The first evidence of an inn at the site dates back to 1642 but the surrounding area of Seasalter was entered in the Domesday Book as belonging to the kitchens of Canterbury Cathedral. Even then it was an area of food production, farmed by the monks, supplying produce for the influx of religious tourists after the murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170.We took over The Sportsman in November 1999 with the intention of serving good food in relaxed and informal surroundings. We have held a Michelin star since 2008.Following the monks’ example we let the area around the pub dictate what we cook. Behind us, the Thames Estuary, leading out to the North Sea, provides oysters and fish, and in front, marshland, woods and fertile soils give us meat, vegetables and game. We also grow some ingredients ourselves. A small kitchen garden and now polytunnels, mean we can cook with fruit and vegetables that benefit from being picked only moments before use.

    Exceptional food served in such a wonderful setting, right on the beach. The outlook was relaxing and we felt like we were abroad. I had the smoked mackerel pate which was smooth and perfectly seasoned. My main course was the seafood linguine which was full of large prawns, clams and mussels in a delicate white wine and garlic sauce. Our waitress, Emma was great. Friendly and efficient, but left us enjoy our food with no rush. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

    A superb location for a nice Sunday lunch. Friendly staff and good value Sunday roast. Flexible hours as they stay open until 1730hrs. Would recommend.

    Firstly we want to say a massive “Thank You” to Meg! She was amazing last night, probably because me of the best servers we have had since forever! All the staff were great, but a massive thank you to Meg for making the birthday meal special. The atmosphere, and the whole vibe was amazing!!! The food…… AMAZING!!!!! This restaurant will not disappoint!! Our rating for the meal was 10/10 Cannot wait to see you all again.
