive, the ambiance and service are great. During the day, a great view of the ocean and cool breeze make this spot worth considering. One person in the part got the ultimate seafood pasta. At $36, I expected more than one scallop, though the lobster meat still in shell was a nice touch. The white cream sauce was also very light. Myself and one other person in the group both got the mahi mahi (crusted with macadamia nuts) and it was rather bland.
Fish Hopper is a long established Kona restaurant. The views, weather, service, food are top notch and well define the overall Kona experience.
Seafood was on point, cocktails were great and desert was awesome. Cheesecake 😍
We had a fabulous lunch with a lovely view of water! Everything was delicious from the cocktail to dinners. Seafood nacho plate and fish tacos. The chowder was excellent! We are going back tomorrow for dinner. Our waitress and hostess were very nice. Very happy !
Food was “ok”, but nothing very memorable. Fish was over cooked and a little dry. Appetizers were actually the best part of the meal. Initial service and order taking was good, but then food service was slow, and I didn’t bring my drink until I reminded them 10 mins later I still didn’t have my drink. Then another long wait after appetizers to main course. We weren’t in a hurry, but the restaurant was not busy, maybe 6 tables occupied. Maybe they need more kitchen staff. Front of house staff were all super nice and very friendly.
Restaurant was accomadating getting us seated prior to our later reservation. Service was quick and prices are reasonable. Waitress was honest in her recommendations from menu. We were seated with a sea view but request to be seated near the front and you’ll have an amazing view.
Great dinner with visiting friends. We are consistently impressed with Joel, the wait staff and the overall fun experience the Fish Hopper is. Good food, good service, great setting and our go to place in Kona.
ALWAYS AMAZING FOOD. KIM WAS GREAT!
LOVE SAND DABS so perfect AND Kama'aina menu. Sesame fish onolishious too!
Undverständlich für ein normales Restaurant, wo alle andern bei 15% Trinkgeld vorschlagen, bei FishHopper mit 20% Trinkgeld beginnen. Ein Grund nie wieder dort Einkehren!
One of my favorites in Kona. Food always good along with the service.
always a very good dinner enjoyed the food service and atmosphere very much
Simply outstanding seafood. We are here three times during our stay.
Great location, great food, really enjoyed the ocean view.
Amazing dinner, creative local fish entree, perfect waterfront view and excellent service
Sorry folks but we were disappointed in the fish hopper. We made a reservation which was good and table was ready. Service was very good. Had a mai tai a disappointment. Had the fish trio with a great presentation OK except the mahi mahi which was tough. Should not need a knife to cut fish. Thought the 100 dollars for the meal was out of line for what we received. I know we were in a high priced area but we can not recommend.
Food was good and service was good. Not great. But good. The view of the ocean across the street is what’s the best
My ono entree was much smaller than the 5-6oz portion it was supposed to be, and was also overcooked. Cocktails were okay, appetizers were fine, but I don’t think the overall experience warrants the fine dining price tag. Manager promptly removed my entree from bill and was apologetic, so it’s clear they care about guest experience. Hopefully it was just an off night.
