Christopher Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton—the women behind Canal House Station—are cooks, writers, and artists. In 2007 they founded Canal House, which includes a publishing venture and a culinary, photography, and design studio. Their cookbook "Canal House Cooks Every Day" received a James Beard Award in 2012. In 2019, Christopher and Melissa opened Canal House Station, a hidden gem tucked into an elegantly restored 1870s train station on the banks of the Delaware River in Milford, NJ. Their idiosyncratic, modern American cuisine is inspired by local ingredients that are ripe and in season in Hunterdon and Bucks County. They are two women, cooking together, and sharing their love of gathering people around the table to eat good food. They have been nominated twice for a James Beard Foundation “Best Chef: Mid Atlantic” award.Canal House Station offers "Sunday Dinner" every Sunday. It is available for Private & Corporate Events, and Celebratory Gatherings throughout the year.

A charming, bustling room in the otherwise closed Frenchtown Inn, Finnbar appeared to this visitor to be a special place for locals, who packed the bar and the dining room on a Monday night. The menu is not extensive, with about four items in every category. Choosing was difficult, but we enjoyed each of our choices. We started at the bar with two varieties of gin and tonic (one each) along with a bowl of spiced peanuts. Once in the dining room, we started with glasses of champagne, then we each had a salad, one of "little gems," the other cucumber and zucchini. For mains, a pork shoulder for one, with a nice Pinot noir, and a mushroom ragu with fennel on the side for the other, with a French blend called, with a nod to French poetry, La soif du mal. Dessert was a shared Honeymoon almond cake. A fine time was had by both of us. Despite the busy room, the service was attentive but not hurried.

Canal House Station is a surprise. A surprise to find it in Milford. A surprise to find such thoughtful cuisine in a renovated railroad station. Perfect service. A Sunday dinner menu that's deceptively filling. It's prix fixe, and you don't see the menu till the day or week before, but even our fried chicken night was outstanding, including a superb gazpacho with tinges of cumin in the aftertaste and a starter of deviled eggs with smoked salmon. This is not simply a local treasure. This is a place you come to from wherever you are, in our case 60 miles to the south. We'll be back!
