Fish Hopper - Kailua-Kona
A landmark (formerly the Ocean View Inn) and a local’s favorite Kona restaurant since 1934, the building housing The Fish Hopper has been beautifully restored to expand upon its spectacular ocean views. We proudly serve seafood from sustainable sources, harvested by methods that do not harm the environment.
Window Table Not Guaranteed.
First off the view is great, right across from the ocean in all of it beauty. The food was very good and can highly recommend dining here. Being Hawaii, Seafood is the focus. WE had Ahi and Ono very, very good and well seasoned to accent the flavor. If you are going to be in Kona or are there now and looking for a place to dine - -Her it is!
Had the steak and lobster. At $47 it was a good deal for Kona. Food was fantastic and service excellent
The food was fantastic and the service was great. Juli was wonderful. She made excellent recommendations and she was right!
Food and service were very good. They were helpful with the gluten free diets.
Best Reataurant in Kailua Kona, It’s a always must return.
I checked off that it was a special occasion, no one asked anything about it. I asked for a window seat. We were seated one row in because they were all taken. The food was average but it seems the prices are higher for the same things. I’m concerned that my go to place is slipping.
Perfect food, perfecte everything, service, ambience, value and overall i shut recommend
Took friends from out of town, and they loved it. Great view, and food.
It was decent but other fish hopper is better food wise
Food is great, service could improve. Asked for seperate check waitress acknowledged my request but combined checks in order to gain a larger gratuity even after the constant waiting for service. Willing to go back but will request another waitress if I see her
Beautiful view but the food was average. My fish and chips were dry
The location can’t be beat. The menu was not too big, but enough to interest several tastes for Amercan-themed food. The best part of our experience was our server, Vickie. She knew the menu and the foods and perhaps was a bit psychic. She picked an entree she thought I’d enjoy and was spot on. Very friendly and interactive, but not overbearing. Definitely the type of server restaurants should strive to have. Rest of wait staff was on cue as well. We never had to ask for refills on water, and they were quick to remove our empty dishes, allowing us to enjoy each other’s company (and more wine) with an uncluttered table. We will certainly be back on our next visit to Kona.
The food was very average, it was all overpriced. The flavor was missing for most dishes. Save your money and try some of the other restaurants in the area.
Great food well maintained restaurant and great service by the sea .. and provide parking as well
Good food and good service. Restaurant is right on the main road in Kona town. There is seating that looks out at the water.
We ended up eating there twice.
My son loved the ribs so we had to go back. Others in our party had fish which they really liked. The Teriyaki Chicken was good.
Our visit was fantastic starting with the server so friendly and helpful with choosing drinks. The meal was fresh and fabulous!
Really nice restaurant with a nice ocean view. Service is great, and food was excellent.
Dated decor but excellent views of the ocean even though it’s across the street. Outstanding Fish N Chips - the Ono cooked with a Kona beer batter was phenomenal. Would make a great takeout option
The Island was awesome, just the right amount to share. The server was attentive and it is a great first night out experience.
You pay for the view. The food was ok but bland and overpriced. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Nice view of the ocean.
Nice location with great view of the bay. Nice ambiance. Food is overpriced for what you get. One of those small portion/artsy presentation places. No salad, no bread and $30-40 a plate. It’s Hawaii, so expensive is normal, but this place is low value for the price you pay.
Loud and hot, the fans seemed to barely affect airflow in the restaurant. The poke nachos were good but expensive and fish was overdone as I have often found it to be on the island. They are trying but falling short, especially at the price they are asking. Not up to Mi’s, it’s neighbor.
Most outstanding fish restaurant on the Big Island. Great Mahi Mahi.
Shrimp cerviche appetizer was good. Main meal did not offer much flavor in the food. Calamari was overbreaded and tasteless. I coconut shrimp was okay not great. Ono was very good. Was hoping for a very flavorful fish dinner since it was across the street from the water.
Extensive menu, great children's menu, excellent drinks. The food is delicious.
I thought that the food was `
Was able to accommodate us on short notice. Had table seating next to open air window. Waitress Kim was awesome. Food and dessert exceptional.
Shrimp Trio and Fish Trio were excellent. A very small portion of vegetables and potatoes accompanied them. The Poke Nachos we're excellent but a small portion. We had room for dessert of Macadamia nut pie and chocolate cake, both very good at $10 each.
My order was New York steak but a ribbed steak was carried and it was very disappointing and unpleasant
Server was exceptional. Menu has a lot of items, and a very busy menu often means that sauces aren’t always made recently. They have the specials plated as you walk in which is a neat idea. Am I asking too much of laid back Kona? Fun ambience
Amazing sea food chowder, Crab cakes and Macadamia nut mahi mahi was great ,
Overall experience was great.
The best seafood restaurant on the Big Island. The MacNut encrusted Mahi Mahi is outstanding.
The food was excellent. Our server was fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable. She gave us excellent advice on activities throughout the island and enlisted help when she needed it with our questions. The specials were to die for! Excellent experience and would recommend for anyone in Kona.
When making this reservation for Father's Day, I did notate that I wanted it to be special for my husband and wanted to sit by the open windows overlooking Kailua Bay. This location holds special significance as it was our grandmother's favorite eatery when it was Oceanview Restaurant for over 50 years.
Our Open Table reservation was for 10:30 am. My name doesn't match my physical ethnic appearance. When they saw me, there was a pause and then we were told we couldn't sit by the window. Instead, we were seated in the rear center row. I noticed that 3 minutes later a table by the window was given to other patrons and another 6 mintues later another table was given to other patrons. We were not asked if we wanted to wait for a window table.
The waitstaff took over 20 minutes to return to take our orders. It was then another 40 minutes to get our food. At no point were we asked if we wanted drink refills (we order mimosas and our son ordered juice). My corned beef hash and eggs entree was made incorrectly with sunny side up eggs. I waited a bit for our waitress to return the dish. All they did was scramble in the eggs into the corned beef hash and then threw new eggs on top. I found the runny yolks still in my hash and now the hash was no longer hash but now burnt.
The final insult during this experience was when we witnessed all the different waitstaff delivering small gift boxes to all the fathers at all the other tables around us. They did not offer one to my husband, even though I made it clear that it was a Father's Day brunch and we were with our 12 year old son.
We were really disappointed since we had such a great food and service experience at the Fish Hopper in Monterey over the President's Day weekend in February. While this was our grandmother's favorite eating spot in Kailua-Kona, the change in restaurant ownership no longer makes us feel welcome.
Great dinner at Fish Hopper for our anniversary. Service was great, food was flavorful and connected well with the island theme. Make sure to ask which fish is fresh from the island. Dessert tray even looked great, too bad we were full. Worth the price and the ambiance!
Only issue is the traffic right on the street can distract from your view of the bay.
The poke nachos are a MUST! I think they’re the best thing I’ve ever eaten, and I love to eat! Ate there two days in a row it was so good!
YUMMY! Poke Nachos are a must! I could have eaten three as my dinner!
Everyone was very helpful and energetic. The food came at the right time and happy hour deals were superb
Beautiful Ocean Marina views with excellent food and generous portions. I’d prefer more seafood in the Ultimate seafood pasta but it was sooooo good. Staff was awesome.
